Don't even think about staying in a hotel - Jharna (Ishwari's mother who actually hosts the apartment) was the embodiment of everything wonderful Air BnB provides. She has travelled around the world, and previously owned an art gallery in Paris. She speaks multiple languages fluently, and at one point was talking to her neighbor in Bengali, translating back to me, and then talked on the phone in French. Her husband, Deben Bhattacharya, was a famous writer and ethnomusicologist who documented and recorded local music in more than two dozen countries. Just look up his Wikipedia page. The apartment was impeccably clean, and the room looks exactly like the pictures. Don't pass up the dinners offered by Jharna and her cook — for 250 rupees you will be quite pleased (breakfast is free). This was my first stop during my first journey to India, and I can't imagine a better option in Kolkata. The city is frenetic and at times overwhelmingly crowded, so you will enjoy the reprieve to her residential neighborhood. That's not to say it's removed from all of the action, and you can grab an uber or walk to the metro very easily. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

This place is awesome! Very clean, comfortable place to return to every night. Lokki the housekeeper cooks great meals everyday if you want. It's in a quiet neighborhood and right across the street from a big lake and park. Ishwari was super nice and communicative in making sure that I had everything I needed during my stay. Highly recommended!

Our experience was fantastic. Ishwari is very prompt, detailed and caring in her responsiveness. I stayed with my fiancé immediately before an elaborate wedding with family, and it was a calm and restful place to recover. The location was ideal for us, and in a highly walkable area. The two workers who staff the guestroom are extremely kind and generous. The food is delicious, and everything is affordable, clean, and peaceful. I was able to help my parents book this guestroom for a later stay, and they enjoyed it thoroughly. Daily (small loads) laundry is included, which adds to the convenience of the whole arrangement.

The host was incredibly helpful and welcoming. When there was a slight issue regarding communication with the caretakers, the host resolved the issue to my satisfaction immediately. I strongly recommend Ishwari as host of the AIrBnB apartment and will certainly return on my next visit.

Wow, I loved the actual apartment; the artwork, books and cool foreign couple on their long-term stay. Additionally, the caretakers and their awesome cooking, were as helpful as possible, though much was lost in translation. Then there's the very good location, (Sarat Bose Rd leads right into Park Street, as you walk those 3-5 klms, you pass some great coffee shops, Hookah/Sports Bars, and night spots, street markets, there's also a small park right across the street and Rash Behari Age., Hazra, Gariahat Roads. I highly recommend wandering the streets BETWEEN these big ones, like Lake Road (Vivekanada Park) for some great coffee shops and small gems, like Esctasea seafood restaurant and others sprinkled into the mix. The one drawback was that no one actually spoke English within the house.

Soulful city, sinful food! This was my first Airbnb in India and Ishwari made it pleasantly memorable. The place was just as described in the listing, even better. The bathroom was exceptionally clean. Ishwari is a great host and took care of all my needs including midnight arrival. She's just a phone call or a text away. Laxmi(night time) and Dibakar( daytime) caretakers were pleasantly helpful and more than willing to take care of the smallest of the needs including delicious breakfast every morning. I would highly recommend this place for any single ladies or traveling with their families considering the posh urban location the most. With accessible cab services like Ola/uber navigating through the city was a pleasant experience however, I would go with the reliable and trusted car service recommended by Ishwari. Ishwari, you are a beautiful and humble person inside out and can't thank you enough. I look forward to staying in your Paris home soon sharing good conversation over a cup of coffee with your mother Jharna Bose. Thank you for your kind hospitality.

This was the perfect place to stay in Kolkata. Unfortunately I was sick my whole trip, but Jharna did everything possible to make me feel more comfortable. She even had her doctor come to the apartment for me. The room was very clean and big. The wifi was very strong. The neighborhood was safe, and I loved the nearby lake. I can't thank Ishwari and Jharna enough for a wonderful stay.

This flat belongs to my mother, Jharna Bose-Bhattacharya. She shuttles between Paris and Calcutta.
Jharna has a doctorate from the Sorbonne, Paris where she has lived most of her life. Avid art collector, the house is full of paintings and artifacts. She is retired but is still actively producing world music from her late husband, Deben Bhattacharya’s collection. Being fluent in French, she also translates literature. She has traveled a lot with my father, an ethnomusicologist who did field recording of folk and traditional music all around the world.
I live in Bombay and visit Kolkata periodically. I’m an actor, translator and an art therapist. Since my mother is not internet savvy, I am the point of contact.
I love reading, painting, traveling, and most definitely good food and good conversations!
