Interaction with Guests
Jharna spends her summer in Paris and the rest of the time in Kolkata. She is always happy to chat and share stories about Kolkata whenever she is here.
The house is located on Southern avenue (also known as Dr Meghnad Saha Sarani) in south Kolkata between Lake Kalibari (where the goddess Kali is worshipped), the Birla Academy (where you may enjoy an exhibition) and Vivekananda Park where south Calcutta meets to enjoy street food in the evenings (if you feel adventurous enough, you could also have some). The Dhakuria lakes are at a 5 min walk and are beautiful for a little stroll. The avenue can be noisy during the day but the room is quiet being at the rear of the apartment.
You will find many confectioneries, coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance of the house. The Airport is an hour away. It takes about 45 minutes to reach Howrah Station and a little less for Sealdah Station, depending on traffic/mode of transport. The Metro station is Kalighat and is a 10 min walk. This is my second time that I stayed with Mrs. Jharna. I have nothing much to say but just only 'Perfect stay'. Warm welcome and bengali hospitality are always there. Mrs. Jharna is truly professional host. I am grateful for all her kindness and make my stay as one of the best memory that I've ever had.
I do recommend this place to everyone if you are looking for home away from home.
This is a wonderful place to stay while in Kolkata! Jharna was so kind and lovely. We had many wonderful conversations. The private room is very cozy as well and the food is delicious. In addition, the neighborhood is very safe. An easy walk to the metro and beautiful to walk around. It was so nice to explore during the day and come back at night to somewhere that felt like home. It truly enhanced our experience being in Kolkata.
Jharna (Ishwari's Mom) is such a wonderful host. Place itself is as beautiful and cosy as it can get. Location is super convenient, particularly if you have work in south Kolkata. I am definitely going to stay here next time as well.
It was indeed a wonderful experience we had at the homestay. The moment one step into the home, one gets vintage feel of Kolkata which we actually wanted to experience .All the directions to reach the place were very helpful and it was very easy to locate on map as well. We reached there pretty late in the night. All our tiredness vanished the moment we stepped into the place. The place had all the vintage vibes we hoped for and we really loved it . We were introduced to royal vinatge Kolkata setting. Our host was gracious and charming . We had a wonderful memorable conversation with the host on various Kolkata specific topics. overall it was a very memorable experience and we will surely go back once more.
We had a wonderful stay with Mrs. Bose, just like our own home. The location is good, although a little away from the metro.
We’d lovely evening in the neighbourhood where there was a religious function for which we were also invited, really enjoyed the evening with music & dance.
Mrs Bose was a wonderful host, having interest in any subject. We shared a lot about art, cul;ture, travel, politics and so on. Talked a lot about her daughters as well. By the way, could you please give some information about art therapy?
When there was a problem with the geyser, Mrs Bose gracefully offered her bathroom for us.
The caretaker was very caring and her food delicious.
Overall a fantastic experience, we’ll definitely come again.

How can I even begin to describe how happy I was living at Jharna's comfortable, homey, delightful apartment? I lived here for four full months, and there's truly nothing that I would change about my time here. Jharna is the perfect host - she is warm and generous, incredibly helpful (willing to book a car service), very respectful of privacy and personal space, willing to provide for breakfast whatever is requested, will provide additional meals for a modest fee . . . and my list could go on. The housekeeping is great - the bedroom and bathroom are kept clean and well-maintained. Her housekeeper is great; she has wonderful neighbors; and the building security is great, as well (I ALWAYS felt completely safe). And she provides all the bottled water you could ever want to drink, and all the cooking/food washing is done with bottled water, as well (which is important for Westerners).
The location is wonderful - a park and lakes right across the street, lots of great restaurants and cafes within walking distance (be sure to try Maison des Delices and Mrs. Magpie, Go Lebanese, Krystal Chopstick, Azad Hind . . . and again, my list could go on!!), and on a busy enough street that you can always catch a taxi. For Kolkata, it's a fairly quiet, peaceful area - not too much street noise.
It's not as close to the Metro stop as one might like - it's a good 20-minute walk which doesn't make it super convenient. But again, taxis are easy to catch, or you can hire a car service (for quite a reasonable fee) which Jharna is always willing to call to reserve for you.
Jharna is fluent in French, English, and Bengali, and she has spent a significant amount of time in the West, so she's aware of how Westerners tend to like their space and privacy. She was so respectful of both. She was happy to chat and provide suggestions for things to do/places to go (and you're welcome to hang out in the living/dining area), but if you're in your room, she'll never bother/interrupt you.
Also, the internet/wifi speed is awesome!
A lovely and cosy home in a quiet part of South Kolkata and at the same time, very convenient to travel to different parts of the city. The room was very clean and wifi was good. Overall, it was a very comfortable stay.

About the Host, Ishwari
This flat belongs to my mother, Jharna Bose-Bhattacharya. She shuttles between Paris and Calcutta.
Jharna has a doctorate from the Sorbonne, Paris where she has lived most of her life. Avid art collector, the house is full of paintings and artifacts. She is retired but is still actively producing world music from her late husband, Deben Bhattacharya’s collection. Being fluent in French, she also translates literature. She has traveled a lot with my father, an ethnomusicologist who did field recording of folk and traditional music all around the world.
I live in Bombay and visit Kolkata periodically. I’m an actor, translator and an art therapist. Since my mother is not internet savvy, I am the point of contact.
I love reading, painting, traveling, and most definitely good food and good conversations!
