This is an experience to be in Vidigal, from my point of view better than leblon or ipanema...you have a wondefull comunity ready to show you all the secret if you are open minded. Do not hesitate to drink a beer with carlos in the bar next to the house and speaking with everybody, this is like a village.
There is wonderfull party at the top of vidigal. Sonia is a "personage", she will provide you all the necessary. There is 5 dogs in the house so do not be fear....this paradise has a cost...
Sonia was a delight. She really cares about her guests and made herself quite accessible throughout my whole planning process. And when I arrived the room was ready and clean. The views of the Atlantic Ocean and of Rio in the distance are stunning. Sonia is a very interesting person herself with a rich personal history that is fascinating. Her home, designed by her 30 years ago, is quite artistic and creative in its layouts and interior design. It's a one-of-a-kind place. Especially memorable was the pasta dinner we had together on her terrace as the sun was setting. Sonia was all about hosting and ensuring I had a wonderful guest experience.
Visitors should know that the place is located in a favela neighborhood so you need to be the type that is comfortable with this. I am and was able to enjoy connecting with long time residents of all ages as well as young westerners, many of them artists, who now call this home. The neighborhood has undergone many positive changes over the past five years -- it's a fascinating and culturally rich place to stay at.
Parabéns Sonia por voce casa tão maravilhosa e por voce hospitalidade!
Staying with Sonia was without a doubt the best decision we made when planning our trip to Rio. She went out of her way to help us figure out the area and plan our day trips throughout the city. My girlfriend and I stayed with her for ten days and during that time she really made us feel comfortable and at home!
The view from the balcony is amazing and she is very reasonably priced. It's a great value. My favorite part was that she isn't right on Copacabana beach which meant that you were living in a Brazilian neighborhood and really got a first hand look at Brazilian culture that most tourists don't get to experience.
If I ever return to Rio I will without a doubt stay with Sonia again. She, her dogs, and her maid Maria are all delightful and I would recommend staying with her to anyone who is at all adventurous and looking for accommodation.
Ms. Sonia is a kind host and has friendly dogs. As you can see from the photos the scenery from her balcony is priceless. However, the location of her house, the neighborhood and other factors make it almost impossible to enjoy your stay at Sonia’s. Here is the list of reasons why I do not recommend this place: 1-The house is located on the top of a steep long twisted hill. It is too tiring to climb it up. Cabs refuse to go there as the roads are narrow and curvy. Of course no local transportation pass nearby so the only option is to take a motor-taxi which means you need to sit on unsafe motor behind a careless driver, hold him tight in order not to fall and close your eyes! 2-The neighborhood is rather poor and creepy. It is totally unpleasant to walk there but unfortunately there is no other way out. 3-Too noisy. Her neighbors like to listen to loud music till late hours. On the weekend they kept on till the morning! 4- Because the house is surrounded with beautiful trees and plans, all kind of bugs and worms like to share the room as well. 5-Her dogs are not well trained. They are cute and friendly nevertheless, they poop and pee almost anywhere. The first day we sat on the balcony to enjoy the view 3 dogs pooped and peed right in front of us next to the small pool. The same thing happened the 2nd and 3rd day. There is a cleaning lady that comes in the morning and cleans after them, however when she did not come on the weekend, it was too smelly. One day we came back at night to find poop right in front of our room step door and the odor was horrible. 6-The Wi-Fi signal is weak; you have to go out and stay in the doorway to log on. 7-No close by market to get your essentials. I really don’t like to leave a bad review and cause bad reputation for anybody but I was too annoyed to stay in this place during my vacation and hate this to happen to someone else. It was too tiring and rather unappealing to go back to this room so we always felt obliged to leave the place early in the morning and come back late to avoid bad smells, bugs, gloomy neighborhood and ride motor-taxi again. Ask any Brazilian about Vidigal (the name of area) and he/she would definitely advise you to stay away! To be fair, I also have to mention the few positive points and nice incidents: 1-I’m not a pet person, I do not like dogs to come near me (sniff me) so Ms. Sonia tried her best to keep her dogs away when we got out of the room and came back. 2-When we first arrived Ms. Sonia offered us a complimentary black tea. 3- The fridge was loaded with refreshing drinks. 4-One day we...
A friend and I stayed with Sonia for Carnival. Ive traveled to a few countries in the last few years through AirBNB and this time, by far has been the best stay yet. Sonia is a very caring, funny and lovely lady. Her home is breathtaking beautiful, the view is an amazing and a complete vacation must. I will definitely come back soon and stay with Sonia again.
I love Sonia. She is the warmest, sweetest woman. I felt at home with her from the first second. Even though we hardly spoke any portugese, and she only speaks a bit of english, the our conversations went surprisingly smooth.
As for the room, it was perfect. Especially the waking up and seeing the sunrise over the ocean from in the bed. This kind of view is worth a fortune. Having your own terrace and pool (with the same superb view) was terrific.
We had been looking for a place to stay in Ipanema but this location turned out to be just as good, or even better. The atmosphere from the (safe) favela is exotic, the quietness of the place wonderful. Strongly recommended.
