  • Paid for 3 nights, stayed for one. If this was the first place we stayed in China, perhaps I wouldn't be so harsh. But we'd just spent three weeks in China and we stayed in a variety of hotels and hostels for half the cost of this one. Definitely overpriced - perhaps we were supposed to bargain? Positive features: yes, there's a courtyard. The bathroom is small, but clean and modern. The bed was comfortable and the bedding was clean. The staff was very nice, knowledgeable about the area, and provided great advice on public transit. Negatives: No closet, no storage except a small bedside cabinet that was filthy, a small table (also dirty), no chair. Some hooks on the back of the door. This so-called "deluxe" room was the smallest I'd ever stayed in. The bed was pushed flush against the corner so the inside person had to climb over (or wake up) the other person to get out of bed. No place to sit except the bed or the toilet. The small rug was so dirty that I gave up trying to shake it out, rolled it up and stuffed it under the bed. The floors appeared to be cleaner than the table top. There was a kettle, also covered with a layer of dust, but no cups. Not even a glass in the bathroom. I went into the office, and asked for a cloth or towel to clean up the dust - which they gave me, without offering to help or even to see what the problem was.

Living in the hutong is definitely authentic, but not for everyone. The directions - "turn right at the public toilet" - should have been a clue, but we didn't get the directions until after we made the reservation. Suffice it to say that indoor plumbing is not typical in this neighborhood.

Reportedly you can get a taxi if you're going to the airport; otherwise, they won't come into the hutong because of the narrow streets. Public transit is pretty convenient; about a 5-10 minute walk to the main street and 15 minutes to the subway.

  • Daniel and his staff we're super awesome hosts. The room itself was wonderful and warm in the winter. The hutong has so much character and just all together lovely. I would recommend this place to everyone. They also have a cute dog named Obama.

  • Good value Hutong experience in Beijing. Traditional courtyard house hidden in a lane but close to key city attractions. Daniel and the team are welcoming and offer breakfast in a cozy communal space and provide guidance on getting around the city.

A few improvements - the bathroom could have been a little cleaner and the drainage left a slight odour. It is an old style house so this may be hard to avoid. Would also be good to have some larger signage outside to guide first time visitors.

  • This is a very authentic experience in a hutong. The staff were friendly and helpful. It may be a little difficult to find the hutong at night, but the directions were really clear and helpful and I personally had no issues locating the listing. The room was clean and comfortable, although a little bit chilly.

  • Loved staying at Daniels listing! I came to Beijing for a couple days on my own and was welcomed by the incredibly lovely staff at Fly By Knight Courtyard. Breakfast in the mornings were always delicious. The room is as pictured - clean, warm and simple. All that you need. Located a bit hidden in one of Beijing's Hutongs - staying here really gave me an authentic taste for being a local in Beijing. In combination with the friendly staff, clean accommodations and extra perks like kung fu lessons by Daniel himself, makes this spot a must stay when you need a comfortable and familiar place the stay. Thanks again and looking forward to coming back !!

  • Very comfortable beds in a lovely old chinese house in the center of Beijing, with a yard and a common room. The staff members are very welcoming and they speak english pretty well.
A place i would definitely recommend to anyone who is traveling to beijing!

  • if you are looking for a friendly hostel centrally located in the sprawling city of beijing then fly by knight might be the place for you.

with very helpful staff - thanks jasmine, jewel and yem: you made my stay much more enjoyable - who you will need if like me you have no mandarin, fly by knight is friendly and comfortable but it has it's drawbacks: it isn't cheap (you could get a 3-4 star hotel room, but without the character); it's a bit of a walk to transit and they haven't got a system with taxis to call one for you; it's a bit knocked around the edges and breakfast was pretty ordinary (I stayed in plenty of plush but soulless places for $70 in shanghai and nanjing which were significantly better value).

for friendly staff and a chance to meet fellow travellers fly by night hits the mark. as a hotel commensurate to its price I'm not sure if it does. the hunting it is in isn't too pleasing to the eye either.

but the girls deserve full praise for their efforts and English in a city where not much is spoken. thanks, sorry if my review is a bit harsh but it honestly reflects my experience

  • Interesting location but taxi drivers can have trouble finding it. I stayed there because I didn't want to stay in a faceless hotel room and in that respect it fitted the bill. The staff are lovely, speak good english and really helpful. My only gripe is that the rooms weren't cleaned at all during the three days I was there. Given that its the same price as a hotel, I felt this should have been done.

About
My name is Daniel, and I've traveled a lot. I traveled because I was looking for something. I am a Martial artist who taught for many years, but I know there's more things out there. I've settled in Beijing and decided to live in a courtyard, a nice, quiet, and downtown city courtyard, so I founded Fly by Knight Courtyard. Nothing matters to me more than details, quality, and communication. We have extremely high standards for our mattresses and beddings, spotless cleaning job, and we love to listen to travelers' stories.
