About this listing
Ivy Cottage started life as an old smithy and is full of character with exposed beams a particular feature. The cottage is tastefully decorated and has been finished to a very high standard.
Situated in the idyllic Ullswater valley, this beautiful cottage sleeps 2-6 people and has been renovated to a very high standard. It is ideal for families or couples and can be let in conjunction with Watermillock Cottage (next door, sleeps 9) for extended families.
The location of Ivy Cottage, combined with its high standards and range of facilities, make this one of the best high quality cottages in the north lakes. The cottage dates from the sixteenth century and includes original beams, a mezzanine level bedroom, bright wooden flooring, bathroom and shower room, and a lovely garden.
The cottage is virtually carbon neutral using state of the art solar thermal and biomass for hot water and central heating. Electricity is supplied through hydro and PV panels. Water treatment uses reed bed technology.
The site itself offers a fantastic child and dog friendly ‘olde worlde’ bar providing local ales and a great atmosphere, as well as an indoor and outdoor children’s adventure playground, local shop, and unlimited hot water and central heating through our onsite biomass boiler. A large, enclosed garden houses a two storey play house and sunken trampoline. (The garden is shared with Watermillock Cottage.)

We had a wonderful stay at the Ivy Cottage, catching up with friends and their children in our favorite part of the the Lake District. There were 8 of us staying and the property had ample room to accommodate us comfortably - with a couple of extra airbeds and bedding kindly provided. The property has a lovely shared garden and trampoline which got much use during our stay. Thoroughly recommended.
Good house and beautiful scenery. Lovely people in the shop.
We really enjoyed our stay at Ivy Cottage - the staff were very friendly and helpful, the local area is lovely and the cottage is as described and shown in the pictures. Thank you.
We loved Ivy Cottage. It is well fitted out, charming and so easy to live in. The beds are very comfortable and the sitting room large and welcoming. We had a drink in the bar which is nice to have so close by. The area around The Quiet is so beautiful and the walks lovely. The walk to Aira Force is so worth it but you need good walking boots and a good 4 hours. Also we ended up going across the top of Gowbarrow Fell on the way back rather than round it because we took a wrong gate and by the time we realised it we were committed to the hike up. But the views made it absolutely worth the extra effort. Can't wait to go back.
We stayed during the Easter long weekend and it was a lovely though busy time to visit the Lake District. Very friendly staff at The Quiet and made us feel very welcome. Ivy Cottage is lovely and has a roomy living room. The staff were very helpful and easy going. Ivy Cottage was perfect for us and our friends. Having a little shop at The Quiet holiday site was also handy. We never made it to the bar but knowing it was there was reassuring - next time, we'll make it to the bar.
Finding The Quiet was slightly challenging so don't rely on Google Maps as mobile reception was hit and miss. Also we didn't know you have to bring your own bath towels. However, we explained this at reception/shop and they kindly lent us towels for our stay.
My partner, 3 friends and I stayed for 4 nights at the Ivy Cottage and we had a great time! The cottage was even more cosy and stylish than it looked on the photos, the beds were very comfortable and warm, the back garden was lovely and the kitchen well-equipped. We found it slightly cold when we arrived (the weather being about 10 degrees outside) but we asked for them to turn the thermostat up and then it felt adequately warm. I loved the environment in the Quiet bar so special that it inspired me to propose to my partner there!
We also found it a convenient spot for visiting various places around, it is only 5min drive from Ullswater which we found to be the best lake for a long hike and more charming and less busy than Windermere, as well as trips to the picturesque towns of Ambleside and Keswick as well as the nearby great pub of the Queen's Head In in Tirril (highly recommended for food).
I would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone looking for a quiet, charming and convenient spot in the north side of the Lake District.
Spent 3 nights at Ivy Cottage in a snowy and wintry January.
The listing description was accurate. The cottage is very spacious and ideal for families. It is well equipped with DVDs and books for people of all ages, as well as toys for younger children.
It is very quiet and peaceful, and I would definitely stay again
