The space

Situated in the idyllic Ullswater valley, this beautiful cottage sleeps 2-6 people and has been renovated to a very high standard. It is ideal for families or couples and can be let in conjunction with Watermillock Cottage (next door, sleeps 9) for extended families.

The location of Ivy Cottage, combined with its high standards and range of facilities, make this one of the best high quality cottages in the north lakes. The cottage dates from the sixteenth century and includes original beams, a mezzanine level bedroom, bright wooden flooring, bathroom and shower room, and a lovely garden.

The cottage is virtually carbon neutral using state of the art solar thermal and biomass for hot water and central heating. Electricity is supplied through hydro and PV panels. Water treatment uses reed bed technology.

Guest access

The site itself offers a fantastic child and dog friendly ‘olde worlde’ bar providing local ales and a great atmosphere, as well as an indoor and outdoor children’s adventure playground, local shop, and unlimited hot water and central heating through our onsite biomass boiler. A large, enclosed garden houses a two storey play house and sunken trampoline. (The garden is shared with Watermillock Cottage.)

Interaction with guests

We can offer as much or as little help as you require. We are always available to offer help and advice if needed.

The neighborhood

Ullswater is set in one of the most idyllic valleys in England. There are plenty of scenic walks direct from the cottage door, and local attractions such as the Ullswater steamers, Aira Force waterfalls, Dalemain House, and many more.

Getting around

Penrith station is just 8 miles away; a bus comes to within 1.5 miles of the cottage. If you are travelling by public transport, we are happy to pick you up from the bus/train stop.

Other things to note

The large garden is shared with a second holiday cottage. The cottage is adjacent to our holiday park called The Quiet Site where we have a small shop, and also a lovely cosy bar which is open in the evenings.

We are happy to let Friday for 7 nights or Friday for 3 nights and Monday for 4 nights; we will consider requests for other times.

Ivy Cottage can be let with Watermillock Cottage as a single property sleeping up to 15.

An all round amazing holiday. We were instantly greeted by the lovely smiley Clare and shown around the cottage even though we were early. Location of this cottage (and the site) is perfect for the majority of the lakes. The beds are super comfy and there is more than enough room for 6 people. Everything was really clean and easy to find. The shower in the downstairs bathroom was very powerful and very nice. The garden (even though shared) is big. The homemade maps for the walks are brilliant and got us both there and back on all occasions. The Quiet Bar is a 5 second walk away and absolutely gorgeous!! We tried "The Saucy Sausage" for our tea one night on the site and can also highly recommend this van. Amazing holiday, amazing place, amazing cottage. I didn't want to come home and we are already planning our trip for next year :)

Lovely location, easy to find and the cottage itself is lovely/quirky and bigger than expected. Plenty of room for a a large family and accommodated extra visitors easily. Great to have sheets, towels, etc all provided for - that along with the good facilities, and local shop, made it a very relaxed/low-stress break :) Also has a great garden space with play-house/trampoline, along with plenty of toys, books, DVDs to keep the kids entertained.

The staff on the site were very welcoming. The actuality of the cottage exactly matched the description; it was a charming old-world cottage and we were very impressed. We were out of season and the site was very quiet but sufficient amenities were available on-site so as to make it comfortable. The whole area is of course of outstanding natural beauty and we found it very central to make easily day trips to any part of the lakes. We even appreciated the snow!

We stayed at Ivy Cottage over Christmas and it was perfect. The location is amazing, on the hill by the lake, just a short walk down to the waters edge. The cottage itself is much larger inside than it appears from the outside, we had six adults and two rowdy kids staying and there was plenty of space. The cottage is on a site called The Quiet Site which has a shop that is a definite benefit when running out of the essentials, otherwise we'd have had to drive somewhere. The bar at the Quiet Site is nice and cosy. We had a great time and will definitely be back.

The Quiet User ProfileThe Quiet is a superhost.

The Quiet Site is a family run campsite situated in a secluded position amongst the stunning fells that overlook Lake Ullswater.

This is a superbly maintained and very picturesque site, the facilities being housed mainly in old converted farm buildings.

There are many beautiful walks that you can start from right outside the Quiet Site and numerous activities and attractions a very short drive away.

The site is in an ideal position for touring both the North and South Lakes by car.

We are easily accessible from the M6 motorway - Junction 40 and the charming market town of Penrith, both of which are only 7 miles away.

It's not surprising that 80% of our visitors have stayed with us before!
