This peaceful place offers:
Extraordinary views to the mountains in all directions. Secluded tranquility. A guest's quote: "Bucolicly situated quaint farmhouse" and a Lonely Planet quote: "One of the most picturesque valleys in Iceland".

We offer you the three bedrooms with warm duvets and linen: two with king size quality beds (or twin beds) and a small bedroom with queen sized bed; a comfortable living room with great views, Icelandic art and selection of books; and a renovated bathroom with bathtub/shower.
The kitchen is new and super equipped with large dining area, great views and a fire place. This is a place and surroundings full of character, culture and history - to be discovered by our guests. We have let this place out from time to time for many years and exchanged with great pleasure with loads of guests from all over the world. Some come again - and again.

Lots of space for families and friends. Upper floor has one separate bedroom with two queen size beds, bathroom with shower and a large living area with single bunk beds.
You will have the whole apartment on the ground floor, and for a larger group of guests you will enjoy the extra space in the upper floor with a second bathroom and a fourth bedroom plus an additional large sitting area. Washing machine in tool room.
The farmhouse does not have WiFi and cell service is not optimal.

A community thermal pool with panoramic views 15 min drive away, open until late night during summer.
People who come here love the nature, the serene tranquility, the remoteness - its 2 km to the next farm - yet to be close to the highway, the mainroad between the south and the north, and only 30 km from the vibrant Akureyri, doing daytrips to the major attractions of the north: Dettifoss, Mývatn, Húsavík or Dalvík-Siglufjörður-Skagafjörður circle.
Great hiking area at the doorstep, literally. This place comes with a private waterfall(!), and a few of them, and a whole valley of serenity.
Trout fishing in river Hörgá, one of the best in Iceland.
The place has hosted a couple of Icelandic country summer weddings - arranged outdoor/indoor with party tents put up by the terrace/in the romantic birch tree grove next to the house.
You can use the house as a base for exploring North Iceland or just to be able to switch off and relax. You can go hiking and enjoying the untouched nature away from high tech devices, or just sit on the porch and admire the extraordinary views or maybe read about the admired Icelandic poet and naturalist who was born here 200 years ago and made this landscape part of his immortal work, now translated into English.
350 km from Reykjavik city takes you about 4 hours to drive in normal conditions.
25 min drive from Akureyri (supermarkets, shops, reastaurants etc.)
Drive to (in summer):
Goðafoss - 1 hour
Mývatn - 1 1/2 hrs
Húsvík - 1 1/2 hrs
Ásbyrgi - 2 hrs
Dettifoss - 2 hrs+

The farmhouse is merely 500 metres from Road No 1. However, public transport is only available once or twice pr day and we suggest to our guests to have access to a car.
As weather and road conditions in winter is unpredictable (well weather is in summer, too, but that's not dangerous!) our guests must be prepared for winter conditions and in heavy snow you may sometimes need a 4x4 to access the driveway (October-April) and it can even be blocked by snow.
Other Things to Note
The area is a WiFi-free zone: here you are supposed to switch off :) You will have free access to Wi-Fi in Backpackers and Te&Kaffi, Akureyri, and internet at the public library of Akureyri.
Trips: We can arrange to take our guests on special trips where 4x4 is essential; one or two day trips. Also hiking in the neighborhood. Ask us when you book and we can discuss.
Thank you for your interest in our country home and please feel free to contact us if any questions arise.
This is your home away. We ask you to respect the quiet and peaceful space we have created.
Please inform us in time about the estimated time of arrival, and if you arrive late, consider possible other guests in the house.
Please make sure you have a phone on which we can reach you and please provide the estimated time of arrival at least one or two days in advance.
This is our second home and we would like you to treat it with same respect as your own.
Detailed instructions are provided in hard copy in the house. Please read them carefully.
What an amazing stay! A perfectly comfortable home among the pristine, perfect, and in our case snowy landscapes of Öxnadalur. Despite never meeting them in person, Sif and Oli made us feel less like Airbnb guests and more like old friends dropping by to stay in their home. The kitchen was magnificent and we cooked almost every meal at home. The hiking was stunning despite early spring (technically Icelandic summer) snow coverage. We all slept comfortably.
Getting to the house was very easy from Reykjavik and Akureryi is only a short drive. We found it the perfect location to use as a base for day trips in the area, including a drive to lake Mývatn.
I can't recommend this listing enough; we're eagerly anticipating our return. A truly memorable experience.
Sif and Oli are really how hosts at AirBnB should be. Taking care that the guest are satisfied, giving us a perfect explanation how to come to their great place, a beautiful mixture between old farmhouse and modern style weekend house, giving us a informations about what to do and how to in the vicinity.
As that regions in northern Iceland (probably even more in wintertime) is not very crowded the it was very helpful that the house was well prepared and the description where to shop and supply was very detailed.
The house itself is beautiful, the kitchen is modern and brand new and the house has a certain flair the one sees when a lot of personal effort is put in something.
We really recommend both, the house and the host and hope to spent some time again in Holar farm in the future! It was a great time up there in the snowy North!
PROS: We loved this special place with incredibly pleasant owners. It was in the most beautiful location imaginable with gorgeous views, and right off the ring road, but still SO private.
There is a wonderful hike up the hills across the road to an Alpine lake, and it is proximate for day hiking in Myvatn. The hiking information and maps left for us were so helpful.
The beds were comfortable, kitchen well-appointed and we particularly appreciated having a wood burning fireplace and laundry available. Also, having Monopoly to play (even if in Icelandic) made for a couple of very fun nights for our family. There was plenty of space for our family to be together and apart. If we are ever back in Northern Iceland we would stay again.
Be sure to get either the contact information for the local contact or for the key lock box.
CONS: We had a significant snafu upon arrival finding the location locked - this was actually pretty traumatic, required an hour of (useless and expensive) calls to Airbnb and produced some tears since we'd been driving all day and arrived with huge anticipation. It took some fun out of our visit for some reason.
The dishwasher and toaster were broken when we arrived and the upstairs smelled musty. Downstairs was dusty, and the table cloth needed cleaning.
The farm house is simply beautiful- a peaceful, serene setting with dramatic mountain views from every window. We enjoyed a spectacular hike to a mountain lake nearby. The house itself has been wonderfully restored and was spacious and comfortable for our group of six. Sif and Oli were easy to communicate with, and made us feel very welcome and comfortable in their home. We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this very special place.
Really great farmhouse, very nice house with a comfy feel. We were a bit worried about finding the house but the indications given were easy to follow. The house is perfectly situated for daytrips in Akureyri, Mytvan, Dalvik and many other places. The view from the house is amazing and we really appreciated the walk to the private waterfall.

About the Host, Sif + Oli
Hi, we are Sif and Oli, a couple of well travelled professionals.
Yes ;) we absolutely LOVE to travel. We have exchanged homes all over the world for the last decade, and we are not nearly there yet ;) We cherish the philosophy of exchanging homes with people that can teach you something about the world and yourself. We have met most of our guest and try to do so whenever we have the opportunity. Some of our guests have visited multiple times and many of them have become our friends.
We have four grown up kids and our work is in Europe and in Africa. We are nature lovers and we think its important to protect the environment. We do all kinds of outdoor activities, recently mostly sailing.
We will be happy to have you at our very special place in the north of Iceland. We have lived in Iceland, Belgium and Spain but we also travel for work. Now, when kids have left home, we might travel even more, work and pleasure.
