This colorful and clean 1923 house was completely remodeled in 2004. The house is a 2BR/ 2BA with a pillowtop queen in the large master (full private bath) and a new double futon bed (floor level) in an office which converts to a small guest room adjacent to a hallway full bath. The following amenities are included: CACH, WIFI, HDTV, washer/dryer, fully equipped kitchen, street parking, fenced back yard with semi privacy fence/deck/chiminea and front yard with porch and pecan, crepe myrtle, fig, peach and plum trees. Whatever is growing in the organic garden, you are welcome to pick and enjoy!
A little dog named Diego resides here when you're not here so if you are allergic to animal dander, you may want to reconsider.
Coffee, tea and a few breakfast items for your first few days are included in the nightly rate.
The neighborhood is an up and coming area of Austin, ~1 mile from the University of Texas, ~ 1.5 - 2 miles from Austin Convention Center and downtown, ~ 2.5 miles from Ladybird Lake and trails, 15 min from the airport, and a few short blocks from the bus stop. ~ $5-$10 taxi ride, metro rail (MLK station just 5 min walk) or a bus stop a short block away will get you downtown in minutes.

Dwellers are culturally diverse and an eclectic blend of artists, professors, students, city employees, long time elderly, retired, and business professionals. You will see new home construction as well as old homes (some run down) that typify what east Austin has been for many years.
A small women's bike and 5 passenger car may be available for rental as well as airport pickup.

I stayed at Zen-East during SXSW. It is a lovely property with a beautiful backyard and front porch. It is very convenient and a lot of restaurants/bars/coffee spots very close by. Paddy was extremely helpful and always responded back to me very quickly. She kindly provided us with breakfast items and suggestions on local/hill country a. She always gave me some notice if she was coming by and I felt very comfortable staying at her property. I would highly recommend this property to anyone. I feel Paddy genuinely wanted to make us feel comfortable. Considering the house is so central, I thought her rental price was very reasonable. In all, my friends and I had a wonderful time at Zen-East and look forward to returning!
Paddy's place was just as advertised. It was clean and she clearly went all out in trying to make the place comfortable. However, her level of involvement at the place was less than ideal.
Besides a few hour long visits to the house, our party received no less than 21 text messages from Paddy during the stay. She left her dog at the place (which she didn't tell us she was doing), and also texted that she would be coming by in the morning to do laundry, but would try not to disturb if we were asleep. Two early AM doorbell rings later and a woken up boss, does not a happy stay make. My boss was very displeased with me for booking us into this place. She said "Never Again".
Great place, intrusive owner.
John...Gee thanks. For never having met me, you sure seem to have the corner on truth. For the record, several of my texts were responses to Portia wanting info. I texted once to say, go ahead and drink the beer in the fridge, just replace, since one of your friends was ready to drink it without asking if it was included with the stay. I can show you an email where I asked Portia if Diego, my dog, could stay Sat pm and she said "Sure, I love dogs" so this was checked out in advance. I told her, in advance that she could stay past noon if she needed to. I arrived at 9:15 am Sun to do laundry b/c Portia said she was leaving at 10 and I knew that all of you had left and that she was the only one present. She never said it was too early. There are some things I could've said publicly about your group, but I chose to not nit pick as no situation is going to be perfect. For example, someone asked for broccoli for breakfast and didn't even touch it. I gave you all the benefit of the doubt and don't appreciate the skewed and incomplete representation of me and what actually transpired. Amazing what little it takes to make someone unhappy in this world and how easy it is to create stories to feel justified/right. I have never received a bad review, in fact, I've had return guests and 100% positive reviews over the past 6 years. Get your facts straight...how unfortunate that none of you could share this with me directly if you were so bothered. Perhaps you will share and discuss this with your boss and see if her memory can be jogged as to what actually happened and do what's right, say what actually happened...In any case, what comes around goes around.
We stayed here for the F1 race weekend and it was perfect. Paddy was a great host and we enjoyed speaking with her. The house has everything you need and she will help with great places to eat. We also appreciated the breakfast items she left! I would recommend this place to anyone! It was great location, close to downtown. Be advised that getting a cab to pick you up at night is very hard! If you are planning on drinking take your car, leave it and have a cab drive you home. We would then take another car to pick up in the morning on the way to the track. Just a suggestion, as its not advisable to drink and drive! Thanks to Paddy again and we hope to see you next year!
a really welcoming place to stay, lovely back yard, very relaxing space to be in - amazing little grocer (wet whistle) and sandwich shop (austin daily press) within a few blocks walk through the lovely neighborhood.
utilitarian but very useful corner store literally a block away.
excellent communication and a very easy time coordinating.
I arrived late in the evening so did not meet Paddy, but her home was lovely and clean and welcoming. She checked in with my friend and I most days to make sure that we had no questions or needed anything. All in all, a very smooth, stress-free experience in Austin!
We had a great stay at Zen East for South By Southwest! Paddy was extremely accommodating and we found the place to be exotic and homely. It was easy to settle right in and experience Austin, and everything was a short taxi or bus ride away. She had everything we needed for our stay, and we loved the zen vibe of the backyard garden.
We had a great time in Austin staying at Paddy's house. The house is much larger than it looks on the photos, very clean and the moment you step in you feel like home. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again next time I'm back in Austin.

I am a long time resident of Austin. I earned a few degrees at UT many years ago. Some of my interests include gardening, meditation, film and film making, swing dance, biking, hiking and finding ways to leave a smaller footprint on the planet. I have a small dog, Diego, who is sweet, energetic and very friendly. If you don't care for dogs close up, this may not be the best option for you, UNLESS you are renting the entire house.
During the week, the two front rooms of the house are treatment rooms and I offer Oriental Medicine: acupuncture, herbs, nutrition and Asian bodywork therapy. One room is easily converted into a bedroom with a new double futon.
If you're interested in quality professional massage, acupuncture & or herbal therapy, it may be possible to arrange this "in house" with a little advance notice.
Austin offers many fun and unique things to do year round. Some events, like ACL, Formula One and SXSW, leave many folks with few places to stay as hotels tend to book up. You might prefer staying in a quiet, home environment and save a little money cooking some of your meals with more space, privacy and lounging space.
