About This Listing
Our stone cottage is a holiday haven. Available year round, it's just right for two with a loft bedroom, spacious open-plan kitchen/dining/living area and wood stove. The sunroom looks to Dunmanus Bay, its headlands and the sunset.
The cottage at Fuchsia Lane is a quiet home from home away from traffic, commerce and pedestrians, in what used to be a farmyard but is now a secluded courtyard. The main living area and sunroom are separated from storage, bathroom and upstairs bedroom. Our international visitors report that they sleep unaccustomed long nights and enjoy buying local produce to cook here, in their own kitchen.
The cottage has its own private garden and patio.
Interaction with Guests
We aim to give our guests maximum privacy at the same time as being on hand if help is needed. We meet our guests on arrival, show them around and make sure their needs are met, and then we stay out of their way until they need us - at which point we are just across the courtyard. Although we are nearby, the main house and cottage are essentially separated by the courtyard and look in opposite directions to their own private gardens.
The cottage is 4 miles/6.5 km west of Schull, close to sandy beaches and with the extraordinary walks of Barleycove, Mizen Head, Sheeps Head and Three Castles Head in comfortable reach. It's also a great base from which to motor to the Beara peninsula and the Ring of Kerry. For foodies, Schull is right in the heart of Ireland's most influential fresh food production area.
We love our remoteness, surrounded by pastureland that slants away to Dunmanus Bay (2 miles as the crow flies) and the undulating headlands that surround it. We love the silence and the proximity of the weather, even though shopping and markets are also conveniently near.
Other Things to Note
Although our cottage is new to airbnb, it's been letting successfully for years, some guests returning again and again. It is managed solely for letting.
Smoking is not allowed in the cottage.
The cottage has its own garden and patio and while guests don't have access to the main house's garden, we gladly share herbs and surplus vegetables.
We are dog-friendly to dog- and people-friendly dogs.
My husband and I spent a fantastic week in Mairead’s very pretty cottage. The cottage is spacious, clean, comfortable, well equipped and perfect for two people. It has comfy beds, a full size kitchen, a glorious sun room and a pretty garden with lovely views over the fields and across the bay to the Sheep’s Head peninsular. It is perfectly situated in a peaceful and tranquil location from where we could easily reach the many sights and attractions that West Cork has to offer. It is only five minutes drive to Schull with its busy harbour, great Sunday market and a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. This is a great area for foodies. Mairead and Tony were so friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. We loved returning there each evening and even got to eat vegetables from the garden. We highly recommend.
About the Host, Mairead
I live with my husband close to the furthest SW corner of Ireland. I have a small pottery gallery and am a keen gardener. As guests we're fairly quiet and like to leave the place as if we hadn't been there. Our holidays tend to be in warm, seaside places or in lively cities - the opposites of where we live.
