The space

A luxury award winning period property, built in the time of Edward I, (we think it was built approx 1270) - the first historical mention is in 1307 when Bogo de Knovil died and his estate reverted to the Crown. So this Grade II* medieval hideaway boasts seven hundred years of history - and with its towers it feels like you are living in a castle.

Inside

Extensively refurbished in 2008, the Gatehouse offers a charming loft-style living area within its ancient structure, retaining the beams, thick walls, and stone mullion windows. A deep leather sofa, wood burning stove and delightful sleeping space, all add to a uniquely romantic experience. You can even climb up to the top of the tower, to the viewing platform!
Heating is provided by night storage heaters and the wood burning stove.
The property boasts a modern 'wet room' with shower, a fully fitted kitchen with oven and hob, fridge and small freezer. Downstairs there is a washing machine and tumble dryer if you need it.
TV with freeview, DVD player, CD player with ipod docking facility.
Please note, this ancient building's charm includes a steep spiral staircase. Access to the gallery bedroom is via a companionway ladder, and requires you to duck underneath a beam. If you have any challenges around mobility please look at the accessibility statement. Note we advise you to bring a couple of smaller bags rather than one very heavy and large (URL HIDDEN) the steep spiral staircase has some 30 steps to get to the main living area, and space on the staircase is restricted.

A truly beautiful and unique stay. An opportunity to stay in a well furnished modern yet rustic gatehouse in a peaceful location. The gatehouse was absolutely stunning and I miss it already.

A beautiful place to stay that is perfect for a quiet getaway. It is warm and cosy and has been modernised to a high standard that is respectful of the building's history whilst still giving access to technology/wifi. We had some pretty bad weather during our stay but barely noticed it as we enjoyed all of the home comforts that are provided in the gatehouse (books, dvds, music) and the welcome hamper went down very well, (especially the bottle of rosé wine!). It is perfectly situated as it is close to main roads/motorway for exploring South Wales but you cannot see or hear any traffic from inside the gatehouse. We used the kitchen on our first night to cook dinner and although it is a small kitchen, it has everything you will need for preparation and cooking. However, if you don't want to cook there is a very nice pub that is a 5 minute walk away that has friendly staff and good food at reasonable prices. I had a great short break with my fiancé and I highly recommend the gatehouse as the views from the top of the tower alone make it worth a visit and I would happily stay there again.

Fairy take experience. We loved this place! You need to be able to navigate a small tight circular stair case to access the flat but it's worth it.

The stunning pictures are probably what have you looking at the Gate House. I can say it's more impressive in real life. The property is a really smart, well furnished and perfect for a couple's weekend away. You'll need a car and some walking boots - but if it's cold, take comfort in the fact it's got a log burner as well as some really strong radiators! Before you arrive, you'll be sent really helpful instructions. Then, after you've made it up the spiral stairs into the living part of the gatehouse, you'll have a lovely welcome hamper for your efforts. Despite it being wet, cold and foggy, we had a fantastic few nights there and would thoroughly recommend for a relaxing time. If you don't believe me, just read the many, many comments in the guestbook while you enjoy a welsh cake! Thanks for having us!
