About this listing
A luxury award winning period property, built in the time of Edward I, (we think it was built approx 1270) - the first historical mention is in 1307 when Bogo de Knovil died and his estate reverted to the Crown. So this Grade II* medieval hideaway boasts seven hundred years of history - and with its towers it feels like you are living in a castle.

Extensively refurbished in 2008, the Gatehouse offers a charming loft-style living area within its ancient structure, retaining the beams, thick walls, and stone mullion windows. A deep leather sofa, wood burning stove and delightful sleeping space, all add to a uniquely romantic experience. You can even climb up to the top of the tower, to the viewing platform!
Heating is provided by night storage heaters and the wood burning stove.
The property boasts a modern 'wet room' with shower, a fully fitted kitchen with oven and hob, fridge and small freezer. Downstairs there is a washing machine and tumble dryer if you need (website hidden) with freeview, DVD player, CD player with ipod docking facility.
Please note, this ancient building's charm includes a steep spiral staircase. Access to the gallery bedroom is via a companionway ladder, and requires you to duck underneath a beam. If you have any challenges around mobility please look at the accessibility statement. Note we advise you to bring a couple of smaller bags rather than one very heavy and large case...as the steep spiral staircase has some 30 steps to get to the main living area, and space on the staircase is restricted.

The property is self contained, and has its own entrance. There is parking for two cars (one behind the other). The owners live at the other end of the garden in a sixteenth century Monmouthshire gentry house.

Absolutely breathtaking place! The photos do not do it justice, its like a fairytale place. The welcome basket was much appreciated, the bed was comfortable as was the sofa. I could not recommend this place highly enough. Thanks again Juliet for letting us stay here, we will never forget it.
Really lovely place.. Enjoyed our time there a lot. Didn't have any interaction with the owners as we didn't really need to, and in all honesty, when wanting to get away from everyone and everything for a couple of days, that's what we wanted. Beautiful building, great views from the turrets, a really nice experience staying there and im sure we will be back again. As great as warm sunny weather is, I think this place would be even better in the winter when u can get the log fire going :)
Juliette and William, thank you so much for making an absolutely magical place like the Gatehouse available for people like us to stay!
The photos and information you provide about the Gatehouse are spot on and really give you the feeling that you have a history with the Gatehouse. This really makes you feel at home and it's so easy to relax there. We had come off a fairly hectic traveling schedule and the Gatehouse was the perfect place to rest and regather ourselves.
Thank you for the welcoming basket, the treats you gave to us were awesome and much appreciated.
Our only regret is that we didn't get to meet and talk with you both. Having been in a few different time zones on our journey we kept some odd hours over those few days. We had hoped to have had the opportunity to thank you in person but as it turned out we couldn't. We are eternally grateful to you though as we both believe we could not stay anywhere more perfect!
The Gatehouse was absolutely perfect. What a beautiful and rustic place to stay. Juliet made me feel immediately welcome with a basket of goodies including a freshly baked loaf of bread—a godsend after a long drive and an empty stomach. The accommodation was faultless and I would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a getaway.
We had a lovely time staying at the gatehouse. Great views from the tower and it was lovely to stay in one night in front of the fire. Would definitely recommend.
Really lovely and unique house. We enjoyed our short stay. Many thanks for accommodating us there.
Had a lovely time, the gatehouse had everything we could ever need, including a very detailed information pack.
We would recommend this place for a romantic getaway as its beautiful and you can enjoy getting cosy in front of the fire.
A visit to Chepstow castle is also a must!
