The space

In the beautiful countryside between Siena and Arezzo, known as Valdambra (the Valley of the River Ambra), the top floor of an ancient haybarn has been converted into a spacious apartment full of light, overlooking a perfectly preserved Tuscan landscape: a unique, harmonious blend of luxuriant oak tree woods and of well kept farmland, ( a hospitable natural environment for roe deers, foxes, porcupines, squirrels, badgers, and all sorts of birds, such as skylarks, blue-tits, nightingales, hawks as well as, near the river, kingfishers, and white and grey herons); thanks to several years of organic farming, an increasing number of butterflies dance around wild flowers . At a short distance, a century-old castle still supervises the peace and quiet of the site
Carefully renovated by the owners, a couple of academics who live since 1995 in the near farmhouse , the apartment has already proved to be a welcoming holiday home, and a perfect retreat for writers, artists, composers, academics and... lovers.
Comfortably furnished and well equipped (fireplace, tv, wi-fi, central heating, a.c., stove, fridge, microwave, washing machine, kitchen tools, bath towels and bed-linen), it also benefits from a private outdoor area , with gazebo (ideal for meals, reading, conversation, daydreaming and relax) .
Excellent for a couple , but also for a small family ( the first floor apartment, a spacious loft, sleeps 2-4 people). An extra room on the ground floor of the haybarn , ( a separate cosy studio-bedroom- with kitchenette and bathroom, with shower) is also available, upon agreement.
Nearby, horse stables and riding centre, polo grounds, swimming pools, thermal springs and spas; pleasant walks through the woods lead to farmhouses, watermills, vineyards, medieval towers and charming villages where one can enjoy concerts, festivals, theatre, entertainment, food (and outlet shopping).. The haybarn is also a very convenient starting point for visiting museums and galleries of the neighbouring art cities: Siena is only 25 min away, Arezzo, 40 mns; Florence, just over one hour.Fra Siena e Arezzo, nel verde, spazioso,

Interaction with guests

Meeting our guests, when they wish, it is always a pleasant and interesting experience. We are anyway always nearby, since we live in the adjacent farmhouse.
Incontrare gli ospiti, quando lo desiderino, è sempre piacevole e interessante. Sarò sempre comunque a disposizione, nella vicina casa colonica dove vivo, per qualunque necessità.

The neighborhood

Many lovely villages in the neighbouring countryside, as well as art cities, historical gardens, museums, music and theatre, folk festivals, spas, pools, riding schools, shops (even fashionable ones), food markets and restaurants.

Getting around

Car park is not a problem near the Haybarn. Hiring a car is advisable for exploring a beautiful and not very well known territory.

Other things to note

An excellent riding school, run by an extraordinary Lady of the Horses, is located within walking distance. Guided tours to art cities and museums, can be arranged.

We had an excellent and relaxing time at Gavina's lovely place. The old haybarn is quite isolated, at the end of a long and bumpy gravel road.... Which means that you are left in absolute and total quietness - your only companions will be the 2 baby foxes (if you are lucky enough to see them, we did!), the horses and the crickets (and the numerous bugs!). The place is very nice, but what makes it very special is Gavina herself. She really is the perfect host: from welcoming you with a huge smile and with plenty of food and drinks, to showing you around (she brought us to see the morning race and f Il Palio), she goes beyond her way to make sure that you have the best time possible. Thank you Gavina for welcomng us so nicely.

this was quite a nice experience. Gavinia is an exceptional host, made us feel welcome from the first moment providing a perfect balance of looking out for us and providing privacy. A perfect location if you are looking for quiet and peace but close enough to explore Siena and Arezzo. The little towns spread around the area are interesting to explore. We had a wonderful time and left as friends. We will be back!

We found this beautiful home and had read previous reviews on the lovely was all true! The house was wonderful, secluded in a lovely garden and so peaceful, but what made it all absolutely terrific was the marvellous hostess herself. Gavina is truly wonderful.....she knows loads of stuff about the surrounding area, including the beautiful city of Siena and she took great delight in showing us around so that we didn't miss anything. She is there if you need her, as their own house is next door, but she will equally leave you to your own peace and quiet if that is what you prefer. They are a lovely couple and made us feel SO very welcome. She is entertaining and charming and totally enthusiastic about the history and her knowledge of the area is fabulous. We had a wonderful time in Tuscany, met up with friends who were staying locally, but our lovely host made our stay very special indeed. Would recommend the Haybarn and most especially Gavina and her husband. Everyone should visit Tuscany as it is so beautiful, and we will definitely go back.

Gavina and Gioachino are wonderful people! The perfect hosts. They are so caring and giving of their time and attention. When we arrived, Gavina met us to show us the way to the gorgeous property. Throughout our stay they made us feel like we were at home - from the time we arrived to a kitchen stocked with food, drinks, a wonderful bottle of wine, and homemade treats; to the time they spent letting our children play with their wonderful dogs Ugo and Isabellina, and entertaining us on the back porch with the amazing valley views; to all the perfect recommendations of things to see and places to eat; and, the highlight, seeing the neighboring horse farm and a newborn foal! We all feel like in a few short days we made true new friends. They are fabulous people! We hated to leave our home away from home in Tuscany, and most of all hated to leave Gavina and Gioachino. The accommodations were exactly what we wanted. Away from the tourists and crowds of the larger cities, but still an easy (less than 30 minute) drive to beautiful Siena (drive there, parking is easy with access to the old city center), and an easy train trip up to Florence. It was also the perfect location from which to explore Tuscany. So many small medieval towns and vineyards easily accessible from this spot. And the small towns nearby, particularly Ambra, were fun to explore. Shopping in the little food market, having an incredible dinner at a restaurant Gavina recommended ... it was simply perfect. The converted barn is so beautiful, comfortable and homey, we could not have been more pleased. Everything we needed was provided. There were days we just wanted to stay there. The wildlife was amazing - deer, pheasants, magpies, swallows (including babies nesting in the open part of the barn), little lizards ... we never saw the wild boar, but heard she was near. There is an easy hike to the nearby river and castle, and as I said above, if the timing works out, having Gavina provide a tour of the stables and horses is a fantastic experience. We hated to see our time here come to an end. If we make it back to Tuscany, this will be the place we stay! Grazie mille, Gavina and Gioachino!! Doug, Linda, Izzy and Cecelia

Response from Gavina:
Dear Doug, and Linda, and Izzy and Cecelia, thank you for the wonderful description of your experience here in the Valdambra. You enjoyed so many of the things we also enjoy of this place (even the little newborn swallows under the porch) that no wonder we got on so well. And no wonder we miss you so much..... You are very very special people and luckily we met... Mille auguri!!!!!

Gavina has fashioned an oasis of calm in the midst of Tuscany. Having battled our way though tourist-choked Venice & Florence we were very ready to retreat for a few days. We were greeted with joy and enthusaism by Gavina who anticipated every need and want. The "HayBarn" is anything but, a rustic yet somehow elegant place that immediately feels like home. She has not only stocked the cupboards and closets with the little things that made our stay enjoyable, but provided food for our first meals as well. Any request for assitance was met with prompt and helpful advice. Our several days there were restful, peaceful and delightful. The place is spotless and comfortable. Though seemingly off the beaten track - and it is (which is why we chose it) one can readily be back into touring mode within minutes - if you wish. Highest recommendation!

Response from Gavina:
Dear Bob I am so glad you felt at home and enjoyed our green retreat in Valdambra. You were the ideal guests who appreciated the special atmosphere of this part of Tuscany, its being away from the crowds but not isolated. The reason why we too decided it would be our home after a year search. Thanks for the fantastic review. Hope you and Kim will come again.... Cordiali saluti Gavina

We had a really wonderful experience staying in the Haybarn for two weeks in December, encompassing both Christmas and the new year. The space is cozy and comfortable--just as quiet and secluded as promised, but in easy driving access to all sorts of towns and cities, thermal spas, ruins, and abbeys. We passed many enjoyable mornings and days simply enjoying the property and walking around the surrounding countryside. Gavina was very warm and welcoming--really above and beyond our expectations (which were high given the rave reviews she's had on this website). She made several unique and very good recommendations about things to do and see in the area, included us in her New Year's Eve party, and generally made sure that we had everything we needed. We appreciated all the small, kind touches, and would return to this listing in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.

I am an Academic and my research field is Iconology and Philosophy. After being brought up and educated abroad, I finally moved to the Sienese countryside, where I live with my Husband, an academic as well , 5 cats and a dog (no kids, but many friends, and friend's children around). Our house was formerly a large farmhouse, so we have plenty of space. We enjoy making the Haybarn available to people who like nature, books, art, music, good food and quiet. We offer marvellous isolation without solitude, since a very lively and interesting human and cultural context is just round the corner. Long walks, horsebackriding, yoga and cookery classes are among the pleasures of this area, as well as rejuvenating spas; both in winter and summer there is so much, concerts, parties, exhibitions, festivals, to choose that sometimes we just want to stay at home and entertain ourselves with relaxed conversation and a candle-light dinner, on the terrace overlooking the valley. The river Ambra, the evening breeze, and the crickets, provide the music.
