We find that guests really want to set out each day to see the attractions and we help them understand what the options and details are so they get the most from their vacation time. We call and chat or exchange emails about good restaurants so they make their reservations before the arrive, so they won't be disappointed. We also rent a cottage in the yard and if you are interested in a longer stay, please see our other listing. Please read our wonderful reviews!
We are the best location for easy walking access to all of the historic attractions. The museum is 3 blocks away. The Aquarium and Marion Square are only 2 blocks. Visitors don't need to navigate narrow, confusing one-way streets to get to our house like some of the other rentals in the Historic District. We are one of the easiest locations in the District, just one turn from any of downtown's 3 main traffic corridors.
Our guests walk everywhere. Even if they rent a car at the airport, the usually don't drive because we are so near what they want to see and where they want to eat. Occasionally guests rent bikes to cover more ground. Often people take a carriage or walking tour to get an overview, then go back later to see things that sounded really interesting. Walking is easiest.
There is a Starbucks just up the street. We provide coffee and tea and a muffin in the morning.
Free on site parking. You can also rent a bike nearby. Most people who think they need a rental car end up not using it.
WiFi - Our WiFi network is named Charlotte. The password is Siamese! (Note, you won't be able to sign on unless you capitalize the S and add the exclamation point.) Siamese!
One recommendation: please pack one of those small travel umbrellas. We have loaned all of ours out and they have disappeared into the sunset. If you don't want to bring one, you can buy an umbrella two blocks away at the Rite Aid drugstore on East Bay St.
We encourage guests to enjoy the full use of our house! People naturally gravitate to the beautiful porch if the weather is nice. It's a great place to enjoy morning coffee and the newspaper as you prepare for the day, or in the afternoon, to chat over a glass of wine, and get ready to go out for supper. Our den is big and inviting, especially if the fireplace is on, and people can put their feet up and watch the evening news or a movie, if they like.
Interaction with Guests
We interact with guests a lot, if that is what they seem to want. I am as available as they desire, or as invisible as seems appropriate. Some people want complete privacy and others want to get to know us and learn about Charleston and what it's like to live here. You can read our reviews to get a sense of how we interact with guests. Most people are very friendly and outgoing and we really get to know them and feel a genuine pang when they must finally leave; it has been quite amazing to meet so many wonderful folks.
People love our location because it is an easy walk to everything they come to see! 3 blocks from King Street, 2 blocks from Meeting Street, 1 block from East Bay. This is a quiet tree-lined neighborhood, unlike some of the hotels or B&B's on busy streets that have so much traffic and street noise.
The Historic District has a wonderful free trolly that you can hop on or off as much as you like at their various stops located in convenient places. Catch a free ride all over town as it makes it loop.
Other Things to Note
Starbucks is a half block away. Harris Teeter grocery is 2.5 blocks away. The downtown shopping center with a drug store, liquor and wine store, and deli is 2 blocks away.
No smoking, no EXCESSIVE drinking. We are well suited for older couples or maybe a professional lady or solo traveling woman who wants a very safe environment, or just tame folks who behave respectably. There is nothing wild going on at our house.
Tanning Products and Acne Medications. If someone has an airbrushed tan, uses tanning cosmetics or Accutane (Isotretinoin) or similar meds, our sheets, towels, and even upholstery will be ruined. Please bring your own bed linens and towels if you use any of these products. If you’ve forgotten, we can give you some permanently discolored but clean sheets for the bed or to drape on the sofa and chairs. Ruined sheets, towels or upholstery will mean we’ll keep your damage deposit.
Vaughn was a tremendous host, she made my Mother's Day weekend with my daughter-in-law very special. I didn't feel like I was coming into a strangers home, I felt like I was welcomed by my big sister. My only complaint is that she such an amazing cook, I'm going to have to diet upon my return. Thank you Vaughn for a great weekend
I loved the place. The accommodations were very nice. The locations was perfect for walking to anywhere from the Battery to King Street. Very nice.
Vaughan's home is in a lovely old neighborhood of Charleston. Her home is beautiful, and we loved staying there. We stayed in the Guest suite and had plenty of space. The only time that we needed to take a cab anywhere was to and from the airport. Vaughan can provide some fantastic recommendations of local businesses/bakeries/transportation options, and that was really helpful. We walked everywhere. It was a mile or so to the most popular restaurant area and the market, but the walk was very quick and all through historic neighborhoods and areas. We loved our stay here, and Vaughan's breakfast on Sunday morning was fantastic!
Vaughan is a lovely host, wonderful person with a beautiful house in a great location. Short walk to everything. Tour by Vaughan when we arrived was a treat. Breakfast every morning delicious.
I am so glad my boyfriend and I stayed with Vaughan during our trip to Charleston. This was our first airbnb experience, and we are now hooked! Vaughan is a charming hostess who made us feel right at home. Her historic house is lovely and within walking distance of most hotspots. However, she dropped us off at our desired restaurants both nights of our stay, so I did not have to walk far in my heels. The bed was comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. Given the cost of most Charleston hotel rooms, I think our time with Vaughan was an excellent value. I would definitely stay with her again.
The host is the best you can ever hope for. She is warm, kind, intelligent and generous. I traveled alone and stayed with the host for 5 nights the week before July 4th. Her home is beautiful with fantastic Southern charm and is within walking distance to almost everything. The host will educate you on the history, places to visit and life!
I felt loved during my stay and I can't wait to go back and visit!
My husband and I had a wonderful time staying here! The room is as beautiful as the photo! Our host welcomed us with such warmth that we felt completely comfortable using the adjoining den and eating breakfast on the front porch. Our host was very solicitous of our needs whether supplying us breakfast, extra towels, or touring suggestions. Our host took us on an informative and personal tour of Charleston that really added to our enjoyment of the city. The Big Guest Suite is located very close to downtown. We walked everywhere. Our host had a good sense of what we would prefer to see since were were not staying long enough to see it all. We took all of her suggestions and were happy we did. As others have said, we, too, feel like we now have a friend in Charleston. We would definitely recommend staying here and enjoying true southern hospitality.

About the Host, Vaughan
We enjoy having guests and we take wonderful care of them! We tell our visitors that we think of them as long lost cousins who have finally come to see us. It's fun to have folks who are seeing our beautiful Historic District for the first time.
