Response from Áine, In Kenmare Bay:

one knows when one is receiving guests and one knows when one is being treated like rather an inconvenience for being there...

This family would have been much happier in a self-catering situation. So would I.
Guests might want the run of the house for themselves, and this family most definitely fell into that category.
Of course I invite guests down to the main sitting room. By all means. All depends and it quickly becomes apparent how to set ones boundaries....when one must protect one's corner for oneself, lest the 'herd of elephants' come and over-run and trample all in their path.

This family were soon dubbed 'the herd of elephants' and yes, I failed miserably to keep some sort of order.
Throws and cushions from upstairs rooms ended up being discovered in other rooms downstairs. An heirloom knitted doll which is an ornament in the main king bedroom was discovered being dragged across a glass window downstairs by a very young child. A family gang up and a comment 'oh its just a doll' (from the mother) where the step too far....and no problem with babies having baths if only the mother had communicated beforehand and booked the room with the bath and does a man in his sixties really have to run up and down the stairs between one room and another for several trips between the hours of 4pm and bedtime and again the next day.
Aine was not only not happy, Aine was thinking of giving up B&B altogether. Only, she that the next guest who rolled in - also Australians - and after tea and a very civilized chat about adventure by the fire in the big sitting room a feeling of peace is restored......not that the guest sitting room/ library room with its natural materials brick red velvet sofa, african textiles and shelves of books has ever caused anybody any pain before Josie. And Josie all rooms have views - all look on mountains, trees, pristine landscape. but you know, one knows when one is receiving guests who are interested in other places and cultures and one knows when one is being treated like rather an inconvenience for being there........
as I said, 'had this family really, truly communicated their needs to me in good time, I would have suggested they would have been much happier in a self-catering.
And so would I. And so would I!

You are welcome Karin.
Also, please when you have the time, you might copy and paste your review above onto trip advisor for Kenmare Eco Lodge. I have only registered this summer and keep forgetting to ask people to post reviews there. It would be much appreciated. All the best, and you both are welcome back anytime. 'Hope Connemara was an equal joy as Kenmare/Kerry. all the best, Aine
