The Space

This is a newly constructed up/down duplex house with two suites that will be achieving LEED Gold certification as a pilot home in the Canada Green Building Council's LEED for Homes program. This home rental will be of particular interest for those seeking to experience or learn more about building a similarly sustainable home as it incorporates technologies such as vegetative green roofs, greywater reclaimation, rainwater harvesting, hydronic heating, hotwater heatpumps, and more passive design elements for natural ventilation and daylighting of this healthy home.
Upper suite (currently available on airbnb) has open living room/kitch with patio doors extending living space onto green roof garden, awesome afternoon sunsets and bbqs. Bath is large wet room with unique open shower. Giant master bedroom with beautiful morning light. Upper suite has queen in master bedroom; sofa in living room doubles as trundle bed (2 single beds), perfect for kids or additional guests.
Main floor suite (not currently available) has large open space living room/kitchen, large bath with steam shower and separate sunken tub. Master bed has queen excellent morning sun through skylight, room in rear contains two twins. 16 ft of sliding glass doors lead out to rear patio with BBQ, covered seating area and native plant garden. Lots of blueberries!!!!
Both suites are tastefully furnished with heated floors for added comfort. New, high quality linens are provided and both suites have their own washer/dryer. Kitchens are well-appointed with full cooking tools and ample glass/dinnerware. Suites have new appliances and bbqs.
Well-mannered pets are welcome, but advance notification is appreciated :)

Two blocks from Royal Athletic Park for Rifflandia festival Sept. 12-15th, beer fest Sept 6-7.Nearby and throughout summer include public market at the Hudson, Moss st market on saturdays, Highlanders football (soccer) club, victoria harbour cats (baseball) and much more.

Guest Access

Private, peaceful, spacious and bright suite with insuite washer dryer and other appliances and great southwest facing deck. two bikes are available for rent, universally sized for just about anyone. bring your own helmets, or i can provide with locks too. BC has mandatory bike helmet law.m
my neice 14yrs old is also available to babysit for $10/hr when available.

Interaction with Guests

As much or as little interaction as you want. the suites are up/down. When i'm living in one or other of them that means we may see each other coming or going, but that's about it. Generally i don't see people or interact with them other than to coordinate meeting and maybe answer questions via text throughout their stay. But i'm also happy to provide more advice about your visit or talk about the design and build of the house if that interests you as well.

Getting around

walk and bike is perfect way to get around victoria and i have two bikes available for rent with bike rack, helmets and locks. every bus route is within 5 min walk from the house, and there is room to park your car directly out front of house if you want to drive over here. but you absolutely don't need a car to enjoy victoria and i highly recommend biking as preferred way to get around. there are car rental companies with pickup locations within 10min walk as well if you want to tour vancouver island. but ferry from vancouver is unnecessarily pricy to bring car over for if you just plan on touring within victoria in my opinion.

  • Allison, our host, was gracious and welcoming. She fully oriented us to our accommodations, which included both the upstairs and downstairs units of her lovely, architecturally significant home. The house is designed to be both comfortable and ecological, with a lovely outdoor terrace and a green backyard. The house is on a quiet cul de sac close to downtown Victoria, with mature trees and lots of privacy. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. All our expectations were more than met and we will strongly consider staying there again when we return to Victoria.

  • Our host Allison was not only prompt, but everything she said about the apartment was beyond our expectations. The house was beautiful, location outstanding and the rental bikes were actually free. Super bonus!! The open shower experience was quite luxurious and her recommendations were spot on. We hit up a ton of places on her hit list and it really made our experience of Victoria feel like we were locals hitting the best cuisine out of the commercial areas.

  • My stay at Allison's amazing apartment was all too brief. I can't say enough about the open feeling of the space and the natural light. The bathroom is AWESOME. Allison was there to meet me, gave some great suggestions about places to eat and get groceries. She was the perfect host for me, available if need be but otherwise she left me to myself. I would definitely stay again!

  • Allison was communicative and provided lots of great info to us for our stay in the city. It's a great location and a beautiful space. Thanks Allison!

  • My boyfriend and I came up here for a quiet weekend away and got exactly that.

We only interacted with Allison upon arriving to get the keys and have a quick run down on how to operate some of the amenities. The times we did text her she was prompt. Her suggestions for things to do in the area were available in the house which were incredibly helpful.

While we didn't use the bikes available, it was nice to know they were there, as Victoria is super easy to get around on bike.

The balcony was perfect for end of the day wind down, being able to enjoy the sunset from a comfortable, quiet space.

Downtown Victoria is a 10-15 minute walk from the house, which is nice, because you can get away from the "thick of it" and enjoy the neighborhood (which is great).

We spent a significant amount of time in Fernwood, the great, funky little neighborhood the apartment is closest to. It has some great restaurants and businesses to explore.

Overall, incredibly happy we decided to stay here and I would definitely stay here again.

  • Great spot, simple living, firm/comfortable bed, and fantastic bathroom. It's about a mile walk to downtown with plenty of good food and coffee spots nearby or on the way to downtown. We really enjoyed the patio for wine and lounging in the evening when the sun was out.

  • Allison hosted Justin & I for our one year anniversary. We really enjoyed staying in her amazing place. The space was so lovely, the bed/linens were cozy & the bathroom/heated floors had us wishing she were designing a new home for us! There was an informative booklet which detailed her design & building of this LEED certified home on the bookshelf which we read & found really interesting, if you are into that kind of thing. We were late checking in with Allison but she used airbnb messages & texts to check in on us to make sure we weren't lost & to coordinate a new meeting time which we really appreciated. She was gracious upon meeting us & gave us a quick rundown & tour of the space. We didn't end up seeing her or running into her again during our two night stay which made it feel really nice & private, yet we knew she was just downstairs & a text away if we had any questions. She has a great neighborhood map & wifi info on the fridge & we had no problems figuring out the heat or any other features of the home so we didn't have any need to contact her during our stay. She gave us really amazing recommendations for food which was our main focus. The owner operated Parsonage Café in the neighborhood was definitively our favorite place, we went two days in a row! What a hidden gem! They roast their own Fernwood Coffee & offer a three topping Montreal Style Bagel breakfast sandwich that is out of this world delicious & a yummy Reuben Sandwich using The Whole Beast smoked brisket, all in a cozy space that is great for people watching! The prices were super reasonable & we didn't have to wait an hour in line like we did for our breakfast at popular spot Jam Café downtown. We also really enjoyed ice cream sandwiches next door at Cold Comfort Creamery. Our other favorite coffee of the trip was Bows & Arrows roasted beans at Habit Coffee which has two locations walking distance from the house. The closer is in the LEED certified Atrium building on the corner of Blanshard & Yates & the other is on Pandora & Government surrounded by really cute shopping boutiques. We wished we had a few more days to enjoy more food & sights in Victoria. Allison provided us a wonderful sanctuary & we would love to stay in her lovely home again on a future trip. Thanks again Allison!

  • We had a wonderful stay in Victoria, Allison was extremely helpful and gave us lots of great tips on getting to and from Victoria and ideas on what to do during our stay. We loved the accommodation and would definitely stay here again if we visit Victoria in the future, walking distance to many of the sights in Victoria, nice and open layout capturing the afternoon sun. Thanks again for a great stay.

  • My two friends and I stayed at Allison's place for a weekend and we're so glad we made the right choice! It was in walking distance from everything downtown, but far enough away in a quiet area. The design is great: lots of windows, open concept, a patio that gets afternoon/evening sun, and an over-sized shower. We only stayed two nights and thought we'd eat out for one of them, but ended up staying in and cooking both nights to barbecue.

Allison was easy to contact, prompt, and friendly; a great host. The next time we take a trip to Victoria we'll definitely be staying there again.

  • Beautiful, quiet, light filled space with a great little patio. Mattress was very comfortable and the bathroom was fantastic! Lots of storage for extended stays. Although surrounded by other houses and apartment buildings, the suite and patio felt very private thanks to good design, window placement and thoughtful planting of trees.

Very convenient location; short walk to downtown, lots of good food options nearby. Taco Justice, the food truck that is often parked in a lot on Cook Street behind Wellburn's grocery, is definitely worth trying. Mount Royal Bagels was great too and only a couple of blocks away.

The only thing I had trouble with was the front door lock. Even after 5 weeks of using it, it still often took me several tries to lock the door!!!

Allison was a great host. Easy to get a hold of and full of information about Victoria.

I'm a local Victorian, spent my 20s in Montreal and NYC, then came home to Victoria and designed and built this house. Initially obsessed with modern architecture, this passion met with a desire to live more lightly; this house project is my experiment with integrating greenbuilding technologies and practices and overcoming the technical, regulatory, and financial barriers preventing their mainstreaming. From this project, i have done some green building consulting for homeowners, developers and the BC provincial government. I'm currently working for local government as the environmental issues planner for Victoria and am responsible for developing the city's climate action program, both for its own operations and in partnership with the community to reduce energy and greenhouse gases in VIctoria. I love my job. I also love this city, and giving visitors tips so they can enjoy a most local experience. Victoria is rich with natural and manmade bounty, there are outstanding small/local eats and cafes to be found in nearby neighbourhoods. i picked the location of this house to build because it's on a quiet deadend street, while being situated a 5min walk to core of downtown or to the heart of fernwood village. Located on the border of downtown and fernwood, this is an extremely walkable and vibrant urban neighbourhood. come visit...
