Interaction with Guests
As much or as little interaction as you want. the suites are up/down. When i'm living in one or other of them that means we may see each other coming or going, but that's about it. Generally i don't see people or interact with them other than to coordinate meeting and maybe answer questions via text throughout their stay. But i'm also happy to provide more advice about your visit or talk about the design and build of the house if that interests you as well.
walk and bike is perfect way to get around victoria. every bus route is within 5 min walk from the house, and there is room to park your car directly out front of house if you want to drive over here. but you absolutely don't need a car to enjoy victoria and i highly recommend biking as preferred way to get around. there are car rental companies with pickup locations within 10min walk as well if you want to tour vancouver island. but ferry from vancouver is unnecessarily pricy to bring car over for if you just plan on touring within victoria in my opinion.
pretty easy going around here. just leave the place tidy and help me out by putting your sheets/towels in the wash upon leaving if time permits. oh, and please let me know if something could improve the stay for the next guest. and take 30 secs to write a review of the place after you leave, i'm really enjoying having the suite as a vacation rental, but i can't afford to have too many vacant days, reviews will help.
Finally, kids/families are welcome, but please do let me know if your party is greater than 2 people upon booking, no extra charge, but I'll be able to advise as to whether will be comfortable and prepare the suite appropriately for your arrival.
Please note, cat is in downstairs suite only.
Added note which seems like it would go without saying for most, but as the market for airbnb matures I've learned this is no longer true in all cases, so bear with my little rant to follow. This particular listing on airbnb, and the reason i use airbnb, is to embrace and participate in sustainable consumption and the sharing economy and to offer a unique a local experience for visitors. If you are using airbnb to host a party and/or cram as many of your friends into a suite as possible, know that this place is not for you, and on a grander scale, that you are singlehandedly infringing on the potential of the sharing economy to radically transform the way people interact and trade with one another. And, in doing so, you are messing with the delicate balance of a network predicated on trust among strangers, which in this day and age is a pretty amazing thing to be a part of. Are you down with the program? If not, that's cool, just don't request a booking here, and maybe consider whether airbnb is the right place for you this time around.
About the Host, Allison
I'm a local Victorian, spent my 20s in Montreal and NYC, then came home to Victoria and designed and built this house. Initially obsessed with modern architecture, this passion met with a desire to live more lightly; this house project is my experiment with integrating greenbuilding technologies and practices and overcoming the technical, regulatory, and financial barriers preventing their mainstreaming. From this project, i have done some green building consulting for homeowners, developers and the BC provincial government. I'm currently working for local government as the environmental issues planner for Victoria and am responsible for developing the city's climate action program, both for its own operations and in partnership with the community to reduce energy and greenhouse gases in VIctoria. I love my job.
I also love this city, and giving visitors tips so they can enjoy a most local experience. Victoria is rich with natural and manmade bounty, there are outstanding small/local eats and cafes to be found in nearby neighbourhoods. i picked the location of this house to build because it's on a quiet deadend street, while being situated a 5min walk to core of downtown or to the heart of fernwood village. Located on the border of downtown and fernwood, this is an extremely walkable and vibrant urban neighbourhood.
