Entire property; you are the only guests. We will email your houseguide with security codes to enter the property AFTER WE'VE RECEIVED YOUR SIGNED RENTAL AGREEMENT. Please use caution when exploring the jungle and stay at least 10 feet from the lip of the lava tube (inactive, but the rocks are sharp)

We live in California. You can reach us by email or phone. Our caretaker, Matt, lives across the street and can help if something goes wrong.
Mahi Oli'Oli rests at the end of a 1/4 mile private drive through virgin rainforest. Our neighborhood is zoned for 5 to 10 acre parcels therefore population density is low. Neighbors are helpful, respectful, and mostly invisible.
County bus service to hilo runs from Pahoa every 2-4 hours. Best to rent a car.
Other Things to Note
Many guest write in reviews or in our guestbook that the best days are spent entirely at Mahi Oli'Oli. They have a hard time leaving, even for a short drive to the beach or to the warm pond.

Rules and Regulations – Part 1
1. Check-In Time is after 4:00pm Hawaii Time and Checkout is 11:00 am Hawaii Time.
Early check-in / late check-out by arrangement, if possible.
2. Mahi Oli’Oli is a NONSMOKING residence.
3. Pets ARE NOT PERMITTED in Mali Oli'Oli under any conditions.
4. Rental is limited to 2 adults with 1-2 children on our air mattress
allowed (linens provided).
5. A damage/reservation deposit of $200.00 is required. This deposit must
will appear as an "authorization" rather than as a debit transaction on your credit card upon check in to this property. Upon clear inspection following your check-out we will instruct AirBnB to reverse this authorization. The security deposit is NOT applied toward rent; however it is fully refundable provided the following provisions are met:
--No damage is done to the home or its contents, beyond normal wear and tear.
--All northern and eastern windows and doors are closed
when you are in the house during rainstorms.
--All doors and windows are closed and locked whenever you leave the house
(even if no storm threatens) such that no rainwater enters the house.
--Any rain that might enter the house is dried immediately to prevent damage. .
--Damp/wet towels and clothing are hung on hooks or drying racks, never on furniture,
never on wood flooring. At the end of your stay all damp or wet items are left hanging in
the bathroom or on the bathroom (stone) floor.
--All lights, fans, and appliances (including stove, oven, ceiling fan, power strip for home
theater system) are turned off whenever you leave the house.
--Contents and artworks within the home are intact. No charges are incurred due to
contraband, pets or collection of rents or services rendered during the stay.
--All debris, rubbish and waste are placed in the appropriate receptacles
during your stay and soiled dishes are placed in the sink and cleaned. Compost is
tossed into forest to the left of the generator shed. Please use outdoor trash bins
adjacent to the back deck off the bathroom.: blue bin for recyclable bottles & cans, beige
bin for trash that exceeds capacity of under-sink trash.
--We will provide you with 1 guest set of keys for your use during your
stay (an extra set may be request before arrival). Guest keys will be found
in the lockbox attached to the main sliding glass door at the cottage. We
will send you the code for the lockbox upon receipt of these forms and
booking confirmation from AirBnB. At the end of your stay please close and lock all
windows and doors and return all keys to the lock-box on the front door.
Generator Shed keys are to be returned to the Kitchen closet on the hook
where you will find them on your arrival. Please note: there will be an
extra set of house/gate keys in the lockbox, and we ask that you always
keep those in the lockbox should you misplace your set. Should you need
to use them, please return them to the lockbox immediately.
-- No linens or towels are lost or damaged.
--You adhere to 11 AM checkout (exceptions can be discussed at time of booking).
--The renter is not evicted by the owner (or representative of the owner) or
by local law enforcement.

protect. No loud noises, music or parties are permitted nor are any other activities that
might negatively affect the quality of life of our neighbors.
Rules and Regulations – Part 2
8. Keys for the generator shed are inside the kitchen cupboard with the gecko pull (where the voltmeter is located). Please check the fuel level in the generator gas tank in the evening or before leaving Mahi Oli’Oli for 24 hours or longer to be sure that the tank is at least half full. Gasoline in the tank enables the system to start the generator automatically thus maintaining adequate charge level in the battery bank. If you are not comfortable with filling the tank, please call Matt, our caretaker, at (phone number hidden) after you’ve observed that the generator requires more fuel. For those of you who like nerdy, techy stuff, you can monitor the charge level using the meter in the gecko cupboard. (fully charged status displays as 60 volts, system shutdown is at 51 but genny comes on at 52 to prevent power loss to the cottage). It's OK to use a night light through the night and OK to use compact fluorescent or LED lamps without concern. Please turn Kitchen, incandescen, pendant lamps completely off when kitchen tasks are complete.
9. Parking is limited to 4 vehicles in the designated parking area. The circular drive
will accommodate two to three additional vehicles for day visitors during your stay.
10. HURRICANE OR STORM POLICY—No refunds will be given unless: The National
Weather Service orders mandatory evacuations in a “Tropical Storm/Hurricane Warning”
area and/or a mandatory evacuation order has been given for the “Tropical
Storm/Hurricane Warning” area of residence of a vacationing guest. The day that the
National Weather Service orders a mandatory evacuation order in a “Tropical
Storm/Hurricane Warning” area we will refund:
- Any unused portion of rent from a guest currently registered;
-Any unused portion of rent from a guest who is scheduled to arrive and wants to shorten
their stay to come in after the Hurricane Warning is lifted; and
-Any advance rents collected or deposited for a reservation that is scheduled to
arrive during the Hurricane Warning period.
PAYMENT — Your reservation is secure upon receipt of at least 50% of
your rental fee. Balance is due 30 days before arrival. Please make
payments in the form of traveler’s checks, bank money orders, cashier’s
checks or personal checks, payable to Robert A. Carrere or using Pay Pal (which accepts credit cards or transfers from your personal PayPal account.),
CANCELLATIONS — Strict: 50% refund up until 1 week prior to arrival, except AirBnB fees. AirBnB's commission of 3-12% is not refunded
MAXIMUM OCCUPANCY — The maximum number of guests
sleeping is limited to two adults with space for two more on an air
mattress--total of 4 persons. Children are welcome and each counted as a person.
Our minimum (website hidden) two nights.
INCLUSIVE FEES — Rates include a one-time linen-towel setup.
NO DAILY CLEANING SERVICE — While one set of fresh linens and bath towels
is provided by the cleaning fee, daily cleaning service is not included in the
rental rate. Two beach towels are provided. No other towels or linens
may be taken out of the house.
RATE CHANGES — Rates are subject to change without notice. Payment of 50% deposit or full payment locks the rate when you confirm your reservation with Mahi Oli'Oli.
FALSIFIED RESERVATIONS — Any reservation obtained under false
pretense will be subject to forfeiture of advance payment, deposit and/or
rental money, and the party will not be permitted to check-in.
WRITTEN EXCEPTIONS—Any exceptions to the above-mentioned
policies must be approved in writing in advance.

discharge from any and all claims, demands, debts, contracts, expenses, causes of action, lawsuits, damages and liabilities, of every kind and nature, whether known or unknown, in law or equity, that I ever had or may have, arising from or in any way related to
occupying/living/temporarily residing on the premises of land, known as Mahi Oli’Oli,
owned by Andy Pesce and Bob Carrere in the County of HAWAII, in the State of
HAWAII at the following address: 13-653 Pohoiki Road, Pahoa, Hawaii, 96778
provided that this waiver of liability does not apply to any acts of gross negligence, or
intentional, willful or wanton misconduct.
I/we understand that the activities associated with vacationing/temporarily residing in the
aforementioned weekend/guest house could involve dangerous risks and could cause
serious or grievous injuries, including bodily injury, damage to personal property and/or
death should anything unexpected occur during the course of my/our stay. That injuries
can also occur because of the condition of the property (both inside and out) and that the
land may pose such dangerous conditions due to insects, spiders, lava or mud and; that
there are always risks involved when operating utilities such as a stove, oven, washing
machine etc. or other natural and man-made hazards. On behalf of myself, my heirs,
assigns and next of kin, I waive all claims for damages, injuries and death sustained to me or my property that I may have against the aforementioned released party to such activity whether caused by the ordinary negligence of the released party or otherwise, with the exception of acts of gross negligence, or intentional, willful or wanton misconduct as

between the parties, and supercedes any prior written or oral agreements between them
concerning the subject matter of this WAIVER AND RELEASE. The provisions of this
WAIVER AND RELEASE may be waived, altered, amended or repealed, in whole or in
part, only upon the prior written consent of all parties.
I/WE have read, understand and fully agree to the terms of this WAIVER AND
RELEASE. I/WE understand and confirm that by signing this WAIVER AND
RELEASE I/WE have given up considerable future legal rights. I/WE have signed this
Agreement freely, voluntarily, under no duress or threat of duress, without inducement,
promise or guarantee being communicated to me. My/Our signature/s is/are proof of
my/our intention to execute a complete and unconditional WAIVER AND RELEASE of
all liability to the full extent of the law. I/We am/are 18 years of age or older and
mentally competent to enter into this waiver. This agreement and its terms and
provisions will include any minors who accompany me or who are under my care. I/We

Mahi Oli'Oli is an amazing place, not only is it private and secluded, away from traffic and neighbors, it offers a sanctuary in the rain forest that refreshes and renewed our spirit. Our visit to Mahi Oli'Oli was designed to be special, a tranquil retreat from daily life and busy vacations, where we could truly spend quality time together, 11 days to celebrate our 45th anniversary in the serenity of old Hawaii. From the moment of our arrival, to the day of our departure, we were never disappointed! This secluded "kauhale" (home) was everything promised on the AirBnB website and more. While this lovely cottage is situated on the "rainy" side of the Big Island (30 minutes from Hilo) we were graced with light showers at night and clear skies and sunshine during the day! Our mornings began with coffee and local fruit on our Lanai as we "drank in" the beauty of each new day. It was like our own "Garden of Eden" with tropical plants and fruit trees spread across the well manicured grounds. Whether we walked the grounds or "hiked" the 1/2 mile driveway to the road, there were always new discoveries awaiting our viewing. My wife was most impressed by the variety of bromeliades and rare plants on display throughout the property. Complementing this visual display was the fragarance of flowers and the day and evening songs of nature (including the "chirp" of coqui frogs) that confirmed our retreat from city sounds. With all of nature's display, we would be remiss not to comment on the unique features of this "green home". When they say that they are "off the grid", they are! All power is solar power, backed up by a generator that we never needed. With strong wifi and a fully equipped kitchen (gas stove, toaster, microwave, and a super "frig") one would never suspect that batteries provided more electricity (110v AC) than we could possibly use! A chearful bathroom with hot showers completed the package. Complementing these amenities, was special ceiling lights and a fan, strategically located over our large, comfortable bed, that stirred cool breezes from screened windows and two sliding doors. Despite the joys of our "hideaway", its proximity to National parks and historical/cultural sites cannot be understated. To facilitate faster travel, Hawaii opened a new saddleback highway between Hilo and Kona taking much of the commuter traffic off the coastal or "belt" road. This change affords a more pleasant and leasurely driving experience, bringing dining sites and entertainment venues closer to "home". Volcanoes National Park and Hawaii Tropical Botanial Garden are two exceptional sites not to be missed! In summary, our time at Mahi Oli'Oli was the ultimate Aloha experience!
The house was absolutely incredible! Worth the drive! I absolutely would recommend this spot to anyone. And Bob and Andy were extremely pleasant to work with. The house is truly an oasis. We will be back!
Mahi Oli'Oli is a gem. Truly a beautiful home and area - I could see myself returning many times in the future. Andy, Bob, and Matt make your stay truly delightful - I could not imagine better hosts.
If I could give Mahi Oli'Oli (and Bob and Andy) six stars, I would. Bob and Andy have built a beautiful home in a magical setting, far from stress and the city. The house is in the Puna district of the Big Island. This is the more remote, jungle, rainforest side of the island. It's gorgeous and lush and ideal if you're looking for a real getaway from the rest of the world. The house and the landscaping are perfectly appointed with everything you need at your fingertips, tastefully decorated, beautifully laid out (french press for coffee! you can stare out at the jungle from the shower! great hammock! so many quiet corners to relax in!). The area is phenomenal, too. For any surfers, you're only 2 miles from one of the island's best and most "local" surf breaks (Pohoiki - though watch out for the reef!). And you're not far from Honoli'i in Hilo, an awesome wave that peels right and left. The volcano park is close by, but even closer are some less-known big island gems: the Kalapana road (one of the most scenic coastal drives on the planet); Kapoho tide pools; the mango groves overhead as you drive to Isaac Hale park. I can't say enough about this house and this part of the world. I had an incredible vacation. Thank you Bob and Andy for creating this bit of paradise.
(oh, and even though Mahi Oli'Oli is in an out-of-the-way, private setting, it has incredible wifi! a bonus!)
This house exceeded our expectations, and our expectations were pretty high going in. The photos make the place look amazing, but we thought, you know, places always look a little more ordinary when you see them in real life. Not so this time! We drove in at night and were immediately impressed with the beautiful little house, but we couldn't really see our surroundings. When we woke up the next morning, we were stunned at the gorgeous view and practically giddy about the tasteful landscaping, the luxurious lanai, and the near-total privacy. This house is a good half-hour drive or more from most sightseeing, but it is so beautiful, we actually went out of our way to stay home some days. We love solitude and nature, but we also love modern life, so the very natural-yet-modern house was perfect to us. And thank goodness for the good wi-fi -- the night before we left our flight was cancelled and I had to call via Skype to fix the situation. It was no problem, and I was soon back to enjoying my last night in paradise. There's no cable TV, but we brought a Chromecast and had plenty of access that way any time we wanted it. Most of the time, though, we left the TV off and soaked up all the beauty. It's the kind of peace you wish you could bottle and bring back home.
What a great place! Driving up a private drive, you pass a couple of houses until you get to Mahi Oil'Oli at the end. Looping around the driveway you are able to see the various mini gardens and orchard all over the property plus the separate deck. Removing your shoes and wntering the building, you will feel quite happy this will be your home for the next few days. The wood, the view, the grounds - plus it has all the appointments you need like a gas stove and hot shower, never even noticing the outlets and lights are solar powered. Exploring the grounds, you will find a cacao tree, lemons, oranges, pineapples, flowers like birds of paradise, and many types of palms - good thing they supplied us with a little map of the grounds! Don't forget to check out the mini lava tube and, if you have bug spray, the larger one just past the orchids along the path. At night, I suggest dinner at Kaleo's Bar & Grill before returning to enjoy the coqui frogs while reading in one of the comfy chairs.
All in all, a great place to stay. I wish the local town had a little more going on but that's fine. It was a nice, relaxing experience for my new wife and me.
We had such a perfect stay at Mahi Oli'Oli! Loved the property - gorgeous views, so private and the landscaping was lovely. We made lemonade with citrus fruits from the orchard. Loved dining on the lanai but there's great food to be had in Pahoa if you don't want to cook. Mathew the caretaker is super responsive if you need anything. Honestly wouldn't change a thing!

I enjoy cooking in our professional kitchen using herbs and food from our property. Visit Maku'u Market on Rte 130 to fill up on local organic produce, music, cooked treats, crafts, and community fun. Come play in the water and Hawaiian sun!!
