Entire property; you are the only guests. Please use caution when exploring the jungle and stay at least 10 feet from the lip of the lava tube (extinct, but the rocks are sharp)

Interaction with Guests

We live in California. You can reach us by email or phone. Our caretaker, Matt, lives across the street and can help if something goes wrong.

The Neighborhood

Mahi Oli'Oli rests at the end of a 1/4 mile private drive through virgin rainforest. Our neighborhood is zoned for 5 to 10 acre parcels therefore population density is low. Neighbors are helpful, respectful, and mostly invisible.

Getting around

no. County bus service to hilo runs from Pahoa every 2-4 (website hidden) to rent a car.

Other Things to Note

Many guest write in reviews or in our guestbook that the best days are spent entirely at Mahi Oli'Oli. They have a hard time leaving, even for a short drive to the beach or to the warm pond.

  • Mahi Oli'Oli exceeded out expectations. The house and grounds were beautiful and the view was even better. The owners are easy to work with and allow you to enjoy your stay. I would recommend this listing to anyone looking to stay on the Big Island.

  • Mahi Oli'Oli (email hidden)ay from the big resorts and all the tourist traps, you can really enjoy a tropical getaway here. The small house is beautifully built and maintained and the grounds are gorgeous. An unexpected surprise was the amazing drive through a canopy of huge trees in the last couple miles leading up to the house.

Our hosts were fantastic. Though they live in CA, there is a property manager right there just in case. We had some minor questions for each of them and both were super helpful and quick to respond. Couldn't ask for better hosts.

The location was a pleasant surprise. Pahoa (email hidden), but it packs a major punch. For our money, it beat Kona and Waimea by a lot. It has a great restaurant, a wonderful bakery/coffee shop, an amazing local produce store (Locavore-they has all kinds of different tropical fruits we couldn't find elsewhere and were super helpful) and lots more. We weren't expecting to find so much outside Kona and Hilo.

If you are looking for a romantic getaway, I highly recommend Mahi Oli'Oli.

  • Fantastic. Was one of the best places we've stayed at on any of the islands! Rained a little here and there as to be expected and the house offered lots to discover inside and out. The breeze was so nice as was the privacy. We'd definitely stay again!

Andy and Bob (and Matt) were very helpful in making sure we were taken care of despite not being there in person. Just a phone call, text or email away :)

  • This was among the most spectacular locations that I have ever spent a vacation. The beauty of the grounds, the view, and the accommodation was stunning. The solitude and quiet to be found there were most welcome, yet the drive (a breathtaking drive through the beautiful trees!) to the ocean or Pahoa was short. A vacation here is akin to a peaceful meditation, and I give it my highest recommendation.

  • Mahi Oli'Oli is a really cute - off the grid - house below the town of Pohoa - which we really loved! The house is great, it comes with a lot of detailed instructions that are super helpful - like don't be afraid to shoo the turkeys off the deck - and the property was beautiful! We saw lots of amazing wildlife and the location was super close to some great snorkeling and really cool beaches. The town of Pohoa is small, but boasts a few reasonable and delicious restaurants and a really great organic grocery store!

    Loved our stay here!

  • Great place just as the photos show.
The location is also much better than I expected, you have one of the best snorkeling of the island, hot natural pools and many cute restaurants in a 4 miles range.
Bring earplug for frogs during the night.

  • In the middle of a tropical paradise sits this unexpected jewel.
It is a charming and magical retreat that awakens your senses
to the beauty and aloha that is Hawaii.
Bob and Andy could not have been more welcoming, considerate,
and helpful. We adore it here and can't wait to return. B & J

  • If you are looking for the perfect hide away or a true lovers nest on Big Islands green Southeast cost this is definitely the place to go. Made of carefully selected wood types, this perfectly equipped house sits in a huge tropical garden, overlooking the ocean. It is definitely off the beaten track and invites you with its huge lanai to spend some days in quiet comfort. The only thing you need is a car to get there and to organize the daily supplies in the nearby markets. Reservation, the communication and the check-in procedure were smooth and professional...

  • Mahi Oli'Oli was a perfect piece of paradise for our honeymoon in Hawaii. The house and garden were gorgeous, tranquil, and well-maintained. The view was beautiful and perfect for enjoying the sunrise. We enjoyed our mornings spent eating breakfast on the lanai with the geckos. Great stars and frog chorus in the evenings as well. We would happily stay again and highly recommend Mahi Oil'Oli. Robert was super friendly and provided a ton of useful links and suggestions. We were happy with the location as a good base for exploring all parts of the island, particularly volcano national park. The town of Pahoa was cute and has many food options, Longs drugs, markets, banks, and a new bakery.

  • What an amazing place to stay! My wife and I stayed at Mahi Oli'Oli for our honeymoon and could not have loved it any more than we did. The location is very secluded and surrounded by nature. The cottage looks great, and the new star deck was an added bonus that we were not expecting. (email hidden) to stay if you're trying to get away from the tourist/commercial part of Hawaii.
