Exquisite Private Beach with just 3 BASIC bungalows- with electric plugs and lighting. About 1 km from the beautiful, happy, friendly Melanesian village of Emua. No sound to disturb you but the gentle lapping of the lagoon in this sheltered cove. Each evening the sunset glows lighting the 3 islands which are a very short distance away. The local style thatched bungalows are set in a beautiful flowery tropical garden.

The space
There are three bungalows-
COCONUT CABIN (Nanui Farea) - this is the best and the one we recommend. ABSOLUTE BEACHFRONT. It was built by a "Friend of Coral Sands"- Mattie. We think it is the height of Robinson Crusoe luxury- It is in the Western Style with aluminum window nets and bug proof doors and walls, tiled floor. There are louver windows. It has a covered veranda with chairs and table and a NEW PAVILION with a HAMMOCK and a day mattress to put on the floor for relaxing and OUTDOOR CURTAINS for sun protection while lazing in the hammock. There is a SINK just outside for handy water supply. There is a bedside light and plug points. The bed has a spacious fancy mosquito net and usually has nice linen in a pleasing color scheme. There is an electric kettle and coffee/TEA equipment. You may use the kettle to boil water for drinking if you wish. The bathroom is shared with the other beachfront bungalow.

MANGO BUNGALOW (Nuapu Farea) - $ less cost than Coconut Cabin. ABSOLUTE BEACHFRONT. This is a coral rock, forest timber and steel roofed local hut, tiled floor- it is very basic. It has a bedside light and plug points. The bed has a spacious fancy mosquito net and usually has nice linen in a pleasing color scheme. There is an electric kettle and coffee/tea equipment. You may use the kettle to boil water for drinking if you wish. It has a covered veranda with table and chairs, and shares the bathroom with Coconut. No pavilion, no netted veranda, no sink or running water. It is a smaller cabin.

POPO PALACE (Maplo Farea) - $ less cost than Coconut Cabin. On the top of the hill, directly behind the other cabins- STUNNING BEACH VIEW. it has a steep stair climb to reach it. It is built in the local style with coral rocks, coconut mat roof, wooden walls. Has Steel window nets. It is very spacious and it has an en suite semi open air toilet. The shower is the communal one with the other bungalows. (Not suitable for older people.) It has a small covered veranda. It has no sink but the basin in the bathroom provides some cold running water, no netted veranda, no pavilion (Least recommended)

MIDDAY HOT SOLAR SHOWER!! A new addition to our comfort is the OUTDOOR BEACH SHOWER in the most charming grotto. The indoor shower is cold water only, but it is so hot in tropical Vanuatu that I think hot water is not something that I have ever missed.
Your delightful hosts and owners of Coral Sands (locally known as-" Vatupau Beach Bungalows"), are Emua villagers Kenneth and Anita. Kenneth is highly respected both in Emua Village and as an adviser to the government on Environmental Affairs. Annita is an integral member of the Mothers of Emua. They maintain village meal sharing schemes and raise money for local charities with the other nearby villages. Emua is a model village highlighting cooperative living at it's best.
Anita will cook simple but delicious meals for you, if you wish.
Your hosts do not sleep at the resort, and you may request privacy, as you desire.(URL HIDDEN)

Locally owned Orovy Restaurant is currently closed, but when open again is recommended and is in Emua Village. ) They are open every day and are also a great place for sun downers.
Emua- our village has a nightly MOTHER"S SUPPER SALE with items at 25c each. BYO plate and eat local dishes for $1.50 to $3 per person. Not open on Sunday. on the main road across from the shop and bank or in the village square near the church..

PELE ISLAND - Kenneth will arrange a very reasonably priced day trip in a local fishing boat to see the lagoon islands and to snorkel. Truly the color of the lagoon must be seen to be believed! We even saw a dugong (sea cow) and sea horses. The reefs are so unspoiled. The coral exquisite. (Ask for boatman and Pele Island bungalow owner-Charley)

Kenneth and Anita will treat guests with a LAP LAP feast cooked in a traditional pit. I think this is an island experience to remember. (Extra cost.)

BYO bottled water or boil your won with your kettle- it is mountain spring water, but please don't take the risk.
Your own transport is desirable for a truly good visit- We have a friend - Franko- whose number I can give you, if you need a car.
A minibus can bring you from airport or town to Emua Village. But it is a long drive with plenty of stops!!
There is a shop in Emua that has island basics, and sometimes great freshly baked bread! Next door village- SAMA has great home baked bread and you can arrange for them to phone you when the fresh mother baked bread comes in (irregularly)

$10 per day extra fee payable to Kenneth, if you need an extra bed, instead of just the double bed.
Are you slightly afraid of being alone at the beach at night? Single ladies may request Kenneth and Anita to sleep in the next bungalow to keep them company- that is incredibly sweet I think!!

Who are Laura and John then? We are regular guests at Coral Sands. Every year we spend a long holiday there. We love it so much, so it is our greatest pleasure to recommend it to people who enjoy a truly authentic local island experience. Kenneth does not have internet, so we text booking information to him from our home in Auckland NZ.
WARNING this is a basic place, live the way the tribal people live, so don't expect Western Style amenities. Tuck that Mosquito net tight around you at night and BRING Deet personal REPELLENT AND a BARRIER BUG SPRAY to spray around the bungalow perimeter outdoors and you will love it, I promise.
Please tell Kenneth if there are ants, or other insects in the bungalows- he will deal with it, (if he has enough money to buy spray. They are poorer than any Western person can imagine) Don't be shy, just tell him. (Please use the plastic box to store your snacks.)
This is a "soft adventure" in paradise.

NEWS UPDATE FROM "Friends of Coral Sands" 2019 August
John, Laura and Shelley have been at Coral Sands for a 3 week work/ holiday. We have marveled at Kenneth, who has managed to obtain a GREAT WATER SUPPLY from the mountains behind Coral Sands and he also re-roofed Mango Cabin and replaced the bamboo walls with homemade weatherboards. John paneled inside Coconut cabin and arranged the delivery of the new roof for Coconut. Kenneth and his Custom Brother replaced the roof. At last we can all breathe easy again for the rainy season- the bungalows are safe and dry once again. THANK YOU FRIENDS OF CORAL SANDS who have contributed money to making all this happen both by coming to stay as guests and also through your generous contributions. To help a small business person to establish himself, is to help a whole village, this is not a handout, it is a helping hand.
We also had time for a lovely time exploring our favorite spots and swimming in the warm waters. Shelley and John went snorkeling and scuba dived and took thousands of underwater photos and I just loved the beach from the pleasure of my hammock sheltered from the sun by that lovely outdoor curtain in the pavilion. We all put on heaps of weight because of the French Bakery...but then that's what holidays are for.

During your stay

There is mobile phone reception. There is Wifi in certain spots.
The bank machine ATM in Emua Village does not provide money to tourists. For that Port Vila is the only place to go. We find BRED Bank has the best exchange rate.
