We have lived on Vieques for 25 years , we probably have the answer to your questions about Vieques.
Never get bored , watch the constant activity around a busy working harbor! However the action starts early and we recommend that light sleepers roll down the shutters and use the AC if they want to sleep in.
Walkers and runners will find great routes to the East thru the quiet neighborhoods of Bravos de Boston and Santa Maria. Lots of shopping and dining options nearby.
It is always best to have a rental car in Vieques but public transportation is available just steps from the cottage at the ferry dock. We can pick you up at the airport or meet you at your car rental. You can walk from the ferry dock. The house has convenient and secure off street parking.
Other Things to Note
Watch the fishermen unload their catch, get there first for the freshest lobster and fish.
Pack light, we have a washer and dryer and we provide all soaps, shampoo, conditioner. All linens, towels, Beach towels and chairs, even some boogie boards and noodles are here for your convenience.
This is a beautiful home and we expect our guests to treat it with respect and leave the home as they found it. We will , of course do normal laundry and cleaning and hope guests will do the first load of towels the morning they depart and leave them in the dryer.
No Smoking at all please.
We may consider a small dog that does not shed but in general no pets allowed. We do not rent to smokers. We do not allow the use of Bleach by guests .
Please be Green, AC is to be used ONLY when guest is in the house. .We have super efficient Units and they cool down the bedrooms in less than 5 minutes.
Most of the candles around the house are battery operated, please do not attempt to light them! LOL!
We love the local children but we do not invite them in the house. The concept of vacation rentals is foreign to them and although you may enjoy their company the next dozen renters may not, so please do not invite them into the house.
One of the joys of renting a home in the Caribbean is being able to cook at home especially local Lobster. We encourage it! However guests need to immediately clean up the lobster carcasses and double bag them and get them out of the house and into the outdoor garbage can. There is something about local lobsters And the climate that create an unbelievably bad smell in a very short time, it will permeate the house and ruin your vacation and the next guests also.
Thanks for cooperating.
Viewing the pictures again makes my heart swoon from lovely memories. The cottage exceeded our expectations, as did Helen. Beautiful and convenient location, and all the comforts like home. Any guest will walk in with awe as to how the cottage is decorated. Helen was attentive, helpful and had a fantastic personality to boot. This is a MUST stay.
We had a wonderful stay at Mermaid Cottage, the pictures are exactly what you get! The cottage was clean, beautifully decorated and well equipped. I was worried that with the fishing boats and ferry so nearby that it would be noisy and/or smelly! The fishermen are quite lively but it's actually very entertaining. There is NO smell! The ferry can be blocked out by closing the hurricane shutters and running the AC. If you are considering Vieques, definitely rent a jeep. There are many deserted beaches off the beaten path. We used Maritzas, they delivered the jeep to us and drove us back when we returned the vehicle. Even thoughthe cottage is right by the ferry, we were glad that we took the flight from San Juan, it was so quick and easy. It's also quite an adventure if you're not used to flying in small planes! We were very surprised how undeveloped Vieques is, we expected Esperanza to be very commercialized, but in relative terms it is not at all. The Island is small enough that wherever you stay you can explore it all (with a jeep). If you go, do check out the bioluminescent bay. We went with Blackbeard tours who pick you up in town (Isabel II). We recommend them because they only take small groups. Book early so that you can get the best moon phase for your paddle. Overall, we highly recommend Mermaid Cottage and would likely return if we come back to Vieques! Helen was always quick to respond to texts, her office is a short walk away and she was delightful! Thank you!
Helen and Dennis were excellent hosts and their mermaid cottage was the sweetest little spot for my husband and I to vacation on Vieques! One loc described Vieques as rustic carribean but this cottage was high end and gorgeous! We loved the deck, the morning and early afternoon breezes! Helens has fully stocked the cottage with everything you need down to shampoos, aloe, local magazines, a deck of cards, brigs water filter and all the kitchen essentials and living essentials one would need. She was available whenever we needed somthing and was super helpful in planning how to get to and from Vieques! We fell in love with this island and her cottage! I loved feeling like I was a local because her cottage is on the hillside of a neighborhood! One of my favorite beaches, la chats was right down the road and it was perfect for exploring and finding sea glass! Come check this place out if your going to vieques! Thank you Helen for sharing this beautiful home with my husband and I!!
My wife and I's stay at Helen's beautiful mermaid cottage is an experience we will never forget. Probably one of the nicest and well decorated/furnished Airbnb's we've stayed in, our Vieques home for a week was a dream come true. The home overlooks the quaint town of Isabel II, with breathtaking sunset views. It was magical to awake each morning to the sound of the ocean lapping out front and the birds chirping.
From the get go Helen communicated with us clearly and was very easy to get a hold of. Her real estate office is in close proximity to the house, so it makes obtaining the keys a breeze, and if anything should arise during the stay, she is easily available to help. We will most definitely be staying in Helen's cottage again when we return to Vieques, sooner rather than later hopefully!
We just returned from our stay at Helen's cottage and were very pleased! The cottage was equipped with everything we could have needed- from beach chairs/mats, coolers- to everything we could have needed and more for cooking meals at the house. Helen and Maria were extremely easy to get ahold of and very knowledgeable on the island. I highly recommend you reach out to them prior to making travel arrangements as they provided a lot of great info on travel to and from the island. The house itself was cozy and we felt very safe. You have a great view of the water and a very relaxing porch to enjoy!
LOVED this gorgeous waterfront cottage. Perfectly situated on the harbor. We loved sitting on the gorgeous deck, raised up high, just watching the comings and goings of the fishermen and the ferry, and best of all... the incredibly lush sunsets. Breathtaking. The cottage is so tastefully decorated down to every little detail and filled with beautiful artwork, much of it by Helen, the cottage's owner. It has a vintage feel, but in a bright, sunny, island sort of way. The place felt so secure and clean and well equipped. Everything we needed was right there. By day two it already felt like home. And Helen was always available to ask questions of. My husband and I fell in love with the place. I will be coming back in November with my sisters who will just adore it as well. This location is not to be missed. I would say bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper as the ferry docks very nearby and has a loud horn. But even that... all of it, made this a very special place to stay. It's a short walk to town and all the restaurants and shops. My husband and I did not want to leave. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous!
The cottage is everything described and more. We really loved our visit and appreciated having such a well-stocked kitchen, beach towels and equipment. Being on the harbor was lovely, and as early risers, we weren't bothered by the noise- in fact, we found it entertaining! I wouldn't change a thing!
