Perched on expansive, private terraced grounds owned by a Balinese royal family, and situated on top of a cliff along the Ayung River Gorge, the Ayung Panorama house frames phenomenal, ever-changing panoramic view across the lush Ayung River gorge towards the Ubud rice fields. The sound of birds and the river rapids is a constant presence. A river breeze blows through the house. A sunrise to wake up to! It is a unique and inspiring place! It is magical. It is mystical. It is ephemeral!

The space
Designed to be in harmony with nature. Combined handcrafted aesthetics and modern sensibility. Rich in architectural and poetic experiences to heighten your senses.

Situated on a cliff in a secluded private site by the Ayung River Gorge, this hidden gem is not like any other villa or any other house. It is a place to be to get inspirations!
A perfect getaway from city life, this private and incredibly spacious 2 bedroom bamboo house with every room facing the ever-changing Ayung River view is a paradise for nature lovers as well as creative individuals.

The house was designed to emphasize the view, to create an architecture filled with rich in poetic experiences for the users and at once in harmony with the site and the surrounding nature. It is built specifically to the site condition, to fit into the terraced grounds, with sustainable bamboo construction, which is environmentally and earthquake friendly. This large, incredibly spacious, 190 sq.m. (approx. 2000 sq. ft.) all bamboo house with double story roof line provides plenty of rooms with plenty of natural air circulation while maintaining intimacy and privacy, with all living spaces, bedrooms and bathroom oriented to a 180 degree panorama across the Ayung River Gorge and a view of Mt. Agung far away, hence the name, Ayung Panorama.

The expansive grounds with cascading terraces are dotted with coconut, banana and durian among various other trees. It is set back from the main road with access through a volcanic rock covered driveway lined with whispering green bamboo. Minimal ground excavation only where needed (a small part of the kitchen area) and leaving all the mature trees intact is the main idea of the careful and mindful site intervention when planning and building the house, to be in harmony with nature.

As you walk through the Angkul Angkul (Balinese gate) threshold, a glimpse of the distant view and a welcoming gesture of sweeping yellow bamboo leads you to the house. The house appears to be rising from the ground, concealing and revealing the Ayung River Gorge in the background, leaving you with a journey full of mystery, surprises and anticipation of what awaits you.

Hand-constructed of locally (from Bali and Java) sourced bamboo by Balinese bamboo artisans, the spacious house is designed to take full advantage of the natural air. It provides privacy and protection, yet is open to nature with a high roof made of handwoven Alang Alang grass to provide natural ventilation (not air-conditioned) which keeps the house cooler during day time). It possesses a dual quality of being indoors and the feel of being outdoors at the same time. With the aesthetics, the richness and the essence of Balinese culture in mind, which are reflected throughout in a non-literal way, these sensibilities are paired with my interest in modernism and minimal design to focus on the view, the nature and the space - leaving out unnecessary furnishings and decoration - resulting in a house that is rich with true architectural as well as poetic experiences, as well as rich in surprises, concealments and revealments to heighten your senses. It is processional, ritual, spiritual and intimate in its essence. There is a sense of journey, of continuity, yet grounded throughout the house.

The house consists of two levels of living spaces. An expansive and serene sitting area (35 sq m) with an unforgettable, sublime panoramic view of the Ayung River Gorge is located on the main level where you enter. It is the Panorama Room, our interpretation of Balinese 'Bale Bengong' (Daydream Pavillion), where you can relax, do nothing and view the unobstructed panorama of ever changing beauty of Ayung River Gorge and the expansive sky. It is a great place to observe the view from sunrise to moonrise. You can view Mt Agung far away when the sky is clear. You can witness the view changes right before your eyes as the weather changes. It is ephemeral! On Nyepi Day, the Balinese Day of Silence and Seclusion, you want to be in this room, where - weather permits - you can gaze at the bright stars in total darkness of expansive sky! It is truly enchanting! To maximize the view, there is no railing on the upper and lower decks, which are made with reclaimed iron wood which was used for building piers in its earlier life. The open deck visually extends the space toward the gorge across the river and you will feel the sensation of being closer to it. From this sitting area, glimpses and partial views of spaces below and beyond give you a sense of connection and continuity throughout the house.

Down the suspended bamboo stairs, on a lower level, a corridor-like veranda with a view to the trees takes you to two spacious (20 sq m room each) bedrooms, with rotatable and lockable wall partitions for privacy. Each one is furnished with a large handcrafted black bamboo bed and a locally handmade mattress filled with natural, non-allergenic kapok fiber sourced from Java, which gives you good support and keeps you cool while sleeping. The bedroom wall partitions double as openings to let view, light and breeze in and to access a deck outside. Open the panels to watch sunrise from your bed and to listen to birds singing.
In the case you miss the sunrise, you will wake up to a bath of mesmerizing pattern of light filtered through these partitions. A delightful surprise to wake up to, never a dull moment.

It is an amazing experience to see morning fog rising from the river creating a painterly misty morning. In the afternoon, let the partitions open to nap with a breeze and a beautiful view. We tried our best to preserve the nature, a welcoming place for birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and fireflies.
Our decks are a fun place to watch them and the river rafters passing by with their screams!

In between the 2 bedrooms, stone steps lead you to a bathroom with volcanic stone walls and a shower with a view to the gorge across the river.

By the stairway, the spacious kitchen and dining area are filled with morning light. The space gives a sensation of being below the ground as well as on the ground at the same time. We bring outdoors in with remnant cuttings of black volcanic stone (candi/temple stone) which are used to build temples, scattered on the terraced grounds by the kitchen. The dining table stools and bench are made of weathered, very old jambu fruit tree, which didn't bear any more fruit.

An opening above the dining area provides a visual connection to the living space above. The woven mesh in the opening doubles as place to sit or lay down suspended between two spaces, giving you a sensation of being afloat in the space, while looking over the panorama of the sublime Ayung River Gorge.

The kitchen is equipped with a 2-burner stove and a freeze/refrigerator, as well as a filtration unit to provide drinking water. You won’t need to bring bottled water.
Each bedroom has a large closet. Mosquito nets are available, though we don't use them ourselves. The bathroom has a hot shower.
The house is equipped with WiFi. We try to ensure 5GB of data is available upon check-in, but heavy internet users may need to buy some additional data credit. Videos, movies, games, photo uploads will run out the wifi fast! Even though the reception is usually good, sometimes there is interruption. If that is the case, you can disconnect and try to enjoy the house and the view with your good company.

Guest access
You have the privacy of the entire house and the entire grounds.
The driveway and the whole property grounds within the fence is private and guests are advised to lock the gate for privacy and security. Even though our village is very safe, as everyone in the village know each other, occasionally non-local passers-by will try to sneak in to look at the incredible view for free if you leave the gate unlocked...

Other things to note
1. We provide guests with complimentary breakfast!

2. Because of its location at the top of a cliff, and because the deck does not have railings the house is not suitable for small children.

3. There are stairs, the house is not handicapped accessible.

4. NO parties, NO visitors other than booked guest/s.

5. As our house is open to air and surrounded by lush vegetation, you might encounter nature elements. We try our best to be environmentally friendly and refrain from using any pesticide and to let crickets, butterflies, dragonflies, caterpillars comes to our garden and it is a pleasure to see butterfly fly through the house!
We provide mosquito nets in the bedrooms and bamboo curtains in case it rains.

6. Ibu Yuda will clean the house everyday, between 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM, or at your convenience. Please let her know the day before if you prefer a different time to have the house cleaned.

7. As we are located by the Ayung River, during the day there are activities during the day like river rafting and swing. Early mornings and evenings through the night are quiet.

Location

Abiansemal, Bali, Indonesia

Location:
We are not situated within walking distance to Ubud Center but in an outskirt to the west of Ubud, across the Ayung river. To Ubud Center is approximately 30 minute drive, depending on route, mode of transportation and traffic condition on Ubud side across the river from our side.
If you are looking for convenience (meaning: no transportation) to Ubud Center, this might not be the right place for you, but you will have a memorable experience of a village life up close. Our village, Bongkasa Pertiwi, is a village of a real Balinese life community, and is home of white water rafting and in recent years to swing establishments. If you like river rafting, this is a great place to be!

Food:
Complementary Indonesian Breakfast will be served at time of your choice. Please make sure to submit your order during check-in. Thank you.
Keep in mind there is no restaurant catered to tourists in our village, only warungs catered to locals. There is an option of ordering food in from a menu provided at the house from a locally owned Warung d'Kubu. If you stay longer than one night, you are recommended to stop at a supermarket or a nearby warung Alam Pangan to get ingredients for making your own meal on your way to our house. Another option, you can have a special order dish - a traditional, truly special slow food Balinese chicken dish called Ayam Betutu, a wholechicken rubbed in Balinese herbs and spices, wrapped and slow-cooked in banana leaves - through one of our caretakers, Ibu Yuda. She has a friend who made this dish only to order 24 hours in advance. Ibu Yuda will pick it up and the dish will be brought in its cooking wrapper! Ask Ibu Yuda for details. We will try to have some images of this special dish soon.

Transportation:
Even though online transportation are banned to enter our village as well as to Ubud area in order to protect and support local drivers, it is easy to arrange a drop off OR a pick up to Ubud Center for a dinner out (IDR 100K) through Pak Wayan in advance, or rent a scooter from him in advance.

Walks:
You can experience a real Balinese village life by having a nice walk in the morning to our favorite Warung Alam Pangan for ingredients if you want to prepare a simple meal. You will pass some small warungs and see friendly locals have their morning coffee and chat with friends at the warungs. You will see Bali from a different perspective than the tourists spots - a slice of real Bali! Warung means street stall.

We are conveniently located within 5 minute walking distance to the closest rafting and swing establishments to the north and south of the street.
Our property is away from the street- on a cliff side next to the Ayung River, making it more secluded from road traffic. You would hear the sound of nature and the river. It is quiet in early morning and evening through the night. However, it is not completely out in the jungle, so you should expect some noise of village life and rafting/swing activities around the Ayung River during the day.
It is a perfect location for your white water rafting and swing activity, to walk to the river from several points along the street, or to walk around the village banjar/community on the South side and find your way to a rice field on the East side.
If you take a walk toward the river just south of our location, you could find your way to the Ayung River pedestrian wood bridge used only by locals. This bridge is visible from our decks!
If you wish to go rafting or swing, our caretaker can help you. He knows the best rafting place in our village, as not every rafting place has the same section of the Ayung river.
If you stay at our house, we will let you know a great walk towards giant sacred banyan trees.

The cliff side:
Our house is a real treat to view the Ayung River Gorge and Valley, to start your day with a sunrise, and the appearance of the shy Gunung Agung on a good day and to end your day with a moon rise, weather permitting. On rainy days, you will be presented with a beautiful painterly mystical view over the Ayung River. The everchanging view is unique of Ayung River! It is beautiful at any time of day and any type of weather. It is never the same! It is unique! It is magical! It is mystical! It is It is ephemeral!
You can witness this ephemeral beauty of the lush gorge and rice fields across the river on Ubud side, and the Ayung River down below from all of our living spaces, sleeping rooms, and even the bathroom.

The people:
The village of Bongkasa Pertiwi is very safe, and its people are very friendly. They usually are curious but most people will leave you alone. The younger ones however, and the most curious ones will greet you with their hellos and their smiles. If you happen to be at a village activities where you see crowds, you might find yourself in a position of a celebrity, asked for a pose with them specially girls for their selfies and might as well enjoy this celebrity moment! ;-) :-). If you greet people on the street and let them know you stay in the village, they will be happy and look after you. This is one of the most important reasons when we were looking for a perfect place to be, aside from the striking beauty of its scenery.

Overall, you will get a real experience on Balinese community living, seeing a real daily life and might encounter small rituals or big ceremonies. Make sure to ask our caretakers if there is any ceremony or rituals happening in the village during your stay. It is a different feeling from the touristy and crowded Ubud Center and its vicinity.

Day trip suggestion nearby:
As you would not need to go through the traffic nightmare of Ubud, it is also a good home base if you are planning to visit the Unesco Heritage designated Jatiluwih Rice Terrace and the beautiful Ulun Danu temple by the lake and Gitgit Waterfall.
Jatiluwih is approximately 1 hour drive depending on the route you take.
PuraTaman Ayun, a beautiful temple with beautiful garden in Mengwi.
Tanah Lot is approximately a 1 hour drive.
Tjampuhan Ridge Walk on Ubud side across the Ayung River is a 30 minute drive.
Tegalalang Rice Terrace is approximately a 50 minute drive. If you only plan to visit one rice terrace, I highly recommend the beautiful Jatiluwih!
The beautiful Sangeh Monkey Forest is approximately a 15 minute drive.
Tirta Arum Swimming Pool, we do not have a pool, but if you must go to one, a clean 50 m Olympic size pool, is an 11 minute-drive.
Angseri Hot Spring. This is a hot spring pool frequented by locals. If you are interested in it, Ibu Yuda is the right person to ask, as she goes there often and mentioned about private small size pools you can book.

I love art and design, nature, food and travel. Born and raised in Indonesia, educated as an architect/designer/artist in the U.S., I always feel torn between these 2 countries I call home. I feel a need to keep revisiting the country where I was born, and keep returning to Bali for its culture and art, its scenic beauty and its people. The more I visit Bali, the more I am drawn to the beauty and charm of Balinese community villages, and am fortunate to have found a perfect place for this vacation home, which I designed, where my family and I can keep returning year after year, in Bongkasa Pertiwi, across the Ayung River from Ubud. The in-between feeling between the two cultures is always reflected in anything I do, including designing this vacation home. While I love the modernity and practicality of the western culture, I am rooted in the tangibility, aesthetic and mysticality of eastern culture. The vacation home is the result of the 2 cultures come together, a hybrid, a duality.
