The Bluff, an oceanfront third-generation cottage set among the balsam firs, is the perfect tranquil place to get away from it all while exploring Acadia National Park.

The space
This cozy cottage is tucked into the balsam fir trees on a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean on Mt. Desert Island. It was built in the ‘60s by Chris’s grandparents, and it has always been a special place to us. We still use it quite a bit but want to allow others to share in its magic when we are not there.

Walk into the great room where the picture windows and open beamed ceiling create a spacious vibe. Cooking is at the center of our family, so the kitchen is well equipped: full electric range, microwave, full fridge, dishwasher, cookware, coffee maker, electric kettle, and most important lobster cooking apparatus for 4 people. An eating area fits 4 comfortably and is open to the living area. We go here to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, so there is a flat screen tv in the living area, but it is not large and there’s no cable tv. Wifi is available. Two bedrooms and the bathroom are also on the main floor.

A large deck runs the entire length of the home, and functions well for outdoor living. You will find a gas grill, outdoor chairs, and coffee table perfect for all times of the day, and especially happy hour! While sipping a drink on the deck, you can look out over the tops of the trees onto Duck Cove and the Atlantic Ocean. With a view to the southwest, it is the perfect place to take in the sunset. The lot is private and wooded.

The cabin is a naturalist's paradise. We have seen bald eagles, ospreys, eider ducks, ruddy ducks, black ducks, loons, cormorants, great blue herons, guillemots, murres, downy woodpeckers, sandpipers, plovers, porpoises, humming birds, foxes, snowshoe hare, deer, and lots of squirrels and chipmunks always running about the forested property. There are lots and lots of birds! There are also a wide variety of native plants, mosses and lichens growing on site. And you take this all in from the deck perched in the tree tops from the edge of the bluff overlooking the water.

Neighborhood highlights

We are approximately 10-15 minutes from “downtown” Southwest Harbor, also known as “the quiet side” of Mt. Desert Island. It has all the basics you will need (groceries, gas, etc.) and some special treats as well (we love Red Sky Restaurant and Thurston’s). Acadia National Park hiking is plentiful in the area, along with kayak rentals, bike rentals, swimming, sailing, fishing, rock climbing, or whatever your outdoor passion happens to be.
