Four bedrooms (2 kings, 1 queen, 1 double), 2 full bathrooms and a spa in the heart of Kilauea town. Drive to white sand beaches in minutes, or walk to restaurants, bakery, and shopping. Rural beauty on the scenic north shore.
A spacious house in a local neighborhood. Well equipped. I outfit this house like my primary home: 300+ thread count 100% cotton sheets, plenty of towels, every small appliance in the kitchen, cooking and baking equipment like I have in my kitchen at home. There is a Weber charcoal kettle BBQ, plus a little Weber Smoky Joe (portable charcoal kettle) to take to the beach. Plenty of coolers, too.
Whether it is one couple or four, you have exclusive access to the entire house and yard. There is parking in the driveway, as well as street parking. At various times of the year, the yard produces mangos, avocados, limes, lemons, lychees and papaya. There is a coconut tree, too, but we have it trimmed before the coconuts mature for safety sake.
Interaction with Guests
I live and work on the Mainland (SF Bay Area) so I will not be interacting with my guests, except by phone, text and email. However, my housekeeper, Debi O'Neil, conveniently lives two blocks away. Debi: (phone number hidden) (email hidden)
I have owned and operated this house as a vacation rental for 26 years. All of my adjacent neighbors have rented the house at some time or other for visiting family members. I am on friendly terms with all my neighbors. :-) Shops in historic stone buildings from sugar plantation days are within walking distance, as are a bakery, two restaurants and a couple mini-markets. Very small town though! You will want to do your major grocery shopping at Costco in Lihue, Safeway or Cost-U-Less in Kapa'a, or Foodland in Princeville.
You will need a rental car. It is a 40 minute drive from the Lihue Airport. However, traffic can be awful going through Kapa'a midday, so if you are catching a plane allow at least 2 hours to drop off your rental car and catch your plane.
Other Things to Note
There is a CD player with speakers that can also hook up to your ipod. If the sound of the spa coming on bothers your sleep, just shut it off. Shutting it off won't hurt anything. However, if you want to use it, you will have to wait three hours for it to warm up again. The spa has professional maintenance by Noah Carano every Thursday morning. He will come in through the front door (he has a key) unless you are here to open the lanai door for him. The rent quoted INCLUDES the 13.25% excise & transient accommodations taxes. Out clean service is included in the rental price, with a minimum of a three night stay. For a two night stay, there will be an additional charge of $150 which is entirely passed onto the housecleaner. The house will be clean upon your arrival, and cleaned after you check out, but not during your stay.
Please talk softly on the lanai after 9 pm out of consideration for the neighbors. In spite of mature, tropical foliage surrounding the property, sound travels when everyone has their windows wide open due to the warm climate.
Kilauea Coconut House was a charm to stay at with spacious living space, fully stocked kitchen and bathrooms, plenty of beach towels, a nice hottub, and great hosts! Cindy is friendly and quick in her replies which is super helpful. The 4 bedrooms suited our needs (party of 9) and we would stay here again if we return to Kauai!
We liked the house very much as it was comfortable for all 8 adults. And baby Simone had plenty of space to run around.
The kitchen was well stocked, as we cooked most meals, including some amazing dinners. It satisfied the many cooks in our group. Felt right at home with Weber barbecue .Tiki bar became DJ central for my son. The wine rack was put to good use.
We loved the very down to earth neighborhood, walking to stores, the bakery, the fish market, buying cheap avocados from a neighbors fruit stand.
Kilauea was a great find. Great location on the North Shore, minutes to many amazing beaches, which need to be discovered, and the wonderful beach town of Hanalei.
Cindy was very helpful in a couple of e mails answering many questions about the house. We felt right at home.
We'll be back, as soon as possible.
The place was great and as described. The hosts were excellent communicators and support was ready across the street if needed, which was not.
The neighborhood was great but beware, Kilauea Town is an even more expensive area of Kauai than many of the others. We'll worth it though. There is good reason why many super rich folks retire or have a vacation home here. Amazing things to do up on the North Shore of Kauai... way too many for the jam packed 2 days we were up there. We used Coconut House's snorkeling gear and experienced arguably the best snorkeling of our lives at Tunnels Beach. Visit the local Kilauea fish store for fresh fish and excellent filet mignon. We also used the BBQ & jacuzzi as well. We are now on the South Shore at a timeshare place for 7 days, after spending 2 nights/3days at Coconut House. We like our accommodations here on the South Shore, but wish it was the other way around. Too many sights/beaches that we would have liked to have explored. Next trip!
House was in immaculate order and as described. Had a great stay and would visit again. Quiet neighborhood except for the chickens but that is all over Kauai. So nice having a kitchen outfitted by someone who loves to cook. BBQ works great.

Cindy lives and works in Novato, California. Randy also lives in Novato, and works in various places in the San Francisco Bay Area We are listing our three vacation rentals together to make it easier for Cindy to manage them. Cindy has owned the north shore Kauai house and has run it as a vacation rental for 25 years. The Tahoe City cabin has been in Cindy's family for 50 years, and has just recently been made available for vacation rental. Randy bought his Ocean Cove property in October 2012.
