Paradise found, wrapped up in a sea of tropical fruit trees with things to pick and devour in every direction, This Artful Balinese inspired home feels like it's deep in the jungle even though it's just a 2 min drive to a beautiful black sand beach.

The Space

Stained glass, indian tile and tropical wood, flow between treasures from around the world. Hammocks to feel the soft breezes and hear the sweet music of swaying bamboo make it hard to venture out and explore the exquisite surroundings.

The Property can sleep 4-6, has a full kitchen, soaking tub, separate shower and lots of outside deck space.

The property is home to some adorable geckos who faithfully gobble up mosquitoes that stray into the house when the door is open! Geckos are found in practically every home in Hawaii and they complete the Hawaiian experience.

Guests are encouraged to wander through the gardens enjoying all their delectable organic goodness.

Guest Access

Guest will have complete access to the private top floor unit with 2 lanais as well as shared access to the gardens. We have wonderful caretakers there to serve you living on the ground floor unit.

Interaction with Guests

We are available 24/7 for local recommendations or any other needs to make your stay thoroughly enjoyable!

The Neighborhood

Within a short drive north along the Red Road are numerous attractions: Kalani Retreat Center, Geothermally heated swimming and snorkeling areas including Ahalanui Park and the Kapoho Tide Pools; and the beautiful Oceanside McKenzie State Park. Within a 5 minute drive south on the Red Road is Kalapana, where the road ends at the most recent lava flows. There you will find the Kalapana Café and Uncle Robert’s Kava Bar, as well as guided lava walks and a trail across the lava fields to the new beach.

Getting around

Recommend a car to fully utilize all that this amazing area has to offer. Tours available upon request.

  • We had an amazing time at this gorgeous home and didn't want to leave! Although there was a bit of confusion at our arrival (our caretaker wasn't informed that we would be arriving that evening, and was expecting guests the following night), everything was quickly sorted and did not cause us issue at all. The home was immaculately clean, incredibly beautiful, and nestled in a peaceful neighborhood. We brought my in-laws down to give them a taste of the Puna district, and our experience here made it the highlight of their trip so far! As is mentioned, bring food with unless you plan on traveling into Pahoa. We came equipped with food and wine- had a brilliant celebration! Would highly recommend staying here to anyone!

  • Perfect house for us, the kids loved the geckos, I mean the teens.
We loved all the fruit trees. Carla was so sweet to bring us plantains, fried those up with french toast.
The house was clean and lots of windows, we counted 31 that open for all the coastal breezes, not to mentioned the sliding doors.
Perfect week on the Hilo side

  • What a generous place! I fell in love with this house at first sight, and for the first time in our large travels, I thought: we could live here. Everything about this place is magical, and there is something really different about the people, the nature, the atmosphere. And the house: the picture doesn’t really show how well designed it is, how generous are the details, the way light penetrate the space… We stayed a month there, because I needed to work and because we wanted to take a pause in our travels. It was perfect for concentration, inspiration, and "break-style" happiness. It was such a pleasure to cook in the kitchen, relax in the deck, pick some fruits in the garden, listen to the palette of sounds: each hour is different, especially when frogs (coqui) arrive in the evening and different kinds of birds in the morning.
Thank you for sharing with us this piece of paradise!
We felt at the same time at home, in an other planet, and in a true Hawaiian place fill with the artistic spirit of the people who made the house.

I am so happy that we choose Justin's place to stay in the Big Island because of the house itself, but also, if you are wondering if there is «something to do around» (as it is quite isolated - 15 miles from Paoha and 50 minutes from Hilo by car), because the Nature here is magnificent. Gorgeous black sand beaches, parks (Lava tree for a walk, Mac Enzie for a picnic and walk, Kapoho for snorkeling, natural heated pools, etc.), great little markets (on saturday, farmer’s market, 15 minutes walking from the house ; on wednesday, the night market at Kalapana, with food, music...1h30 walking)...
Special thanks to Carla, an amazing women (no need to spend a year with her to tell that, a few minutes are enough) : we really enjoyed your presence. She watches over you like a discreet angel.
I really hope we’ll have the opportunity to come back in the futur! Mahalo!

  • The design of this apartment is simply stunning. It's a 2 story house - the caretaker lives on the ground floor and you will rent the entire upper floor with a separate entrance. There are 2 big lanais on each side of the building and a star gazing deck that can be reached via a steep ladder from one of the lanais. The apartment is even more impressive and spacious than you can see from the pictures, we loved all the small beautiful decoration details, the huge bathroom and the well equipped kitchen. There's a nice little black sand beach very close to the apartment which we found to be the best option to go swimming on this side of the island. Highly recommended.

  • Balinese Elegance is lovely. Stay there if you can.

We stayed five weeks. The house itself has much in the way of personality while still being quite livable. The architecture is Hawaiian-Balinese fusion, with substantial pebble-stone lanais on the front (catching some sun) and back (cooling down--a great place to have a drink in the evening.) The back lanai is covered, and looks directly out onto a series of volcanic rock landings that wind up the little hill in the back, to end up at an outdoor shower and hot tub (no longer functional, unfortunately.) It's a good place to go during the heat of the day, when the house has become stuffy and there's a bit of wind moving through the palms, guavas, and noni trees. The front lanai curves out over the front garden like the wide, wide bow of a ship, making you feel as if you're floating into the pine, palm, lemon, papaya, etc. trees out there. (It also helps create privacy from caretaker's apartment below.)

The house is located in a great part of the Punta coast. You're a ten minute walk down to the Kehena black sand beach, one of the few real beaches on this side of the island. You're a ten minute drive to Kalapana, where you can see that part of the island come together every Wednesday night at Uncle Robert's Awa Bar to eat and drink and listen to live music. We went every week while were there. You're a five minute drive to the Saturday morning market at S.P.A.C.E., where you can get fresh fruit and lots of other things. You're twenty minutes to Pahoa, forty minutes to Volcano, and fifty minutes to Hilo.

Carla the Caretaker was a pleasure, and she was great with our boys, showing them what fruit to pick and where to find the frogs, etc. I only dealt with Justin via email; he was prompt and courteous and generally fabulous to work with. We will keep an eye on his other rentals in case we end up there, and we'll be back to this one.

  • Couldn't have asked for a better rental for our time on the Big Island. The whole space is well designed and furnished with lots of great little touches throughout (I think we were all left a little speechless when we first saw it in person). Totally one of a kind, and a complete steal for the price. The garden is great as well. Only downside is It's a bit of a drive to things like Volcano and Kona area beaches, but we knew that going in. Also be sure to spend a little time with the cats that live on the property, as they seem to have picked up some of the Aloha spirit and are some of the friendliest cats I've ever seen!

  • The house is beautiful and the location was great for what we were planning. The communication from our host was prompt and clear throughout the entire process. Directions to and description of the property were true to reality. The caretakers who live downstairs were discreet and super helpful (we had some problems on this trip - not related to the rental - and they helped us tremendously). Would definitely stay here again!

  • The Balinese home by the beach was truly elegant and more exquisite than my partner and I could have hoped for or expected. The bold colors and a host of amazing details made the interior of this spacious house an artist's dream to enjoy. The lanai areas were also large and well outfitted with comfortable furniture. The kitchen was huge and well stocked for use as well. I can't say enough good things about our experience. From my initial contact with Justin to our parting interactions with the property caretaker Verushka, the warmth and friendliness of our hosts was very evident. They clearly cared to make sure that we were happy and our needs were met. Bravo Justin and team! I'm glad you would welcome us back because this was truly one of the best places, if not THE best place I have stayed on the island. And as the owner of a beautiful guest cottage on the West side of the island, I feel I can speak with some confidence. Mahalo.
