The "Treehouse", is a studio unit above our garage. We are only 2 houses (about 800 ft) from a cool little hidden beach. In a rural suburban neighborhood, close to hiking and surfing, located 1 hour west of Waikiki, Honolulu, North Shore.
We call it the Treehouse, but its actually a second floor studio apt over our carport, with views of gardens and the tops of tropical palms. You can walk to a hidden local beach only 2 houses away, where Hawaiian green sea turtles rest on the sand. Save money by cooking your own meals instead of going out every night!
This "Ohana" apt (a unit attached to someone's private home, and does not contain a full kitchen, meant for temporary family guests) is located in West Oahu, in Makaha, close to Makaha surfing beach, Makaha Golf Resort, and 15 minutes away frm the Disney and KoOlina Resorts. It is one hour away from Honolulu and Waikiki and the hustle and bustle of the city, whle still only 20 minutes drive to shopping in Kapolei. There is a quaint oceanfront restaurant with entertainment on the weekends just 5 minutes down the road, and our side of the island is known for less crowded beaches, teeming with ocean life, and some cool rural hiking trails.
Our Treehouse is a large studio room (over 400 square ft ) with an outdoor lanai, romantic pillowtop Cal King bed, kitchenette with all amenities except oven (there is a convection microwave and a double burner hotplate). WI-FI, off street parking, separate entrance, full tile bath, basic cable, DVD/VCR (some DVDs/ VCR tapes are provided, as well as some novels to read on the beach), A/C, coin op laundry on premises, close to larger surfing beaches. Bus stop close by but a car is recommended.
We provide beach towels, snorkel equipment, boogieboards, coolers, beach umbrella, use of our BBQ, single and double person kayaks w/ temporary foam roof rack to put on your rental car, 2 bicycles, tour books and maps ... what more can you ask for at this price?
Explore Oahu the more affordable way, or just hide out here for a romantic retreat!
Guests have access to all the beach items including kayak, bikes, snorkel equipment, coolers, beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. Also access to coin -op washer and dryer, charcoal grill, and 1 covered parking space. Extra storage room is available if they need to store something large or have excessive baggage. They also have their own private access door to their unit, but it does share an outdoor back stairway with my door ( I try not to use the back stairway when guests are present so they feel more private).
Interaction with Guests
I try to give the guests complete privacy and only come up to visit their space if they text or call me with a problem. I will be there to greet the guests and show them around, and if I cannot be there on arrival I will come up and greet them later. If it rains, guests have to take the chair cushions in off the lanai and sweep water off after the rain. I don't want them to feel uncomfortable thinking I might come up there and peek in their windows! If there is a special event going on in the area, I will stop up and invite them or at least make them aware of it.
I like that you can walk to the beach, that my street is a circle so its pleasant to ride bikes on, and there are many colorful characters in my neighborhood and many pets. I also like that it is far from commercial activity.
There is a bus stop just a few hundreds yards away, but the bus does take a long time to get places. It is not too far for grocery shopping, but it takes about 1 1/2 hours to get to the main city , and if you want to take the bus to and from the airport, it requires an exchange to get onto another bus, and they only allow one small bag per person.
Other Things to Note
Oahu ordinances do not allow meals to be served to guests, and do not allow a full kitchen for ohana units. There is a full kitchenette for you to cook your own meals but not a full stove/oven (double burner hot plate instead of a stove top). Long term tenants (over 1 month) are expected to purchase their own toilet paper and incidentals beyond the arrival courtesy stocking. Coin-Op laundry in carport, requires 1.00 in quarters to wash or dry( the laundry detergent items are free for use) . No daily maid service.
Must like friendly (outdoor) dog and cat (pets are not permitted inside the unit), please close driveway gate, quiet hrs 10pm-8am, off-street carport parking for 1 car; (add'l guests/cars may park on street), A/C turned off when not in unit, please. Check in anytime after 2pm; check out at 11am.
What a lovely stay! The room is cozy, private and has all the amenities and then some. Forget your sunscreen? No problem, you've got your choice of spf. Forget to put enough on? Also no problem, as the room is even stocked with after sun lotion.
Hope was very friendly, and has great recommendations on things to do in the area. It was so great to stay a bit off the beaten path and avoid the hoards of tourists. Definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience!
Hope was right there to greet us upon arrival and show us all around the space. Hope really did think of everything that you might need to enjoy your stay.
The bed is extremely comfortable!
The picture on the website is exactly how the place looked.
There was a designated parking spot, which we learned is a huge plus in Hawaii.
For anyone who is interested in the Hawaiian sea turtles, Hope's place is truly ideal. You walk past two driveways - and you are there on the beach with the turtles. Our first afternoon on the beach, there were three turtles out sunning themselves.
Beautiful apartment, so close to the beach. Saw a turtle and monk seal on this first day!! Loved it.
Hope was very kind friendly and hospitable. The Room very nice. Well equipped with everything and we mean really everything. A very comfy kingsize bed. Two minutes to the little local beach was a scoop and every day the seaturtles came up to get a nap. Would definitely go there again.
Tage and Kate
We absolutely loved saying with Hope!! She was more than hospitable and the place was gorgeous. The beach is right down the road and we were greeted with sea turtle laying on the sand! She is happy to help with any of your need, I would book you stay asap!
This is a very well stocked studio with everything you need. And quite roomy with a nice sitting area on the lanai. We enjoyed our stay (12 nights) and Hope looked after things just fine. The bed is large and quite comfortable. A nice touch is the close access to the beach. A small beach just a couple of minutes walk away. A big beach about a 10 or 15 minute walk. Or you can drive to many others in 10 or 20 minutes. The neighborhood seemed safe and friendly. There are quite a few roosters in the area (not Hope's) and the crowing can get noisy at night sometimes. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper (we only used them a couple of times). The highway from the Honolulu area can get pretty busy and it's best to avoid driving it between 3 and 7 pm. But Oahu is pretty busy almost anywhere.
All in all, it's a great place to stay and we would certainly consider it again if we ever are fortunate enough to return to this part of Oahu.
Thanks for the review, and thank you for the suggestions, I did not take them as criticisms.... items do wear out, and I have no way of knowing unless someone tells me! I appreciate it. I'm surprised that there were items missing from the unit ( such as measuring cups and spoons, I did have some in there) and earplugs ( I supply fresh ones for all the guests because of the neighborhood farm animals--- but I guess we forgot to replace them, since your review suggests people bring their own). The frayed hotplate cord is especially important, I am so glad you noticed it!! And I did notice that strange amount of ash all over the window area near the AC after you left... I've never seen that before, I guess someone had a BBQ and the wind caught it....?
We enjoyed our stay in this flat, which was clean, quiet(the roosters were no problem for us)and really well equipped ,one of the best I've ever seen in airbnb.the bed is a king size ,which is uncommon to find, with soft sheets and really comfortable.the kitchen is big and you can properly cook, the fridge is huge.Hope was friendly and welcomed us well .the only thing we felt uncomfortable with was sitting in the veranda because the pillows of the couch smelled and were full of dog's hair.we reccomend this budget romantic place in the beautiful east coast of Oahu ,which is close to makhana beach and not that far from ko olina.
Born in the New York, USA area, I have lived on Oahu almost 20 years, 7 of them in the Makaha area. I love the water and hiking and will be able to help you find secret beaches, hiking trails, and the coolest snorkeling spots.
