About This Listing
The "Treehouse", is a studio unit above our garage. We are only 2 houses (about 800 ft) from a cool little hidden beach. In a rural suburban neighborhood, close to hiking and surfing, located 1 hour west of Waikiki, Honolulu, North Shore.
We call it the Treehouse, but its actually a second floor studio apt over our carport, with views of gardens and the tops of tropical palms. You can walk to a hidden local beach only 2 houses away, where Hawaiian green sea turtles rest on the sand. Save money by cooking your own meals instead of going out every night!
This "Ohana" apt (a unit attached to someone's private home, and does not contain a full kitchen, meant for temporary family guests) is located in West Oahu, in Makaha, close to Makaha surfing beach, Makaha Golf Resort, and 15 minutes away frm the Disney and KoOlina Resorts. It is one hour away from Honolulu and Waikiki and the hustle and bustle of the city, whle still only 20 minutes drive to shopping in Kapolei. There is a quaint oceanfront restaurant with entertainment on the weekends just 5 minutes down the road, and our side of the island is known for less crowded beaches, teeming with ocean life, and some cool rural hiking trails.
Our Treehouse is a large studio room (over 400 square ft ) with an outdoor lanai, romantic pillowtop Cal King bed, kitchenette with all amenities except oven (there is a convection microwave and a double burner hotplate). WI-FI, off street parking, separate entrance, full tile bath, basic cable, DVD/VCR (some DVDs/ VCR tapes are provided, as well as some novels to read on the beach), A/C, coin op laundry on premises, close to larger surfing beaches. Bus stop close by but a car is recommended.
We provide beach towels, snorkel equipment, boogieboards, coolers, beach umbrella, use of our BBQ, single and double person kayaks w/ temporary foam roof rack to put on your rental car, 2 bicycles, tour books and maps ... what more can you ask for at this price?
Explore Oahu the more affordable way, or just hide out here for a romantic retreat!
Guests have access to all the beach items including kayak, bikes, snorkel equipment, coolers, beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. Also access to coin -op washer and dryer, charcoal grill, and 1 covered parking space. Extra storage room is available if they need to store something large or have excessive baggage. They also have their own private access door to their unit, but it does share an outdoor back stairway with my door ( I try not to use the back stairway when guests are present so they feel more private).
Interaction with Guests
I try to give the guests complete privacy and only come up to visit their space if they text or call me with a problem. I will be there to greet the guests and show them around, and if I cannot be there on arrival I will come up and greet them later. If it rains, guests have to take the chair cushions in off the lanai and sweep water off after the rain. I don't want them to feel uncomfortable thinking I might come up there and peek in their windows! If there is a special event going on in the area, I will stop up and invite them or at least make them aware of it.
I like that you can walk to the beach, that my street is a circle so its pleasant to ride bikes on, and there are many colorful characters in my neighborhood and many pets. I also like that it is far from commercial activity.
There is a bus stop just a few hundreds yards away, but the bus does take a long time to get places. It is not too far for grocery shopping, but it takes about 1 1/2 hours to get to the main city , and if you want to take the bus to and from the airport, it requires an exchange to get onto another bus, and they only allow one small bag per person.
Other Things to Note
Oahu ordinances do not allow meals to be served to guests, and do not allow a full kitchen for ohana units. There is a full kitchenette for you to cook your own meals but not a full stove/oven (double burner hot plate instead of a stove top). Long term tenants (over 1 month) are expected to purchase their own toilet paper and incidentals beyond the arrival courtesy stocking. Coin-Op laundry in carport, requires 1.00 in quarters to wash or dry( the laundry detergent items are free for use) . No daily maid service.
Must like friendly (outdoor) dog and cat (pets are not permitted inside the unit), please close driveway gate, quiet hrs 10pm-8am, off-street carport parking for 1 car; (add'l guests/cars may park on street), A/C turned off when not in unit, please. Check in anytime after 2pm; check out at 11am.
Hope did an excellent job in making me feel welcomed and was able to answer my questions and handle any of my concerns.
First off, I was really impressed with the supplies in the bathroom and the options for literature about Hawaii in the space. Her dog and cat are really friendly. The bed is really comfy. I didn't really have any trouble finding the place either.
Since this is my first time in Hawaii, I didn't spend as much time on the West side of Oahu as I thought I would. I do know, for the next time I am out here, I definitely would love to stay here and spend more time on the beaches/hiking on this side of the island.
Thanks for the nice review, Worlynn! Wish I could have had some time to show you the hidden spots around here! Maybe when your GF has finished her dissertation. Sorry to hear after-the-fact that you couldn't access the WIFI, everyone else in the house was able to use it, we could have experimented a bit to see why.
Hope is amazingly helpful. She helped us figure out what local sites to see and helped us plan our three days there. The place is spacious and comfortable. Overall it was a great experience.
The apartment was excellent and was exactly as described! We were just a short walk from the beach, where if there weren't sea turtles lying on the beach, they could be seen in the water. The apartment had everything we needed, we ended up grilling most nights. There was also plenty of beach things for us to use, chairs, flippers, etc. Hope was very welcoming and gave us all the information we needed, and we really had the place to ourselves after that. One thing I'd mention, and Hope was upfront about this before accepting our booking, you'll really need to rent a car when here. There are busses that come this far, but to have the freedom to see all the sites nearby, I wouldn't recommend staying in Waianae at all without a car. Beautiful apartment, we really enjoyed our stay!
It was clean and was just as the listing described. The host wasn't able to be present upon our arrival but gave us instructions on how to enter the unit. The AC worked fine. If you're hoping for a "tropical" environment, it would be best to stay on the North Shore. Mahaka Beach was nice and the tide pools at the end of the highway (Ka'ena Point) were fun to explore. It felt really far from Honolulu and all the main Oahu attractions, especially in high traffic commute periods, which may be what some are looking for. Host was gracious and took great care to keep the "treehouse" well-stocked with Hawaii travel books, regular toiletries, beach stuff, etc. Covered parking was nice. Again, unit was exactly as the listing described - just not what I expected as this was my first time in Hawaii. The treehouse itself was great, but I wouldn't stay on the west shore again.
Aloha Melissa and thanks for the review! yup, 2-3 days are really all you need to see the West side of Oahu. When people ask for a week out here, I always recommend to people to break their trip into 3 segments: North Shore, Waikiki, and Waianae coast , each for 2 or 3 days. They can see more on the island with a lot less driving. Oahu is a LOT bigger than people think it is!!
Hope was there to greet us, everything was great and very clean, all you have to pack is clothes, Hope provides everything. She showed us the path to the beach where the sea turtles were, we saw 5 one evening. We especially liked being able to use the ice chest. The king bed is very comfy and the washer/dryer was a plus. You can leave the windows open at night due to the cool breeze. We will stay there again if we ever get to go back to Hawaii! Thanks Hope
