Ventura's location between the Los Padres National Forest and the Pacific Ocean, coupled with two of California's longest open flowing rivers, make for an ideal escape for outdoor adventure. Just off shore, the Channel Islands National Park is an all-natural playground for those interested in whale watching, hiking, camping, diving, kayaking through sea caves and walks led by naturalists.
The Ventura coast possesses its own vast stretches of beautiful, uncrowded beaches; popular surf spots; harbor cruises; a 13-mile coastal bikeway, as well as Ventura Harbor's festive shops, restaurants, family entertainment and the National Park Visitors Center. Meanwhile, Ventura's Historic Downtown Cultural District offers a mix of pleasing architectural styles in which you will find distinctive inns, boutiques, restaurants and antique shops.
Downtown also features an array of galleries, artisans and stage performances offering big talent in intimate settings. Historical highlights include Mission San Buenaventura, the Albinger Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Ventura County. City walking tours including the ever-popular "ghost hunts" are a popular activity. Discover a relaxed, eclectic and artsy side of California that you will not find elsewhere.
Ojai (OH-hi) is situated in a small, east-west valley about 15 miles from Ventura and the Pacific coast, surrounded by citrus groves, oak trees and the protective Santa Ynez Mountains. The town settles down into its valley like eggs into a bird's nest, giving credence to some people's contention that its name means "nest" in the Chumash Indian language.
If you've only got a day, take a leisurely stroll among the arcade shops and along the streets branching off from Ojai Avenue (which is also Hwy 150). You'll find art galleries, boutique clothing shops, several places to eat and the tasting room for Casa Barranca Winery, the first certified organic winery on the Central Coast.
For a little more active day, go horseback riding with Western Trail Rides or rent a bicycle from Bicycles of Ojai (108 Canada Street) and pedal the 16-mile paved path that runs from Ojai's Libbey Park all the way to the beach in Ventura.
You'll likely be done with Ojai after spending a full day there, so after breakfast on your second day, you'll have time for a leisurely drive home. Highway 150 going northwest toward Santa Barbara is a very scenic drive around Lake Casitas, through pastoral countryside and past avocado groves. From there, you could continue north on Hwy 192, skirting the eastern edge of Santa Barbara, then follow Hwy 154 north through the Santa Ynez Valley, connecting with US 101.
Take Hwy 150 the other direction and you'll climb to some scenic vista points overlooking the valley to Santa Paula, where you can take Hwy 126 back toward Ventura and points south or follow 126 the other way to I-5. Hwy 33 leads through the Los Padres National Forest and toward the Central Valley.
Whatever your passion, there's always something to do in Santa Barbara, which combines big city culture with backwoods outdoor adventures, all set off by a culinary tradition that puts its name and flavors on the lips of food and wine critics across the country.
Love the outdoors? Ride horses, wind or waves! Patron of the arts? Explore our galleries and year-round arts events. Shopping? Food? Wine? Wellness? Family fun? It's all here, to explore on your own or with guided tours, served up in a laid-back elegance that's distinctively Santa Barbara.
Founded by Danish-Americans in 1911, Solvang means Sunny Fields in Danish and has plenty of old-world charm and a definite Northern European feel (no passport required). Surrounded by the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley wine country, Solvang is a special gem in the heart of Santa Barbara County and California’s Central Coast.
No visit to Solvang is complete without enjoying a Danish favorite called aebleskiver–light and airy pancake balls (pronounced aye-bell-ski-ver). The name may lead you to believe there are apple slices inside—and in many places of Denmark, that is how they are served; but in Solvang, the tradition is aebleskiver dusted with powdered sugar and served with raspberry jam. Legend has it that when Vikings were roaming up and down the coasts of Europe they used their dented horn helmets and shields to cook their favorite pancakes—which turned out round!
The Chumash Casino Resort is located some 5 miles (8.0 km) to the east of Solvang in the Santa Ynez Indian Reservation near Santa Ynez. Opened in its present form in August 2003, the casino consists of a 94,000-square-feet (8,730 m2) gaming area with slot machines and table games. A 106-room hotel and spa opened in July 2004. In 2006, the Casino estimated that there were (phone number hidden) visitors to the Casino and 34,049 guests in the hotel, nearly all of them from Southern California.
