Fearrington Village, North Carolina is a lovely rural community just South of Chapel Hill. Regionally and nationally recognized visual artists live and create in Fearrington. Nature-inspired painter and sculptor, Dr. Forrest Greenslade has his Organic Forrestry Studio and Forrest Dweller Sculpture Garden at his home there. The Artist’s Garret, just above Forrest’s studio, is a comfortable one bedroom apartment with gallery sitting room, full kitchen and bath, all decorated with Greenslade’s art. Or prices include a 3% occupancy tax from Chatham County NC.
After parking in a private space, take a few moments to enjoy some of Forrest’s sculpture in the front yard or paintings in the Greenslades home gallery. Forrest and his wife Carol-Ann will be happy to give you a personal tour. We can also arrange for you to visit other Artist Studios in the area. You will also find information on local recreation, shopping and dining in the surrounding areas in your room.
The apartment is very private, in a separate building over the studio. The sunny kitchen has new granite counters with stainless sink, refrigerator-freezer, well stocked Keurig coffee maker, microwave, toaster, range and dishwasher. We don't serve breakfast, but you can enjoy a snack or meal at Aunt Addie’s antique maple dinette table & chairs, recently decorated by local artist friend Kate Ladd.
The large gallery sitting room is filled with light, right up to the cathedral ceilings. A colorful rug that Carol-Ann dragged home from Tunisia, dresses up the newly refinished parquet wood floor. You can sit in the comfortable leather chair, and put your feet up on the matching ottoman, or use your computer via wifi at the partner’s desk, on which Forrest wrote his PhD thesis, nearly 50 years ago.
The cozy bedroom has a new queen-sized bed, with 500 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. The room is decorated with keepsakes and childhood works by daughter-artist Kathryn Greenslade Armstrong. Watch some cable TV, do some reading, and get a good night’s sleep. Just off the full bath, is a walk-in closet and library.
The apartment has central heat and air conditioning with an electronic air scrubber.
Enjoy the sculpture garden. Take a long walk on one of the community trails that adjoins the Greenslade garden, which is a National Wildlife Federation certified wildlife habitat. The garden has been featured in Carolina gardener Magazine.
The Artist’s Garret is a quick walk to local Village Center, with incredible gardens, gourmet restaurants, a first-rate independent bookstore, spa, hair salon and charming shops.

The Greenslades were perfect hosts. We had a busy schedule for our UNC class reunion so we didn't have much time to get acquainted. They met us during our evening checkin (8:30pm) and showed us the beautiful garret. They even had fresh Carolina strawberries dipped in chocolate waiting for us. We really enjoyed this quiet spot in a lovely neighborhood and would stay there again.
Place was actually bigger than expected, extremely clean, spacious and uniquely decorated with Forests original art work. Carol-Ann left all sorts of creature comforts for us having the Keurig was wonderful. The bed was so comfy and the sheets exquisitely soft. Having a separate dressing room was very nice. We wish we could have spent more time exploring their award winning garden and nature trails. Forest and Carol-Ann were very friendly and helpful yet provided privacy when needed. All in all a wonderful little gem nestled in a convenient location in pittsboro and close to chapel hill. We will definitely return next time we travel to the area
We were graciously welcomed by Forrest and his wife who took us through the apartment, which is even nicer than it appears on airbnb. She showed us through the apartment, what was available for our use, snacks in the fridge, the coffee maker, a super comfy bed, how things worked, how to do the recycling. They ask you not to change temp and other settings in the apt. because of an aircleaner, and uv light and that system seemed to help my spouse stay more comfortable without the usual hacking and coughing each morning on arising, practically a miracle. The apartment is light and airy with wonderful art work. The neighborhood has super walking trails, both flat and more natural as well as a few shops and eating places within walking distance( 1/2 mile I estimate) in the community including a well known bookstore with constant activities(but no grocery). The house has a lovely garden with sculpture and private niches and a hammock for relaxing. ( warning: N C does have ticks at some times in the year so do stay alert)
Everyone was very friendly, a lot of folks have dogs, I walked on a rainy day and someone stopped and gave me a ride home. I couldn't have found a nicer place to stay. they even left the outside lights on if they noticed we weren't back yet. They were always available for questions, if I needed another kitchen pan, anything.
Our host met us at the door but prior to that, sent us an email and kept in touch. We felt very welcomed. Lovely apartment over his studio with terrific light and very airy. We had everything we needed and just loved our two weeks. Forrest and his wife couldn't have been more cordial!
Margaret and James Harris
They were right on time and quickly showed us everything we needed to know-great hosts and we would absolutely go back-and spend more time looking at Forrest's artwork!
Forrest and his wife, Carol Ann, were wonderfully welcoming and attentive. Forrest went out of his way to stay in close communication with me leading up to our stay. I knew we were in good hands. We were in Fearrington for a wedding, and this home was in the perfect location for us to walk to/from the wedding festivities. Forrest is a talented artist with whimsical sculptures that make you smile.
About the Host, Forrest
I was that kid you could always find turning over rocks in streams, looking for what wonders nature would disclose to me. This curiosity about the natural world led me to a serious life as scientist and organizational executive. Now in retirement, I am again doing what I did in grammar school -- turning over rocks and sculpting and painting the wonders that nature discloses.
It’s more fun than any old guy deserves!
My wife of 50 years, Carol-Ann, and I are avid gardeners and nature lovers. We have created a sculpture garden at our Fearrington Village, North Carolina home. Our garden is a National Wildlife Federation certified wild life habitat. Our Artist's Garret BNB is over my painting and sculpting studio, and our home serves as a gallery of my paintings.
