About this listing
Charming apartment located in the very heart of medieval Copenhagen, complete with bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, dining area and living room.
The bedroom comes with a queen size bed, closets and a small sofa. The bathroom is complete with toilet, sink and shower. The kitchen is fully equipped and comes with all essential kitchenware to cook a proper dinner.
The living room has a comfortable sleeper sofa which is made up in case of 3 or 4 person occupancy. In the center of the apartment is a large fireplace.
The building was built in 1828 and has been listed since 1964. The apartment is on the ground floor – there are 5 steps from street level to the apartment door.
Perfect for 1 or 2 people, fine for 3, possible for 4 – although a tight fit.
The apartment is equipped with cable-TV as well as broadband Internet accessible though either Wi-Fi or cable. All necessary bed linen and towels are provided for free.
Interaction with Guests
Nobody currently lives in the apartment on a day-to-day basis – you'll have it all to yourself.
The surrounding area is very nice with narrow streets, lots a small cozy shops, restaurants and cafés. Rundetårn (Round Tower) and Christiansborg (Parliament) is less than a quarter mile away, and every major tourist attraction is less than a mile away – well almost every; The Little Mermaid is 1.3 miles away :-)
Other Things to Note
The bedroom has a queen size bed as mentioned in the description. This is provided for 1 or 2 person occupancy. In case of 3 or 4 person occupancy the sleeper sofa in the living room will be made up as either a single (3 person) or double (4 person) bed. If you travel 2 people together and need separate beds, you have to book for 3 people. We have to move furniture around to make up the sleeper sofa, and simply can't provide this service at the 2 person rate. We hope you understand :-)
Check in and check out times are flexible if no other guests are arriving/leaving on the same dates as you. If overlaps occur, check in is after 2:00pm and check out is at noon as stated to provide sufficient time for cleaning the apartment.
No cleaning fee is charged, and guests are not required to do any special cleaning. We do however ask you to keep the apartment tidy, and not to leave large amounts of dirty dishes for our poor maid to clean :-)
You're welcome to use the fireplace. Please mention at check-in though for proper guidance in opening the chimney damper as to not risk carbon monoxide poisoning.
This ground floor apartment is in a perfect location for those wishing to discover Copenhagen. We were able to walk everywhere, though next time we would do Copenhagen on bike. It is a very friendly bicycle city.
The host met us and quickly went through everything before scurrying off to his next appointment. They allowed us to leave our bags both early and late, which was extremely considerate and helpful.
The apartment is indeed full of character and attractively decorated. Sadly, we found the sofa quite uncomfortable, but unimportant as we were out and about most of the time. The make do kitchen and bathroom were sufficient for our needs, but not cleaned to our standards. The constant drip drip sounds, and the dangerous electrical wiring was a bit off putting. Indeed it could use an upgrade.
We were told the windows had been changed and warned about the potential for late night chatter from the night club on the other side of the street. This was proven true. The smoking and chatting was directly outside the window day and night was very invasive.
The place was quite dusty and superficially cleaned, with clean but tatty linens.
Copenhagen is a very expensive city. Taxis and even coffee are quite pricey. Having a location where you can bicycle, walk or take the metro and sip coffee are highly recommended.
With all this in mind, IF you are looking for a place as a good base to stay where you can enjoy your coffee in the morning and a simple meal at the table, where you can have a drink in the lounge and are not perturbed by a superficially cleaned apartment, cigarette smells and noise, then this is a great location.
We had a great time inspire of all its failings
The apartment was a very manageable walk from the train station. The host met us and assisted us with our bags. He acquainted us with the amenities and answered our questions, and off he went.
The place is very comfortable, well equipped for eating (nice basic kitchen), sleeping (very comfortable bed), relaxing (sofa for slouching and reading, tv and radio). It is very cozy, with candles available in every corner and a fireplace for cooler times. It feels like a home. The key to the unit was idiosyncratic and took us a few trials to get right. There is a bar across the street that keeps quite late hours, but the white noise from the fan in the bedroom was completely satisfactory for sleeping. I would not hesitate to book again - in fact, I have great hopes that I will have the means in the future to do so. We had a lovely stay.
Carl and Christian were both helpful and responsive. My husband and I walked to the apartment from the metro station which was approximately .5 mile away. Carl met us at the apartment upon our arrival, and provided us with the keys and the wifi password to get us started on our 4 night stay in Copenhagen. The key situation is a bit odd as it needs to be locked (deadbolt) in order for the door to remain closed, even when you are inside the apartment - very strange and in my opinion, it is really in need of a new locking mechanism, especially for emergency (fire or medical) entrance/exit. Carl also warned us about the potential for late night noise from the bars/night clubs on the other side of the narrow street, just meters away from the windows of the ground floor apartment. The good news for us was that our stay was during the work week, Monday through Friday morning only, so we were not at the apartment for the loud noises of the weekend crowds smoking and chatting outside the nightclub and bar. If you plan on staying over a Friday or Saturday night, consider yourself warned.
As far as the apartment goes... some have described it as cozy, others may see it as old and a bit cluttered. The building is old, the plumbing fixtures are old and drippy, and the old electrical wiring may be too old to handle the installed dimmers because some of the lights flickered like strobes. And as others have noted... the towels are scratchy as they are likely air-dried without fabric softener. A small exchange for the expensive luxury of a modern dryer.
Would I recommend staying here? It depends. If you are picky and seek neat and orderly hotel-type of standards... this will not be a good choice for you. If however, you are seeking a little more space than a standard hotel room with a kitchen to prepare your breakfast and/or lunch, and if you desire a good location with basic amenities, and you are willing to overlook a few oddities in exchange for a fair price... this is the place for you.
The flat looks exactly like in the pictures. It is nicely decorated with antique furniture that seems to have been collected thoroughout a lifetime. Not only is it cosy, but it is also atmospheric. Location is great, right in the heart of Copenhagen. The Round Tower, one of the main attractions in the Latin Quarter, is just around the corner. The only downside during our stay here was the disturbance caused by the renovation of the building's façade. I would have liked to know about it before choosing this otherwise lovely flat as my home in Copenhagen.
Pre-arrival Carl and Christian gave excellent advice on how to get from the airport to the flat which was most welcome. Carl greeted us personally on arrival at the flat and offered some good advice in terms of the surrounding area. The flat itself was as advertised so everything was as expected. Great little place to use as a base for seeing Copenhagen. Would definitely stay here again. Excellent value for money.
We arrived at this Copenhagen apartment at the much-appreciated and agreed-upon early arrival of 12:15, at which time we understood that we were going to be able to drop our bags while the apartment was being cleaned. (The previous renter was not out until noon that day.) The building was under construction and was completely wrapped in scaffolding and plastic, making it impossible to recognize it from the exterior pictures provided in the app. After sorting out the location and a slight mix-up in communication with Christian and Carl, we were finally able to get our bags into the apartment at 13:15, which was still earlier than the listed time. Lucky for us it was a warm day and there was a pleasant, sunny little plaza in which we could wait right behind the building. It turned out that by the time we got in, Carl had the space ready. He got us all set up and we were on our way to three days in that truly amazing city. This apartment has great potential and is a good value with its best feature being the location. It is surrounded by restaurants and, of course, the lovely little plaza right behind the building. We could easily walk to all the great city sites: the palace, the cathedral, museums, the Green Light District, the Stroget (shopping) and some of the best restaurants in the city. There are a few improvements needed in the apartment. The apartment could benefit from a good cleaning (especially the bathroom) and a few upgrades to wiring and plumbing. The wiring was a bit loose and shaky and there were not enough free outlets for all three of us to plug in our electronics - and none at all in the bedroom. The smell of sewer gas in the bathroom was worrisome and possibly dangerous, in addition to the lack of an anti-scald valve in the shower. Also the front door locking/unlocking situation is a problem that could be fatal in a fire, as it is difficult and clumsy to get the key to work. A smaller complaint is that the towels are very rough and scratchy, as were the comforter covers and pillowcases in the bedroom. We had a few other issues… The apartment is on the first floor and looks out on the street through inoperable windows, in the living room and bedroom. The first day was very warm so that contributed to the first problem we encountered: the apartment was hot and stuffy and we needed to air it out. The back windows (in the kitchen and dining area) open onto the closed-in garbage/recycling and bike storage area but they did allow for some airflow. The scaffolding and plastic that wrapped the front of the building only slightly blocked our first floor street view but didn't help muffle the construction and street noise. We happened to arrive on a national holiday (a Friday) so the club across the street went into full swing that...
About the Host, Carl Johan
Retired flight attendant turned cafe and restaurant owner. I own a handful of properties in Copenhagen and decided to rent one of them out through Airbnb. So far it's been a positive experience. I'm quite busy most of the time, and rely on my resource person Christian to take care of bookings and email-communication for me. So if a message from me is signed by Christian, you know you're talking to him.
