About This Listing
A lovely antique apartment, with historical flair and modern comforts, peace and quiet and a mediterranean garden, at walking distance from everything to see in Florence.
Please note: we have a minimum 3 nights policy, but if there are 2 nights free in between periods we will consider a 2 night booking!
We called this apartment “Alba's Garden” in honor of the aristocratic lady who lived here with her artist husband in the late 1800s.
They lived on the first floor, and this is the studio where her husband painted, and the garden she loved.
The building used to be a convent in the 16th Century. The walls are thick and guarantee peace and quiet, as well as a natural air conditioning during the summer.
The apartment has charming features, like the tall glass doors with squares of red glass, the frescoed ceilings, the old cotto floors, the original antique furniture; but it also features a new kitchen and bathroom, as well as modern appliances and comforts (dishwasher, washing machine, wifi, satellite channels).
The walled garden is full of evergreen plants, so, except for a few that lose their leaves in winter, it is lush and enjoyable most of the year: banana trees, palm trees, a lovely bitter orange tree, an oleander and many more plants and shrubs, provide a welcome respite from the busy streets of the city.
We are situated just between the station and piazza S. Maria Novella, right in front of the world-renowned Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy.
The Duomo is at walking distance, as well as all other points of interest of the beautiful city of Florence.
Sleeping arrangements: there is a large bedroom, with a queen size bed (190x160 cm); from the bedroom, two steps down there is the "sun room", where there is a pull-out sofa bed, and a shelf full of books.
From the sun room, you walk out into the garden, full of mediterranean plants, and to the left there is the garden room, where there are two single beds that can be used as an alternative to the sofa bed, but only in the summer, as the room is not connected to the heating.
The apartment is particularly romantic for honeymoons and anniversaries. Gay friendly.
Due to the many glass doors, we do not consider it suitable for very young children.
We hope the charm and historical flair of this apartment will complete your enjoyment of this marvelous Renaissance city.
The apartment is exclusively for the use of guests. It includes the garden, the garden room, and a storage room.
The basement is not to be accessed.
Interaction with Guests
We live nearby and are always available for any necessity. We enjoy meeting our guests personally and making them feel comfortable.
The location is great for sightseeing and for daytrips, as the station is very close. In a few minutes you can walk to all the attractions of Florence. There are many car rentals in the area if you want to go for a drive outside town.
We recommend a dinner at the Bistrò del Mare, on Lungarno Corsini, great location and excellent fish and seafood. If you like meat, dine at Osteria dei Centopoveri for fine fillet-steak. For a proper Florentine steak, go to the famous trattoria Sostanza in via del Porcellana. Have an informal "panino con il lesso" (boiled meats) at Nerbone in the Central Market. You will also find plenty of vegetarian dishes all around town, such as ribollita, zuppa di farro, pappa al pomodoro.
Have your "aperitivo" on the roof garden (with swimming pool) of the Minerva Hotel, right in Piazza S. Maria Novella, ot on the Baglioni Hotel terrace, both with stunning views.
The neighborhood of S.Maria Novella is rich with history. The church is probably the most beautiful monument of the renaissance with its original facade designed by Leon Battista Alberti. Palazzo Strozzi always offers exhibitions both of classical and contemporary art. The San Lorenzo market is an experience not to be missed, for everyday grocery shopping or for the fun of it. There is lots to discover in the neighborhood.
Arriving by train is the easiest way to get here, and from here there is every possible way of getting around. You can take a local bus to travel around town, a train to go anywhere, a bus for Chianti or the seaside, a shuttle to the Barberino outlet or to The Mall, a bicycle to pedal everywhere, a rental car to go to the countryside....
Unless you want to get out of town, a car will not be necessary, in fact access in the area is restricted and surveilled by cameras. So if you arrive by car make sure you go and park in one of the garages in the area. Check out the site of the Comune di Firenze (section "mobility-driving" for more information).
The best deal for parking is Parterre parking in Piazza della Libertà, 65 euro for five days, 15 minutes walk to the apartment. Or the free parking at Ponte a Greve (15 minutes tram trip to the station). But for a close parking, we usually recommend International Garage in via Palazzuolo, you can book a space and get a quote online.
Other Things to Note
PLEASE NOTE! Tourist tax, amounting to 1.5 euro per person a night, applicable to stays up to 7 consecutive nights, will be charged separately and must be paid in cash upon arrival.

Peter and Julie's apartment was as we hoped - central yet quiet. The history of it was fascinating and we appreciated the decor and Peter's paintings around the apartment. My daughter and I had 3 lovely days staying here. Our hosts were welcoming and helpful and Peter was always quick to respond to emails and questions. The only complaint was that 3 days just wasn't long enough! Sue and Rachel
No doubt that Peter and Julie do all they can to satisfy their host. What a wonderful apartment they have, well equiped, quite and could not be more central. It was also very nice to get plenty of advices from them. Hope to come back soon
We stayed for 3 Nights in that georgeous appartement. Its very nice and very clean, wonderful high ceilings and lots of room. And a lucious garden in the back. The location is perfect. I can highly recommand that apartement.
This was our second stay at Peter and Julie's 'Romantic Flat'. Our review in Oct 2012 ended with a statement that we would happily stay here again. So, in 2014, as we planned our visit to Florence, our choice of accomodation was already done - the 'Romantic Flat' was available and we looked no further!
Peter and Julie continue to be great hosts. The apartment still feels like a calm and quiet oasis in busy Florence.
Thanks again, Peter & Julie
This apartment was our first stay in beautiful, historical Florence and it was the perfect introduction to our vacation. The accommodations and hosts were just right. The lovely painted ceilings and garden provided an atmosphere for relaxation that we needed after a long, hard week at work and long travels offering a welcoming stay where we found rest and relaxation allowing us to then have the energy and motivation to explore the finest attentions and wonderful history that Florence had to offer.
