It sleeps FOUR (maybe five) and is walking distance to the most beautiful, pristine beach in the Riviera Maya.
Malu is Mayan and means Luck. Located betwen Akumal and Tulum is the darling community of Chan Chemuyil across from Xcacel Beach (turtle sanctuary). Great house with 2 bedrooms. The first bedroom has a queen bed and the second bedroom has 2 twin beds. The living room has a futon that could sleep two more. Chan Chemuyil is a quiet and charming community of mostly expats (Americans, Canadians and Europeans). There is an AC in each bedroom and in the living room.
With it's colorful rows of houses, it's an idyllic retreat after a long day doing nothing at the beach. You can sleep up to 6 people in the house, if you have a larger party, we have another house behind and there can be a shared backyard. Nice for two families or groups of friends who are looking for something off the beaten path. (Chan Chemuyil provides 24/7 Police Security)
Playa Xcacel, which also is a turtle sanctuary, is reachable by a short walk within 10 minutes from the house. Playa Xcacel is one of the only remaining protected areas where development is not allowed preserving the natural habitat of the turtle sanctuary. Crystal clear water and a white sandy beach, make Playa Xcacel perfect for snorkeling, swimming and relaxing. Pack a cooler and your snorkeling gear and you might be the only one around. It is truly heavenly.
On your way back the you can swim in two fresh water cenotes. Cenotes will transform you. A cenote is an underground lake, which was held sacred by the ancient Mayans as a place of worship, and also served as their vital source of water.
Staying at Casa Malu, you will have access to the house, and the backyard, which is 'shared' with a neighbor behind.
Interaction with Guests
We will personally welcome you, give you an introduction to the area and answer most of your questions on day one and will remain in contact for the duration of your stay.
Chan Chemuyil is a colorful collection of small homes located on their own little bubble. Close to the ocean, and close to relaxation.
Getting around is a breeze. 'Colectivos', the public transport, go by readily between 6 am and midnight. After hours, a taxi from Tulum is always an option, as it is only 15 minutes away.
Other Things to Note
There is ADDITIONAL ELECTRICITY charge that is calculated by the KW usage after your stay.
2 beach chairs and beach umbrella are available for you to use.
Livi was a gracious host and the place was great. Very relaxing, clean, conveniently located for day trips to Akumal and Tulum. we rented a car from cancun and then drove south. We swam with a couple turtles in Akumal bay, and spent two relaxing days along unbelievable beaches at local beach clubs. we were looking for something chili, it was a refreshing change from cancun were we started for a friend's wedding. Definitely recommend this Airbnb to friends visiting the area. I also suggest chatting with Livi and her husband for tips of places to visit. They really know the area and had great advice.
We felt very welcomed by Livi. She corresponded w me frequently via email prior to the trip and during the trip. She also phoned me once to make sure all was well. She was very accommodating from the minute we arrived.
The description was accurate. I did have one question in that the print out of the description of the house said a double bed but the air bnb site said queen. It was quickly clarified that it was a queen. And a very comfortable bed at that.
The hood was quiet. A nice, sleepy neighborhood. We felt very safe.
Livi was a fantastic host. She communicated with us very well before we arrived and then came and welcomed us personally. She introduced the house to us and also explained some of the attractions in the local area. During our stay she kept in touch and made sure we were comfortable. She answered any questions we had.
The house itself is great. My wife and 2 year old daughter had a very enjoyable stay. It's in a cute neighbourhood with lots of colourful mexican style houses. The aircon (in the living room and both bedrooms) was a welcome relief from the intense heat during the day. Livi provided both beach and bathroom towels for us, and a snorkel and beach umbrella. Very thoughful! The wifi was really fast. The cable tv didn't work (Livi explained that it had just stopped working when we arrived, it wasn't a problem at all for us, we didn't need it). As we were leaving, the cable repairman came to fix it.
The local area is truly magical. There's a great beach and cenote across the road (the main highway). There are cute pueblos nearby with friendly locals. Lots of cool animal life too. We saw giant turtles laying eggs and lots of baby turtles emerging from the eggs and racing to the ocean.
Although there are colectivos (local buses) that go up and down the highway, I'd highly recommend renting your own car to get around. Useful for picking up drinking water, cooking supplies etc. The little pueblo where the house is located doesn't have any shops, so you'll need to pick up supplies (Tulum has a giant supermarket).
Livi's place is an excellent base for exploring the local area. It's quiet and comfortable and has everything you need. We had a wonderful time and will happily return. Thanks Livi!
We stayed two nights and then moved to a different apartment due to cockroaches and ants.
Lorena and her boyfriend were very patient. There were only two cockroaches, but we wanted to make sure this did not impact their stay. We offered, and they agreed to move to a different unit while we had a professional come and take care of the issue.
The house has since been professionally treated and cleaned so we are confident this will no longer be an issue for future guests. If it ever is, we will make sure their stay is not impacted. Thanks again!
When we reached Casa Malu all was well prepared for the two of us, who went the first time to Mexico and used airbnb the first time, too.Towels were put out, bed was covered with sheets, air condition was on. The sparkling clean house invited us from the very beginning with its cozy charm. Since we travelled as a couple we had lots of space and used the second bedroom as dressing room. The kitchen was pretty well stocked and we used it for making breakfast or sometimes for cooking and enjoyed our meal in the lovely cool backyard.
The neighborhood was very quiet, even though the direct neighbor´s house had construction works to be done for an additional floor. The two or three building workers didn´t bother us at all as they arrived when we left the house in the morning and left when we arrived in the late afternoon. All people we met there were very friendly.
Fred himself was the most caring and thoughtful guy. What a pity we didn´t meet him in person, but the virtual communication worked perfectly. Thank you again, Fred for all your caring to make sure we were comfortable!
On last thing: The Xcaxcel beach (10 min to walk crossing the highway) is a really hidden gem! Don´t miss to visit it. It is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
We stayed 1 month in Fred's lovely and cosy house in the most beautiful village in Yukatan, it's just expat village of 4 to 5 streets, all houses are same-same-but-different, jungles across the road, 2 amazing cenotes (natural swimming pools) - one in the village - good for bath after beach, and another is one km further inside - also great!
Beach is across the Federal Highway (from house approx 15min walk), but it was no problem to cross it (we were family of 2 adults, 2 small kids and grandma) - the really unbeatable beach with lovely waves in the middle and good, flat water in the ends of laguna, and one more refreshing denote on the shore. The view is spectacular, just one building on the beach - the turtle station - and more likely you really will be only one on it. Good for surfing in right waves.
Another good option to swim is Akumal, just 10min away.
Nearby Tulum is the place of hippy-style community of Yukatan, with many decent restaurants, shops and cenotes. Ruins of course is worth to visit as well.
Fred's house is clean, not so big, but reasonable for stay 4-5 people, with patio for dining and breakfast, ac was working ok, hot water was there.
Bonus were fins, beach umbrella and boogy board for kid, we also left baby bathtub and some baby chairs - I guess soon it will be fully packed for everybody needs :)
Wifi by the way was working perfectly! TV also, however it was completely no time to watch it :)
Definetly best place if you rent car, and don't mind to drive 10-15 min to satisfy your needs instead of leaving in busy Playas (Carmen or Car), or even Tulum.
My husband and I are travelers by nature. We arrived in Mexico years ago and we fell in love with the colors, the warmth of the people and weather!
The Riviera Maya is a beautiful place that steals your breath from day one. We call ourselves lucky to live here.
