breathtaking 3 bedroom ocean view home is the perfect getaway
The house is located on a cliff overlooking the beautiful Big Sur Coast. From this space you can view whales, killer whales, dolphins, seals, otters and sharks as well as ocean going ships and some of the most beautiful sunsets you will ever encounter.
They will have access to the house and a large private front yard that overlooks the ocean.
Interaction with Guests
I interact with my guests quite a bit as the house is located off the grid and uses generator power and a natural gravity flow spring water. I need to keep in close contact with my guests while they stay for their convenience. I will need to speak on the phone to guests or the person responsible for booking at least 24 hours prior to arrival to go over specific details. If you wish to not have any phone contact, then please choose another place to rent. thank you.
It is private, quiet, peaceful, serene, breathtaking and you may encounter wildlife such as deer, foxes, bobcats, coyotes, falcons, eagles, hawks, jackrabbits and other creatures of the wild Pacific Northwest.
This is a rural area, I do believe that there is a bus that goes to the Bixby Bridge, which is located just 1.4 miles north of my house.
Other Things to Note
The house runs on generator power, which is fueled and run by myself, unless guests request to run the system themselves for added privacy. At night, the house will run on a battery system which provides lights and most of the household appliances on limited power until morning. The generator is easily started with a key chain remote. The stove is lit manually with a match or a torch. Because of gravity flow spring water, water pressure is low in this house. This house is located on a cliff in the woods of Big Sur. You may encounter bugs such as ticks, beetles, spiders, snakes, mice, rats and gophers. Although these pests are rarely found inside the house, keeping doors closed when not in use will greatly minimize the risk of these pests entering the house.
The main rule is because of generator power, all appliances cannot be turned on at the same time. If the stove is used for cooking, it must be cleaned after use. Cleaning supplies are located next to the stove for ease of cleanup. NO SMOKING inside the house. ALL cigarette butts must be picked up from outside and disposed of properly. No excess noise after 10 pm (NO OUTDOOR PARTIES AFTER 10 pm) Please be courteous to the neighbors. If these rules are violated, termination of stay will be enforced without refund. If any items in the house are missing such as linens or towels or books or DVD's, you will be charged replacement cost.
As other reviewers have pointed out, the views can't be beat! We sat on the bench overlooking the ocean, watched the sunset and felt completely fulfilled! It was incredible. Blain is a wonderful host who is attentive and helpful. He willingly refilled our firewood which was much appreciated. Don't let talk about generators and batteries scare you off, it was super easy! The house/cabin itself has a homey "80s" feel. The decor and furniture are throwback including hunter green couches. If you're looking for a spacious, clean, easy-going place in Big Sur with unparalleled views, this is the spot for you. If you're looking for something on the higher-end side of things, it isn't the place for you. Since it is more of a cabin-like experience, there are things such as low shower pressure and no central heating (though the fireplace and portable heaters Blain provides are certainly strong enough!) that make it a tad more rustic than a regular home or a hotel room. If you stay here (and I hope you do), there's a 24 hr grocery story north about 10-15 mins in Carmel, Esalan is about 40 mins south and Pfeifer Park is about 20 mins south. Cell phone coverage is extremely limited or non-existent here as it is in most of Big Sur. But the Wi-Fi does work. Come for the views...and stay for the views. ;)
The best thing about Blain's house is the location. The house sits on the edge of a cliff, making you feel you are at the edge of the world. Combined with the fireplace, this is all you need If you are interested in a calm beautiful spot to relax in.
Blain was very keen to make us feel comfortable, and returned to the house to renew supplies (fire wood, gas canisters for heaters, etc.), and to check that we are doing ok.
I wish I could stay longer than 2 nights - If you can arrange to just be there for a few days - cook, sit by the fireplace, read books and visit the near-by attractions, do it!
It was really amazing to find this place on the cliff for a night in Big Sur. The house is comfortable and warm. The yard has a great sunset view, and a lot of stars in the night. We really enjoyed it!
We had a wonderful stay at Blain's house. The pictures don't lie - the view is spectacular, and while the house is right of 1, it feels secluded and quiet. We loved lounging around near the huge windows in the house that look out directly over the ocean. The place is also much closer to Carmel than the Airbnb approximate location suggests, which is convenient if you plan on spending time around Carmel or Point Lobos.
While we had a terrific stay, I will echo what other guests have said, which is that the house is not for everyone:
1) Expect to have multiple interactions with Blain. He's a really helpful guy and cracked us up, but this place may not be for you if you like minimal interaction with the host
2) The driveway is pretty rough with lots of potholes down a steep, winding, and narrow road. Again, okay for us in my beat up car, but I wouldn't suggest driving your brand new benz, and I recommend trying to arrive in the daylight so it's easier to navigate
The house itself was more than fine, and we found the generator easy to operate.
Had a great time crashing at Blain's place! The surrounding are is beautiful, right off the PCH with an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean. The place was perfect for us. It's a cabin style place, but very large and had all the amenities we needed, wifi, great stove for cooking, and a fire place ready to go with wood! Really close to Carmel by the Sea and Big Sur for venturing out. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks Blain!
Blain has an amazing place! It is absolutely beautiful and spacious, and unique in it's off-the-grid qualities. Do note that 2/3 bedrooms actually are only separated by curtains, but the kitchen is beautiful and perfect for cooking. We had no problems using the generator and Blain made everything easy to find and use. He was a very helpful host, a little more hands-on than other AirBNB hosts I've had, but nonetheless helpful and left everything perfectly ready for us to use. It is the perfect cabin for a group or even just for a couples' getaway. Would definitely stay here again!
Our stay at Blain's house was amazing! The view of the ocean from the house is incredible and definitely worth the cost of stay at the house. Blain was very friendly and accommodating to us as a host. We felt very comfortable both in our stay and with Blain as a host! We know we definitely have a place to stay should we return to Big Sur!
