About this listing
Centrally located within 3.5 miles to the U of A, downtown, and 4th Avenue.
One mile off I-10 in a quiet neighborhood.
If you enjoy your privacy and the opportunity to meet other travelers this space might be a good fit for you. There is one other Airbnb room and a long term tenant in the main house.
This is a peaceful space focused on environmental sustainability and a love for nature. Solar hot water, rainwater collection cisterns, grey water systems connected to the outdoor shower, bath, sink, and washing machine (which water native plants and citrus trees), low water use, and recycling are some of the ways that the use of natural resources is reduced while nurturing the environment. Native plants in both the front and back yard attract local wildlife such as birds, butterflies, hummingbirds, and lizards.
This room is a great fit for people who enjoy the outdoors. The room is cozy (8ft x 12 ft) and includes a double bed, a small desk, and a small dresser. There is additional storage space in a large weatherproof bin on the patio. There is also plentiful outdoor space to enjoy including a private patio. In the backyard you have access to an outdoor shower, bath tub, and sinks that are all plumbed with hot water. These amenities are shared with the other guest room and the long term tenant in the front section of the house.
The outdoor kitchen is shared with one other guest room. It includes a gas stove, microwave, blender, dishes and cooking utensils, bins for storing dry food, toaster, coffee grinder, french press, and a table. The outdoor mini fridge is for your private use - the other guests have a mini fridge in their room. When washing dishes the strainers must be used as the water feeds directly to the orange tree and food scraps will clog the pipe.
You also have access to a shared full bathroom through the back door of the main house. You share the bathroom with one other guest room which is located directly across the hallway from the bathroom. The bathroom requires an ejector pump to function which means only human waste and toilet paper can be flushed down the toilet. Everything else must be put in the trash (floss, feminine hygiene products, condoms, paper towels, etc) or the pump will get clogged requiring a plumber and the loss of your deposit.
A private patio area was recently added behind the room. It is shaded for most of the day with some afternoon sun. Yoga mats are provided and are stored in the large brown storage bin in front of the room.
There are certain ingredients found in many conventional bath and shower products that can't be used in the outdoor shower, bath or sinks because they are harmful to the plants that the grey water system feeds. I do provide products that you can use during your stay here, but if you would like to use your own I can check them for you when you arrive or give you a list of the prohibited ingredients. You can use any products you would like in the indoor bathroom.
The long term renter in the front section of the house occasionally dog sits. She keeps the dogs in her section of the house or in a fenced area in the front yard. The dogs will not have access to any of the areas that you use.
The long term renter in the front section of the house has access to the outdoor shower, bath tub and washing machine, but will not share the indoor bathroom with you. She has her own entrance, bathroom and kitchen separate from yours. You will share driveway parking and will walk past the main house on your way to your detached room.
I am looking for quiet and peaceful people who are conscious of their carbon footprint. Please make yourselves comfortable, but don't run the AC or heater with windows open, and turn them off or to low when you are out.
This is a smoke free and TV free home. If you are watching a movie on your laptop or listening to music in the outdoor common areas or while your room windows are open, please wear head phones to ensure a quiet atmosphere for everyone.
Bus transportation is 3 blocks away. It takes 1 bus to go to 4th Ave or downtown. From downtown you can pretty much get anywhere in the city on the 2nd bus.
Guests have access to the outside shower, sink, stove, and bath tub which are shared with 2 other rooms.
You have access to an outdoor kitchen which is shared with 1 other guest room.
You also have access to the full bathroom inside the house from the back door, which is shared with the occupants of the guest room directly across from the bathroom.
The patio behind your room is for your private use.
Interaction with guests
Since I do not live on the property everything is set up for self check in, which is detailed in the itinerary once you book the room. I live 3 miles away and am available to help answer any questions before or during your stay.
Other things to note
There are several great dining options within walking distance. For inexpensive, authentic Sonoran Mexican food check out Taqueria Juanitos, El Guerro Canelo, or one of the food trucks in the area.
Monterey Court is a great option for unique shops, massages, happy hour, live music, drinks, and dinner. Monterey Court is 5 blocks away and has an excellent venue of music in their outdoor courtyard 6 nights a week. The restaurant is moderately priced with a good selection of salads, sandwiches and specials. Full bar with beer flights on Fridays from 5-7. Live music starts at 6 or 7 and goes until 10pm.
I can recommend several other great restaurants within a 5-10 minute drive.
Only human waste and toilet paper can be flushed down the toilet. The bathroom requires an ejector pump to function, which clogs more easily than regular plumbing. Everything else must be put in the trash (floss, feminine hygiene products, condoms, paper towels, etc) or the pump will get clogged requiring a plumber and the loss of your deposit.
Do not use BitTorrent or download anything illegally using the wifi connection. A previous guest used BitTorrent for an illegal download and the internet was disconnected the following day as a result. Another incident could result in permanent loss of our internet service.
Do not run AC or heater with windows open.
No loud music or movies. If watching a movie while sitting outdoors please use head phones. Also, if your windows are open and other people want to enjoy the peace and quiet of the back yard please use head phones.
The outdoor kitchen is directly outside the other rental bedroom so if you need to cook outside between the hours of 10pm and 8am please be respectful and do so as quietly as possible.
Since the kitchen is a shared space please wash dishes after every meal. Use strainers and place food debris in container. This will minimize bugs and insects.
In the outdoor shower use shampoo, conditioner and body wash provided unless your products are free from harmful ingredients to the grey water system. I have a list of prohibited ingredients you can check your products against.
Only use laundry detergent that is provided - the washing machine is connected to the grey water system and feeds the plants in the yard so only bio-compatible detergent can be used.

I came to Tucson in 2002 and immediately fell in love with the Sonoran Desert. I love to hike and explore the outdoors so let me know if you are looking for a good outdoor adventure and I will let you know what my local favorites are.
I love exploring new places, meeting locals and other travelers, and experiencing how locals live. This is the first house I owned and it has a very special place in my heart. When I travel I love finding unique places to stay that offer both privacy and an opportunity to meet other travelers. I am excited to offer my home travelers so they can experience a sustainable approach to desert living that balances communal living and privacy.
I live 3 miles away and am available to help answer any questions you have and make sure your stay is comfortable.
