About this listing
Centrally located within 3.5 miles to the U of A, downtown, and 4th Avenue.
Home is located one mile off I-10 in a quiet neighborhood.
I will be travelling from January 25th - March 28th. During that time my daughter, Kamillia, will be managing the Airbnb rentals. She owns the house and lives 3 miles away so she will be available to answer any questions and to make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable stay.
My home is a peaceful space focused on environmental sustainability and a love for nature. Solar hot water, rainwater collection cisterns, grey water systems connected to the outdoor shower, bath, sink, and washing machine (which water native plants and citrus trees), low water use, and recycling are some of the ways that I reduce the use of natural resources at my home and nurture the environment. Native plants in both the front and back yard attract local wildlife such as birds, butterflies, hummingbirds, and lizards.
The unattached room is a great fit for people who enjoy the outdoors. In the backyard you have access to an outdoor kitchen, shower, bath tub, sinks, and table. These amenities are shared with my long term renter and myself. You do not have access to an indoor kitchen.
You also have access to a shared full bathroom through the back door of the main house. You share the bathroom with one other guest room (1-2 guests) which is located directly across the hallway from the bathroom.
A private patio area was recently added behind your room. It is shaded for most of the day with some afternoon sun. Yoga mats are provided and are stored in the large brown storage bin in front of the room.
There are certain ingredients found in many conventional bath and shower products that can't be used in the outdoor shower, bath or sinks because they are harmful to the plants that the grey water system feeds. I do provide products that you can use during your stay here, but if you would like to use your own I can check them for you when you arrive or give you a list of the prohibited ingredients. You can use any products you would like in the indoor bathroom.
I am very excited about the new addition of the outside kitchen. It is so nice to cook outside, eat outside and do dishes outside. There is nice food prep area next to the mini fridge which sits on a large beautiful wood table. The mini fridge is exclusively for your use - it is not shared. When washing dishes the strainers must be used as the water feeds directly to the orange tree and food scraps will clog the pipe. There is a container for food scraps.
I am also excited about the new bathroom. This was a very special project as we had to install an ejector pump for the toilet to function. This means that only human waste and toilet paper can be put into the toilet. There is a receptacle for tampons, condoms, dental floss, etc. I provide plastic bags for such items and then they can be placed in receptacle bin. Anything like dental floss, tampax and other items will make the ejector pump quit functioning. If plumbers need to be called you will lose your deposit.
I provide thick warm robes in the winter time so you can go out to the shower, turn hot water on and wait for it be the desired temperature while staying warm in your thick robe. I shower outside all year round and even in 40 degree temperatures the shower is nice and hot. There is a solar hot water heater with a backup 'on demand' system which means we never run out of hot water. I have watched many people who were at first skeptical turn into outdoor shower lovers.
While I am travelling (January 25 - March 29) I will be renting my section of the house on Airbnb. These Airbnb guests will have access to the outdoor shower and bath tub, but will not share the indoor bathroom with you. They will have their own entrance, bathroom and kitchen separate from yours. You will share driveway parking and will walk past the main house on your way to your detached room. You will also share washing machine access with them.
I am looking for quiet and peaceful people who love dogs, nature and respect mother earth. The AC can be run between 70-75 degrees but please turn it 75-77 degrees when you are going to be away for more than 2 hours.
If you have a communal spirit but also like your privacy my home may be a good place for you to stay. I welcome all lifestyles and ethnic backgrounds. I will be dog sitting from time to time so I want dog loving people to rent here.
This is a smoke free and TV free home. We watch movies and other shows on our computers (WI FI is included). So if you are watching a movie while windows are open and other people want to enjoy the peace and quiet in the back yard, please wear head phones. Essentially this ensures a quiet atmosphere for everyone. However, this doesn't preclude the social dinner when it suits you. I am a very young 62 yrs of age woman and I enjoy good wine, good food and good friends. I also enjoy biking, hiking and ballroom dancing.
The back yard is totally private and has a wonderful soft and calming energy. The claw foot bath tub with privacy curtains tips the scale for a relaxing and stress free evening.
There is a superb courtyard with unique shops, massage therapy, excellent cuisine and live music 6 nights a week. It is 5 blocks away from my home. Music ends at 10 pm as it is located in a residential district. It is called Monterey Court.
Add $5 per night for double occupancy
No cigarette smokers please.
Check in time is after 2pm.
Bus transportation is 3 blocks away. It takes 1 bus to go to 4th Ave or downtown. From downtown you can pretty much get anywhere in the city on the 2nd bus. Current cost is $1.50 with free transfer or a $3.50 unlimited day pass.
Airbnb Policies I try to get around
They block phone numbers and websites so don't bother to try sending them. This I understand because they are the middle man collecting the money. However, it is very hard to find their own phone number so you can call to get live help. Unfortunately they even block out their own phone number when I try to spell it out for you. I do not require a photo to book with me but I know airbnb is pushing for this.
Also, the cancellation policy is strict but in reality I will refund any nights that I am able to book to someone else prior to your booked arrival date should you need to cancel.
Guests have access to the outside kitchen, outside shower, sink, stove, and bath tub which are shared with one other guest room (1-2 people). You also have access to the full bathroom inside the home from the back door, which is shared with the occupants of the guest room directly across from the bathroom.
The patio behind your room is for your private use.
Interaction with Guests
Some guests want company and some want solitude. This is the same with me depending on my mood. When we feel like a movie or dinner together we do it. I will check in on my guests to ask if everything is okay.
I love my neighborhood. Most of the homes on my block are inhabited by their original owners or their children. This makes for an automatic neighborhood watch type system. I am amazed at how peaceful the neighborhood can be even though their are so many dogs here. Seems like they all get quiet at the same time. Mostly a blue collar working class neighborhood also seems to follow the unwritten rule of lights out by 10pm. Weekends are the exception when there is occasionally a party in the neighborhood.
If you are accustomed to or are expecting a gentrified neighborhood or gated community my home is probably not the best fit for you.
Tucson is a progressive city when it comes to water conservation. There are many programs, non-profits, and city incentives focused on minimizing the use of our precious water resources. It can be surprising to people visiting from non-desert environments to see that most yards do not have grass lawns, but as locals we see this as an important aspect of water conservation. You would be surprised at how much effort homeowners put into keeping what might appear to you as a barren gravel or dirt yard tidy and weed free! Hopefully you will appreciate the years of effort and greywater use that have gone into cultivating the lush native plant landscape of my yards :)
Easy access to bus system. Located 3 to 3.5 miles from historic 4th Avenue, downtown and the U of A. Easy bicycling to these places as well. Bus is $1.50 with free transfers.
Other Things to Note
There are several great dining options within walking distance. For inexpensive, authentic Sonoran Mexican food check out Taqueria Juanitos, El Guerro Canelo, or one of the many food trucks in the area. Monterey Court is a great option for happy hour, live music, drinks, and dinner. Monterey Court is 5 blocks from my home and has an excellent venue of music in their outdoor courtyard 6 nights a week. The restaurant is moderately priced with a good selection of salads, sandwiches and specials. Full bar with beer flights on Fridays from 5-7. Live music starts at 6 or 7 and goes until 10pm as this is a residential neighborhood.
I can recommend several other great restaurants within a 5-10 minute drive.
Nothing allowed in toilet except human waste and toilet paper.
The toilet and sink are connected to an ejector pump which is buried outside. It will get clogged if anything other than human waste and toilet paper is put in it. Yes, this even means dental floss will clog it. The clog will happen within days and you will be charged your deposit if we have to hire a plumber.
Do not run AC or heater with windows open.
No loud music. If watching a movie while sitting outdoors please use head phones. Also, if your windows are open and other people want to enjoy the peace and quiet of the back yard please use head phones.
Quiet hours are 10pm - 8am. The outdoor kitchen is directly outside the other rental bedroom so if you need to cook outside during quiet hours please be respectful and do so as quietly as possible.
Wash dishes after every meal or at least put them in sink to soak. Use strainers and place food debris in container. This will minimize bugs and insects.
Use shampoo, conditioner and body wash provided unless your products are free from harmful ingredients to the grey water system. I have a list of prohibited ingredients you can check your products against.
The city of Tucson wants all garbage bagged and tied. Please place your garbage in the bin by the outdoor stove. When that is full either you or I can put it into the larger garbage bin near the front of the house.
I will provide you with clean sheets and towels once a week. There is a bag in bottom drawer for you to place your dirty linens in. Put this bag outside on the swing for me to wash.
Thank you for staying here and observing my house rules. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
