Guests have access to the kitchen and laundry facilities in the house. The Kitchen, laundry and lounge areas are shared. Wi-fi, cable tv, towels and bedding are provided. Price includes electricity, wi-fi, cable tv and cleaning.
Interaction with Guests
My Australian associate and I live in the house and we both enjoy meeting with guests and showing them around the neighbourhood and giving helpful hints on what to see and do in Hanoi. It's great to meet people and share their stories of travel and life.
There are lots of lovely restaurants, cafes and shops in the neighbourhood. It's only a short walk to Hoan Kiem Lake and many other attractions.
Taxis are cheap so getting around is easy. Many things are within walking distance.
I can arrange an airport pickup on your arrival and a transfer to airport when you leave. If you need help with your Vietnam visa I can assist.
Other Things to Note
I also have a travel office so can book tours to places such as Halong Bay, Sapa or anywhere else you may like to visit during your stay. I can also arrange bus, train or flight tickets for you if you are intending to travel to other parts of Vietnam.
No smoking in the house but there is a rooftop terrace where you can smoke if you wish.
Dong personally picked us up from the main road which made us feel very welcomed. The house itself has a very homely feel to it. Right outside the house, there is a pho shop for breakfast in the morning.
We had a great experience staying with Dong. Her apartment is well-located in a residential section of Hanoi. Dong is a very, very warm and wonderful person that is extremely enthusiastic about helping her guests out. We truly felt like friends rather than guests.
We had a wonderful time staying at Dong's! Her and Norelle were so helpful, arranging taxis to/from the airport, giving great recommendations for places to explore & eat while in Hanoi & arranging a tour for us to the Perfume Pagoda. Though we did not spend lots of time hanging out, we enjoyed chatting with everyone over our delicious pho/bun bo breakfasts or in the evenings. Dong's house is centrally located, making it very easy to walk anywhere you'd want to go in Hanoi but also tucked back from the main streets, allowing for a quiet retreat. The room itself was clean, comfortable & cool. We would absolutely love to stay here again in the future!
To make this review as unbiased as possible, it will be split into 2 parts:
1) Airbnb Hostess and Room
Dong was v welcoming when my bf and I arrived at her home. We'd arranged for an airport pick-up with her and it was seamless. He was waiting outside and was v kind. We stopped in a little alley and Dong came to get us herself and walked us to her home.
We were sat down and showered with a variety of welcome food and tea/coffee. There was so much food it was like a little welcoming feast! Dong and Narelle (hope I spelled this right) had a good conversation with us and gave us a map, highlighting key sights etc. She also loaned us a guidebook to use. Definitely a v warm and generous welcome.
As for the room, it was v spacious and was clean. It's also very cool in the room and we didn't need to use the A/C. We had the washroom to ourselves as there were no other guests staying. The one thing that was counter-intuitive about the loo is that we're not meant to throw any bits of loo roll in (Narelle explains this is due to the v old sewage system of Hanoi) and this can be inconvenient but I suppose can't be helped!
Breakfast everyday was lovely. We could pick from eggs and toast or Pho from the stall outside Dong's house. We also had fresh fruit everyday, which was brilliant.
All in all, a very nice experience having Dong and Narelle as hostesses and living in their home!
2) Dong's Travel Agency
We did not have as good an experience with Dong's travel agency, unfortunately. We'd booked the 3D2N HaLong Bay and Cat Ba Island tour on 3 star Golden Dragon Cruise. It turns out it's run by this agency called APT (look it up). The cruise was disappointing as the food on board was bad and the lodgings weren't v nice. But of course this is not Dong's fault in any way. What did leave a bad taste in the mouth, though, is when we found out that we'd paid significantly more than other passengers on the same package (USD170 vs USD135-150). We did meet a couple who'd paid USD180, but that was for a 4 star package.
We addressed Dong the moment we got back and she seemed genuinely upset and says she did nt know about the price discrepancy. She was quick to take action, calling the company and complaining and also gave us a USD10 refund. She assured us that she will negotiate better prices in future. We really appreciate these gestures, of course. All the same, I urge anyone who's thinking of booking a trip to do your research. Unfortunately for us, we didn't and ended up paying a higher price.
All in all, good experience except for the cruise bit.
Staying with Dong was an amazing experience and exactly what I needed for my first solo trip to Vietnam. She was warm, funny, and so helpful in figuring out what to do in Vietnam and helping me to arrange it. Plus she has the cutest dog. I'd recommend for anyone to stay with her, as she is also within walking distance of all sites and good food.
This was my second stay at Dong's house, and it was as great as the first visit. Both Dong and Narelle were incredibly welcoming, and I felt like a long-lost friend returning at the end of my Vietnam visit. Dong also arranged a great trip to Sapa and a ride to the airport. Both Dong and Narelle were super helpful and warm. When I got sick, Dong even gave me vitamins! I could not have asked for a better home away from home during my stay in Vietnam.
This apartment is best suited for travelers who are also using Dong and Narelle as travel agents.
They are a bilingual team and can help with the logistics of a trip to nearby destinations. I can imagine it's nice to have their assistance making sure the van pickup is smooth and having a place to leave some bags that you don't want to lug onto a boat in Halong Bay. We were a young couple with different needs, but Dong and Narelle were still friendly hosts.
One comment is that the living room is not as depicted. It's not so much a place to watch TV or have dinner, but more of a hotel lobby, a place to meet Dong and Narelle, to discuss your travels and get trip recommendations.
