The Birdhouse in Hancock, NY
Our property, home to The Birdhouse, was purchased in 2006 to house a bevy of thirty something dreams. The Bakery in Hancock, NY opened downstairs in April 2012.
Somewhere along the way The Birdhouse* was born. *So named by locals due to the lack of a roof and the feathered friends who took up residence for a long while.
Furnished with salvaged treasures and comfy beds -- The Birdhouse is a sustainable adventure.
Two guest suites, each with a full kitchen and a private bath, provide guests an unusual respite in the Catskills. PLEASE NOTE EACH SUITE IS A SEPARATE RENTAL. We will send a special offer to you if you are looking for both suites.
After an extensive 5-year renovation and restoration The Birdhouse in Hancock is happily outfitted with a geothermal heating system, energy star rated/energy efficient appliances and fixtures, non-toxic finishes, low-flow faucets, Watersense toilets, restored 100 year-old floors, original moldings, reclaimed doors, and recycled furnishings.
There are some good spots to eat. Some antiquing and a winery nearby. A smokehouse as well, reviewed by Anthony Bourdain.
And the beautiful Delaware River is a 5 minute walk.
Scenic, hiking nearby. Local food adventures. And a bakery downstairs. Please note they are closed most of the winter, but your are invited a few miles away to their other location in Starlight, PA.
Please note we are located in a small river village. There is a bus that goes to Hancock, NY. Via car: 2 1/2 hours form NYC via major highways.
Great stopover on the NYC to Toronto drive.
PLEASE NOTE: The Birdhouse has two rental suites, each charged separately.
My stay at the Birdhouse was easy to arrange, and any questions I had once I arrived were immediately answered. The apartment is quiet and peaceful. The chairs are soft and deep, and the couch is extra wide. The WiFi is excellent. There are some extraordinary hikes within a half an hour's drive.
The bath tub is really, really nice. Jackie stocks the place with locally made goat's milk soap with a great fragrance, and the hot water replenishes quickly.
A couple of times, there was noise from construction on the first floor as the Bakery was getting ready to open. This was compensated for by the occasional fragrant aroma of baked good that were to come later.
Host had excellent and clear communication throughout our stay. She also provided a list of places to go and and local shops and gossip of the area.
What an adorable apartment -- exactly as described and pictured. We stayed in the unit with the enormous bath tub (with aluminum surround) and took full advantage of it! Wish we could have stayed longer and done a little cooking. The kitchen is well stocked. The whole place was so cozy and comfortable. It felt like home.
The only disappointment -- which had nothing to do with the apartment -- was that the downstairs bakery was so seasonal, we found it was closed until April!
But Hancock was the perfect spot for a quick overnight, and Jackie was super-responsive and very helpful. Keys were left for us in the mail box. Next time, it'll be a longer stay.
My sister, our two dogs, and I had a wonderful two-month fall stay in the Nest, the 2-bedroom suite. Check-in was very flexible, which was helpful for us. We arrived to a very cute, neat apartment and plenty of towels, blankets, etc. There's a coffeemaker and the kitchen is stocked with tea, coffee, some kitchen essentials, and even complimentary alcohol :)
Since we were there for a more long-term stay, I really appreciated that it was spacious enough and had enough storage for the things we brought with us. The bird-themed suite was decorated very nicely and I appreciated having lots of plants in there. Everything is clean and renovated. The bathtub really is great and I had some very relaxing soaks in there. Now that I'm back in an urban apartment, I really miss all the light the Nest got. During our whole two-month stay, the only issues we really had were a leaky kitchen sink and the Internet, which is the Bakery's public wi-fi, going out sometimes but Jackie was so responsive and quick to address any problems and having the housekeeper, who lives in the building, nearby really helped.
The town is very small, you can probably walk across the longest part in 30 min. It is surrounded by natural beauty, we loved seeing fog over the mountains/hills from right in front of the building. We were able to get by for two months without a car, but a car would make things way easier. There's a grocery store, Rite Aid, and laundromat a few blocks away. We are people of color and Hancock is very white, which felt uncomfortable for us but there were no incidents and that's not any fault of the Birdhouse anyway. We were more focused on reading, writing, hanging out with our dogs at home, etc while we were there than going out, but we did love the Bakery downstairs. The pastries are homemade and we got addicted to the cheesecake bars and the key lime bars! All in all, a really enjoyable stay :)
Jackie called me prior to arrival to make sure I knew where everything was. The place is just as cute in person and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I would definitely stay here again.
Our experience was fantastic. Jackie was super responsive to our last minute booking and left everything set for a seamless arrival. The apartment was very clean and decorated in a cool, creative style. Bakery downstairs is spectacular.
The birdhouse is definitely one of the best places to be. Anna, the housekeeper, is readily available to help and accommodate your stay. The place is clean and tidy, and has your household essentials to make your stay feel like home. Jackie answers promptly and is a pleasure when it comes to communication. Would love to stay there again and/or recommend anyone to do so!
