About this listing
This apartment is perfectly located to enjoy the vibrant city of Nice. It’s at the center of the “vieux nice” which means “old town”. The old town is connected to the beaches (5 minute walk). Unlike other villages, this old pedestrian is not a relic for tourists. Its actually an alive maze of artisanal shops, various daily markets and fantastic restaurants (be sure to get our recommendations). All you need to do is stumble outside and drift through the streets to be entertained. During the week there is a vegetable market and a fish market. A typical summer day for me consists of slowly putting together a local organic lunch. I usually get fresh seasonal produce at the market (place Massena), then to the spice shop, wine boutique (rose is a must for hot afternoons), then to the fish merchant. The fish merchants get their catch from the Nice bay, and you can see the fishermen out at night. Other days I’ll grab some hand made pasta and stop by the antique market. Everything is walking distance in this pedestrian zone. Summer afternoons can be spent lounging around with the windows open, letting the vibrant street sounds and frequent street musician music fill the apartment. You can smell when the fresh bread is ready at the boulangerie downstairs (amazingly open 7 days a week). You can see the end of the french Alps from the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom windows. Two blocks up is a mile long stretch of small art galleries. The same street turns into a mini LGBT neighborhood at night. There are at least a dozen nightclubs walking distance, and well as hundreds of café terraces to perch and people watch. Shopping is endless and there are many bargains. There are no chain stores in the “Vieux Nice” (Gap, Bennetton etc…) which I love. If you are feeling less lazy, you can catch a bus to Monte Carlo. We complete every stay with a visit to the Cousteau’s Oceaonographic museum in Monaco, as well as the Matisse museum up the hill. Italy is 3 freeway exits away. We go have dinner near the village of Andora, on the Italian Riviera, and have the best pasta dishes for cheap. The tram way that connects to the international train station is a 2 minute walk away, as is the bus stop that links you to the other sea side villages.
We love the crowd in Nice, they are very unpretentious and colorful. If you are looking for the Jet set this is not the city for you. Try our Cannes apartment (see other listing).
Downside/upside: It is a 4 floor walk up. This means you can have an extra croissant and a great backside, but it is a hike up the stairs! We spent months here –with a baby- but its not for everyone. Also, the beaches do not have sand, but thick flat rocks. The bay is amazing to swim in, but you need sandals to tolerate the rocks. I swim out 15 minutes and look back while floating on my back in the ultra salty Mediterranean and am always awe-struck. At night the beach turns into a massive 20 something hang out and pick up spot.
As you can tell we love this apartment. Its perfect for a couple. It’s a grand adventure with a baby. It sleeps 4 (2 couples) comfortably, except there is only a half wall separating the beds. Depending on how you see it, this is a good or bad thing!
I need your arrival time and phone number within a week of your arrival. You must we willing and enjoy climbing the 4 flights of (website hidden) pets or smoking. Sleeps 4 but only a half wall separates you.
The House is centrally located and clean. Natacha has been really nice but unfortunately she lives in the USA so getting in touch with her has some timing problems.
The House is quite noisy because the center of the town is overcrowded.
I had a problem with the air conditioning but the woman that manage Natacha's flat never came to fix it so the temperature was super high ( Last floor).
I recommend it if you are looking for a super central flat and you don't care about noise, hot temperature and 4 floors without the lift.
The AC break down was unfortunate during the heat wave. We are installing a much more robust central system at the moment.
The guest manuals clearly states who to contact locally since I travel so much. Communication isn't usually a problem.
The listing also emphasizes the 4th floor and the vibrant neighborhood. I do recommend keeping these in mind when planning your visit. This is a place you go to to live like the locals and to stay up late enjoying city life and get inspired creatively and romantically. Its not a spa retreat. :)
Our flight was delayed so there was no one to meet us when we arrived, but we were able to call Natacha's friend Roxana, who came straight away to pass on the key and get us set up. The apartment was incredibly well located, as described, in a great neighbourhood in old Nice. It was lovely being so close to shops, restaurants, the market, coffee shops, etc, and we didn't mind the stairs. The downside for us was the heat - the air conditioner was not set up when we got there, and we had to dig around for one of the pieces required to get it working. It was also either missing the proper drainage component, or we just couldn't find it, but regardless, we had to manually empty the water from it every time we used it. After about 4 hours of air conditioning, it would then shut off automatically and we would have to empty it again. We were in Nice in the middle of the heat wave, so the apartment was steaming hot and the AC was a pretty crucial element. Overall, we were happy with our stay, and felt the apartment was great value for money in a perfect location - we would recommend it for someone on a budget coming to Nice, but if you're looking for something with more to offer than the basics, it would be worth spending a little more money to be totally comfortable.
We meet Natachas friend who meet us up in time for check-in who was really helpful. Perfect apartment for couples who wants to explore Nice and surroundings. close to the beach and a lot of restaurants next to the apartment. A bit noisy in the night, but i guess whole old-town are. We really liked the apartment and would definitely recommend it!
I enjoyed this little apartment. Actually, it is not as small as it seems: the bedroom and living areas are joined to make a nice long room, and the kitchen with dining table is quite large for an apartment in old town. With windows in every room, the wind makes a good breeze. The mattress is solid.
Natacha was extremely considerate and helpful. When the wifi went out for several days (the provider's fault), she even offered to reimburse me for buying a mobile hotspot (I decided to keep the hotspot, since it will be useful elsewhere in France or at other times in Nice).
The only possible alert for the next renter is that the streets are noisy outside, even at night - this is the center of Old Nice. Fortunately, the windows are double or triple glazed, which cuts the sound well. Still, I used earplugs to sleep.
The 5 flights of stairs don't bother me - I enjoy the exercise.
I hope you enjoy it as I did.
Everything was OK, the location is just perfect in oldtown, and very close to the tram station.
Natasha was not there, but Roxana was very kind and efficient to organize everything.
Cosy flat, with a lot of light, washing machine, heaters
4th floor, without lift, but for me was not problem at all
Excellent kebab just 10 mts from the door
My girlfriend and i stayed at Natacha's flat in Nice for a little over one month. Its centrally located in a perfect location you could not ask for a better place yes its a noisy neighborhood but with the windows closed you do not hear anything what else do you expect in the city center where the action is. Overall the place was great the bed was broken for the duration of our stay which was not great, things got worked out with Natacha and a new bed will be in the flat. Overall with a new bed i would totally stay and recommend this apartment in nice you will not find a larger place in the neighborhood like this STAY HERE!!!!!
We loved the apartment being right in the centre of the old town and so handy for beach/market/buses and museums. Roxana our contact in Nice was lovely and very helpful she even came to meet me a few streets away as I got a little lost. She left us a map with useful information on trains buses and places of interest which was very helpful. The highlight was waking up to the smell of fresh baked bread and croissants from the boulangerie just under neath the apartment and then a short walk to the local market where the food was such good quality and a great experience trying to figure out how much to order in my school girl french although the locals all speak very good English and so helpful. We definitely like to stay here again and already recommended to our friends and family

About the Host, Natacha
Scientist (biologist) and photographer. (website hidden) I've been coming to spend my summers in the south of France since I was a baby, and am very familiar with all the different ways to enjoy the region (as a kid, party/debauchery teenager and now a mom). I currently live most of the year in San Francisco and can appreciate glitzy glamor and grungy fun.
