About This Listing
This is a small but charming beachhouse on a rare stretch of white sand beach replete with palm trees. To the left of the house there is only almond trees, palm trees and sand. To the right the neighborhood of Blue Bayou stretches out for a few houses. Very quiet, perfect for people who love diving, snorkeling, hanging out on a private beach or bonefishing. All of these activities are accessible from the beach that the house is located on. The property includes wireless internet (a usb stick attachment so you need a usb enabled device for it to work) A/C as well as a full kitchen with coffee machine, microwave, toaster etc. It is a short walk to town but far enough away that you can relax in peace with a cold beer or cocoloco without doing much of anything. It is my real life corona commercial and I get there whenever I can but since I cannot be there all year round, you should come stay at my place for your vacation.
Respect my home as you would respect yours. Pretty easy stuff, if you smoke, please do so on the beautiful porch and not inside. :)
Electric is really expensive on this island and guests often do not turn off the AC when host is footing 100% of the bill. You will get $30 a week in prepaid electricity. If you need more, Mike will explain how to get it.
The Purple Jawfish Beach House was exactly what we were looking for on Utila! The private beach in front of the house, the kitchen which we used to cook almost every meal we ate, and the charm of this colorful and somewhat secluded house within walking distance to the center of town were some of the highlights. James was incredibly helpful and very quick to respond to my e-mails, while the property manager, Mike, was always somewhere nearby when we needed our water refills or suggestions about Utila. Although there are not many beaches on the island, we couldn't believe our luck to have a beautiful palm tree view with hammocks, adorable hummingbirds, and snorkeling (which is sometimes even better than the diving) right in our front yard! We swam with two spotted eagle rays, a barracuda, a sting ray, and saw so many tropical fish and coral- the snorkeling was breathtaking. It was also great that the hosts provide snorkeling masks and fins to borrow.
My boyfriend and I thought to rent out bicycles first so we could get back and forth to town, but during our 10 day stay we actually really enjoyed the slow 15 minute walk to the start of main street (you walk along the "public beach" area and we walked this route at least twice back and forth every day). We were happy to be a bit outside of town and away from the noise. The distance for us was just perfect and the few times we used a tuktuk taxi it cost us less than $3 total. We also loved diving with Gunter's Ecomarine Dive Center, which was conveniently the closest dive shop to the house!
James and Susana have added their bit of charm into this lovely purple home, and on the rainy days we had to endure we were so happy to have this house to relax and cook in. It felt cozy yet spacious enough to not feel confined. The covered front porch is wonderful as well, and the internet James provides is the best we have had of the three houses we stayed in during our Honduras travels (and a good internet connection is not easy to come by on these small islands). We were also pleasantly surprised by how well their shower contraption worked- something I have not seen before but it was very efficient.
I would love to stay in this house again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for the perfect beach house in Utila!
We just got home from our week stay at the Purple Jawfish House and we are very much missing it. This is a fantastic place to visit, definitely a hidden gem of beauty and amazing people from all over the world. The trip would also not of gone as smooth if it were not for James and his quick responses with everything we needed. Mike who takes care of the place when the owners can't be there was also an awesome help and a joy to be around. With the normal hiccups that happen when you visit a remote island like Utila, James and Mike were always there to answer our questions, they really know everything on the island and have great connections for anything you'd like to do while you are there. The house its self was perfect for my fiance and my self, with a view that almost looks fake. This is definitely an amazing house to stay in if you want to visit this island. James and the Purple Jawfish Beach House just contribute to the character of this island that just makes you fall in love with it.
Thanks so much!

The location was amazing and the snorkeling in front of the house is some of the best I've had in the world. I planned on diving more but the snorkeling was so great there was no need. Just before you got to the house a breeze typically picked up, which was critical. The two days without a breeze we got eaten alive by sand flies, which is to be expected in the Caribbean, I guess. It was also very hot in the house those nights. We didn't use the air conditioning (probably should have) but moved the bed under the fan, which helped some. There had been big storms previous to our arrival so the beach was littered with garbage. Mike was quick to get a crew to clean it up though. We didn't use bikes and enjoyed the walk to town. It's about 15-20 minutes much of it along a pretty stretch of beach. Overall, it was a really great vacation.
This little oasis is perfect and exactly what we wanted. The snorkeling in front of the place is amazing. We saw an eagle ray, a squid, the morey eel that lives in the rocks under the dock next door, a spotted drum and lots of incredible coral and fish. A major plus that we could wake up and jump in the water to see such incredible marine life. We spent half our vacation diving, so this was a nice treat. James was awesome. He sent us a great guide book to ensure we had all the local tips of Utila. Mike met us at the airport and set us up with a cab that was awesome enough to stop to allow us to pick up groceries before we made our way to Blue Bayou. The place was cute and clean and had everything you really need. They don't supply any toiletries so make sure you bring you own, or pick them up from town. We loved absolutely everything about the place, except for one little thing which I'm not sure James could fix, sandflies. For some reason they are much worse here than they are by the dive shops in town. They prevented us from enjoying the porch and beach as much as we would have liked to, but everything else was awesome. Highly recommend getting the two organic repellents they sell in town or bringing baby oil and making sure you apply the first day.
I'm a bit torn about this place and here are my reasons:
- Mike is an awesome property manager. Knows everyone and everything about the island. And he even picks you up at the dock to bring you to the house!
- The house is perfectly placed on your own private beach with great snorkelling in less than 5mins! (you can even see a sting ray among other amazing fishes and coral reefs)
- It's on the main road so you can bike anywhere on the island
- the island is very budget friendly
-snorkel gear was free(as long as you fit the sizes)
- I don't know if cockroaches are everywhere in the island, but they were definitely in the house. Those didn't bother me much simply because I assumed they were everywhere(our beach neighbour had them too).
- We were eaten alive by either the ants or possible bed bugs. Our skin markings suggest bed bugs, so we nuked all our travelling clothes once we got home.
- There were so many ants on the bed on our third night that we decided it was "safer" to sleep outside. I slept on the swinging love seat and my boyfriend had to sleep on the hammock.
- Because it's on the main road, there were so many tuk tuks passing by that it sounded like thunder while we were trying to sleep - it's pretty difficult to sleep on the island.
Hosts are friendly and the house is perfectly located, and if bugs and having no sleep aren't a concern for you, this place is perfect. However, we like our sleep and a ant/bed bug free place.
