About this listing

Spacious, peaceful and welcoming environment that lends itself to experience authentic West Harlem and all its grandeur.

The space

Lovely 1 room (furnished) rental in a fabulous brownstone apt located in trendy Harlem! The apt is 5 blocks from Columbia University and City College! The overall space is huge, 2 floor, townhouse style, harwood floors with lots of light. It's very refreshing and a change from the usual cramped quarters of most New York City apartments.

The apt is right around the corner from the world famous 125th street and the A,B,C,D,1, and 2 trains are all 5-7 minute walk. Including the express trains that will get you to Time Square in 15-20 min! Make sure you checkout TKTS to get all the great discount theatre tickets for the hottest shows! The world famous Sylvia's and Amy Ruth's Restaurant are both within 1 mile on Lennox Ave, as well as all the cool new hot spots in Harlem! Great to go exploring down Frederick Douglas Blvd and stop at the Bier Garden, Harlem Tavern, Lito or even 67 Orange. Lots of out door seating, good for people watching! The Harlem waterfront is 5 blocks away and boasts of the World Famous Dinosaur BBQ! You can also find great Italian, Greek, Ethiopian and Spanish restaurants around Columbia University!

There is a grocery store, laundry mat, nail and hair salon as well as the always open bodega within 3 blocks. In addition, if you want to burn some calories take a stroll on the west side river walk! If you are ambitious you can take it all the way down to Wall street and visit the Intrepid or the 9/11 memorial museum. If you want a quick workout, hit New York Sports Club which is in walking distance and right beside Magic Johnson Theatre. There is free street parking however you will have to move your car to the other side of the street for cleaning, which is an hour and a half time time block. At certain times parking spots can be hard to find.

Guest access

Guests have access to kitchen, living room and dining room as well as their own room and shared bathroom.

Interaction with guests

I am very much on the go, so at times we may be ships passing in the night. But I'm very friendly and always willing to share an impromptu chat when we encounter eachother in the house!

Other things to note

Please communicate when you need new towels, bedsheets, soap or the garbage in your room changed. There usually are extra sheets and towels kept in the dresser drawer in the bedroom.

Carmel was a lovely host! My sister and I both stayed at her apartment for a total of 7 days and we had an amazing trip! Carmel was very responsive to our texts/emails/calls and very flexible. This was our first time using AIRBNB and so we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, but Carmel and her apartment made it an awesome experience! Our flight was delayed upon arrival and our check-in time was initially around 4PM, but we arrived at around 10PM and she greeted us at her door and gave a little orientation/welcoming tour of her home. Her apartment is GREAT! Located just 6 minutes away from 3 main stations (very easy to find) and a lot of 24 hour stores/restaurants nearby. The room we stayed in was lovely, it was the perfect size and her living room is exactly as portrayed in the pictures! Carmel was busy with other travels, thus we barely got to see her but that was fine since my sister and I were never really home either. Overall, if I were to travel to NYC again, I would definitely stay at Carmel's apartment again! We had an amazing experience! Thank you so so much for being so flexible Carmel and letting us stay at your lovely apartment!

The room was lovely and spacious like the pictures shown and close to public transport. Carmel is lovely, friendly and very helpful. My only criticism is it could have been cleaner. Thank you so much for the stay.

Although the hostess was away due to extenuating circumstances she promptly responded to questions we had and made sure we had everything we needed. When we met the Carmel she was very friendly and gave lots of advice on things to do and places to check out. The listing was mostly accurate: the room was clean and had towels and some toiletries were provided and the A/C worked but was noisy. However, breakfast was not provided as listed, The area was close to a subway stop which was convenient, but keep in mind that it takes roughly 40 minutes to get to Lower Manhattan. It's about a 10 minute walk to the Apollo Theatre and central Harlem attractions.

Our stay was wonderful, Carmel is a very nice host and the bedroom and the apartment are very confortable. There are lots of subway stations nearby so it was easy going about anywhere in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Stayed here for a week and it was very comfortable. Carmel was super nice - she welcomed me and showed me the place (even though I arrived at 1am). The house was pretty quiet and you almost never see the other tenants so it feels very private. The room was spacious and the bathroom was pretty much a private one for your use. The house is conveniently located close to subway lines and a 10-minute walk from the Columbia University area with lots of cute restaurants.

Carmel's home was as lovely as pictured and she was as gracious as described by other folks. Her place was impeccably clean, bright and organized. Location was very convenient for getting around town. We come to NY regularly and would definitely try to stay at Carmel's in the future.

Very nice place with nearly "exclusive" bathroom, well-equipped kitchen and cozy living room with a lot of decorations of varied cultures. A lot of sunshine in the yellow bedroom on the third floor. 3 blocks away from Hudson River shore, nice for running in the morning.

I am a teacher who loves to travel! I just returned from Spain and Morrocco. I have also journeyed to England, France, Germany, Austrailia, Japan, Trinidad and Peru; not to mention almost every state in the US. Ive been living in Harlem, New York for ten years and I absolutely love the diversity of the city. I love Broadway shows, live music and great comedy. I believe a little kindness goes along way and that all people should be treated with respect.
