We had a wonderful time in Marrakech and staying at the Riad. Karim gave us some great tips as this was our first trip there, he was also very prompt in replying. The Riad is conveniently located close to Jema el Fna and the souks. Kaboura the lady who koocked us breakfast is lovely and she cooks delicious food. We would recommend you take the taxi arranged by the Riad as the driver is reliable and this way you avoid getting lost on first arriving there. You will experience the life of a Marrakechi while living at the Riad so please bring your flexibility along.
A stay in the very authentic Moroccan house will be an experience that you won't forget. Do not look for luxury here, instead focus on the fact that you are living like a Marrakesh local - you will be on your own other than if you opt for daily breakfast and cleaning that is included (we did not) - and the housekeeper does not speak English. We were here in January and experience cold nights and some rain. This house does not have central heating and is open to the sky in the center, so we had some rain on the main floor, and used space heaters in the bedroom and small living area. In the spring and summer this won't be a problem and you'll appreciate the cool internal temperature. Karim was accessible even though he lives out of the country. The Riad manager speaks English.
The location is excellent - an easy and interesting walk to the main square and other sights. There is an excellent market (souk) out the door through your entrance and then left down the main road. Be sure and have Fish and Chips at Le Perle de la Ocean just before the market.
Again, this is a fine and affordable way to live in Marrakesh - but please bring your flexibility along with your carry-on.
Karim was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay at his Riad. For the price, the Riad is lovely, well located and clean. You have to be careful when using the bathroom though, as the shower's are very shallow and water can get everywhere! Breakfast was great and the roof terrace peaceful. We'll worth checking out! Thanks Karim!
We had a wonderful stay at Riad Salam. Many thanks to Karim and his stellar staff for helping make our first stay in Marrakech so wonderful. The Riad is lovely and we enjoyed the warm sunroom where we ate our breakfast, freshly prepared each morning. The breakfast was delicious with fresh juice and warm crepes. We also took advantage of having a meal cooked for us in the Riad which was tasty and plentiful. We were grateful for the heating system as the nights were cool. Karim also arranged for an English speaking guide to meet us at the house to provide us with a map and to answer our questions which was very helpful. The en suite shower was hot and spacious with great water pressure (always a bonus). Overall, a great stay. Thanks Karim!
There were some great things about this house, but also some things that need improved, or that potential guests should take heed of before deciding whether or not to stay here.
First, what is great:
-Excellent transport services if you need an airport pick-up and drop off. Karim arranges this with English-speaking drivers who were very prompt and courteous
-The in-house maid, Kaboura, is wonderful. She prepared wonderful breakfasts and upon request made a delicious, home-cooked lunch for us that was probably the best meal we had in Marrakech
-The riad is beautifully decorated--all the furnishings, decorations, etc really give the guest a sense of place.
Now, some other things to consider before you stay here:
-Since the inside of the house is open-air, there is no roof. This means it floods when it rains, which it did when we stayed there. Puddles of water were everywhere, with very few towels to sop the mess up. In addition, the lighting throughout the house is very poor at night. The combination of flooding and poor light was pretty dangerous--one evening I slipped on a hidden puddle of water and fell down the stairs. I luckily caught the railing and got away with just some nasty bruises huge across my arms and legs, but I can't even imagine what would have happened had a child or elderly person been in the same situation. I would not recommend any individuals with physical limitations or anyone with small children to stay here...it's too risky.
-Although the house says there is internet, it does not work. There is an internet cafe within walking distance of the riad, but just be aware that you are paying then for a service you cannot use.
If you to Marrakech when it's sunny and you don't mind not having internet, then the good may outweigh the bad at the riad. However, if safety and connectivity is a concern to you, you might want to consider booking elsewhere.
Thank you for your feedback, a Riad is a traditional house and is always open-air therefore when it rains there is water in the patio (it rains only a few days during the winter), as you know during the time you were in Morocco there was exceptional flood in the Marrakech area. That being said, your feedback is valuable and we will take it into consideration to get rid of the water very quickly when it does rain. We will also look at the lighting to prevent any problem.
Regarding the internet I wish you had told us during your stay that you had issues with the wifi, it would have been fixed right away. As you can read on other reviews the wifi works very well but it could happen sometimes that there is a problem on the line. I thank you for your feedback and hope you enjoyed your stay. Best regards
What an excellent stay we had at Riad Salam! Our driver, Kamal, met us at the airport, and he was such a great help: thoughtful and knowledgeable. He was amazing on our excursion to the Atlas Mountains, even taking us to see a Berber home and taking us to a trusted rug dealer.
The riad itself is huge and lovely. It's an older building, which only adds to its incredible charm. I fell in love with all of it. And to top it off, we had an amazing woman to cook us traditional Moroccan dishes. An unforgettable experience. Would definitely return!
Beautiful home, delicious food, great location for sightseeing, endlessly kind hosts. Highly recommended!
