The Space

Detached, private garden studio on Santa Cruz's glorious West Side. We are centrally located right off Mission Street, within walking distance of the West Side's great eateries, coffee shops, downtown, the beach, West Cliff drive, and the UC Santa Cruz campus (though that last one is an all uphill walk, and not recommended!)

The studio itself is at the back of the property -- completely private -- with a 400 square foot deck for your exclusive enjoyment. There is a comfy queen-sized bed, refrigerator, and wet-bar type sink in the main area, and a luxurious modern bathroom designed by the firm of Hayes de Fer. Overall though, it's very simple living here: we do have wireless but no television whatsoever, and the shower is outdoors (a garden shower of redwood, concrete, and philodendron). You'll also want to watch out for the neighborhood raccoons if you're going to be coming and going at very late hours.

Overall the property, especially the studio, offers a very quiet and serene setting, but we are in the heart of Santa Cruz, not far from Mission Street, so traffic and normal city noises are often part of the experience. (Be warned: the garbage trucks on Monday morning can be incredibly loud.) If you are an extremely light sleeper, you might want to consider a more remote place.

I live in the main house with my partner Joe and our Siberian husky Wiley. We love meeting new people and having people around, so please come and see us!

PLEASE NOTE: As a result of extremely high demand during the spring and summer we have had to require a 3-night minimum stay. Apologies in advance if this does not fit with your schedule.

  • This was our second time staying at Jon's adorable & cozy garden studio. Jon is an incredible host - so friendly, quick to ensure we had everything we needed and super easy going. We intentionally booked a second time because the location is close to everything, the price is one of the best in the area and the outdoor shower is awesome! We like Jon so much that also made our decision to return a no-brainer. We will definitely be back again! Thanks Jon!

  • We had a really lovely stay in Jon's studio! The space is really comfortable and private and the outdoor shower was actually my favorite part. Jon was a wonderful host... friendly, accommodating and very knowledgeable about the area. He provided us with lots of helpful information and local insider tips that made our stay more enjoyable. We would definitely stay with Jon again when we return to the area.

  • Jon's cozy cottage provided us with a great place to stay, in an ideal location, during our recent trip to Santa Cruz, and he was a wonderful host and guide to all things SC. Clean, comfortable, convenient and convivial best describes his place. We not only recommend it for anyone coming to town, especially to visit a student at very-nearby UCSC, but also we'll hope to stay there next time we're lucky enough to spend a few days in Santa Cruz. (And if you're a cyclist, be sure to check out Eclipse Cycles, literally moments away.)

  • Jon's selfdrawn map was very helpful and his recommendations were more than awesome. I signed up to airbnb because I wanted to get to know local people and to get a better idea of how living is at my holiday destination. That's the reason why I choose airbnb over a hotel. Jon gave us various advices and recommendations so that we really had the chance to get to know Santa Cruz and its people. We had a great time and actually extended our stay in Santa Cruz. Exactly what I expected from airbnb!

The appartment was tidy and very spacious, perfect for two. We were unlucky with the weather, it was very cold, but also for those deep temperatures the outside-shower did work for us.
Our stay at the appartement was all in all very uncomplicated. The neighbourhood is also very nice.

There are lots of nice spots in walking distance, but I would recommend having a car with you. You'll find various exciting places in and around Santa Cruz. I'm sure Jon will help you out if you don't know where to go.

  • Great little studio apartment rental in a convenient westside SC location. Jon was a great host, I went to the restaurants on his list of recommendations and he was five for five -- all great. The studio was clean and outdoor shower was great. You do hear a bit of road noise and noise from the parking lot behind the house on occasion, which was the only issue for me, but he disclosed this beforehand and it didn't prevent me from enjoying the spot.

  • Loved staying here! Jon is above and beyond wonderful and if we weren't so busy with the wedding all weekend I would have made him hang out with us :) Definitely a perfect spot for spending a quiet weekend at the beach...we really couldn't have asked for anything more.

  • We had a very nice stay at Jon's studio. We enjoyed having a private studio, with amenities including a patio to enjoy our morning coffee or late night drink, and an upscale outdoor shower!
Jon gave us a lot of tips on where to go in Santa Cruz, such as coffee places and restaurants, as well as in the area. He was a very welcoming and kind host (so was his cute dog Wiley ;-)
The studio is located close to a neighborhood where you can go shopping for food, grab a coffee or go out to a restaurant (although we didn't try any in this neighborhood). But if you want to go to the beach or downtown, you will definitely need a car.

I moved to Santa Cruz in 1997 to pursue my graduate degree in English literature. Nearly a decade and a half later and I'm still here! There's a reason though . . . Santa Cruz has an incredible draw. When the fog rolls in (which is actually most mornings), it's nothing short of magical.
