Our lounge may be used during the day or join us in the evening while we chill after work, and there is also the cosy family room, with TV, next to the kitchen, leading to our outdoor area at the rear. Full sun in the mornings during summer, shady in the afternoons and a chiminea for evening drinkies/ bbqs.
Interaction with Guests
We warmly welcome our guests and are happy to impart our wealth of local knowledge and help/advise when wanted. We are friendly folk, happy to chat (over a tea, coffee or something stronger!) or to leave our guests to privacy and quiet. We will nearly always be in and around in the evenings.
Situated within England's largest, famous, Lake District National Park, B. In F. has a lovely friendly atmosphere and is quite cosmopolitan. Many people visit and find that they end up living here as it has so much to offer! We are surrounded by picturesque scenery, with lots of lovely walking and easy access to busier central Lakes. We have super pubs, shops, cafés and more (please do take the time to look at the guidebook pegs for all local amenity details!).
Visitors by car can park conveniently in The Square. There are buses to and from Ulverston, Millom & Barrow each day throughout the year with extra buses to Coniston, Ambleside & Ravenglass during school hols. Guests flying to the UK can hire cars or take the train, the local rail station - Foxfield, Cumbria - is about 2 miles away (we can, with prior notice, collect rail travellers). A car is most useful if you wish to see the famous Lakes attractions.
Other Things to Note
We have award winning shops minutes away, Bakery, butcher, grocer, P.O, bank & more for you to browse, cafes, pubs & restaurant too, all just minutes away. Barrow in Furness (13 miles) is our major shopping town and has everything you would expect of a large town/city. Ulverston is a traditional market town, very quaint. The nearest small supermarkets are in Millom (7 miles) and of course, the lakes tourist attractions! There are so many, with Coniston & Windermere just a short drive away. The beautiful Duddon Valley is also well worth exploring. The fells all around us are magnificent.
We want our guests to relax in our home and enjoy our wonderful town. Mucky walking boots to be taken off before entering the house please. We are non-smokers so absolutely no smoking within the house....... outside only. Other than that, mutual respect and........relax and enjoy!
True to its name, Sheila and Dave's place in Broughton in Furness was a real little gem.
Due to flight schedule we arrived at around 2am, Sheila was kind enough to accommodate us, and stayed up until we got there, which we were very thankful for.
The room was spacious, bed was comfortable, and we had plenty of fresh towels.
The morning after, we decided to head out to explore the lakes, Sheila provided us with ample information, as well as maps and guidebooks, that were super helpful. In fact, each day, we headed out to a destination Sheila had recommended, and were never disappointed!
Sheila and Dave were really great hosts, and made us feel welcomed. We were able to interact and converse, while we prepared our evening meals in their extremely well equipped kitchen, with all the herbs and spices one can imagine.
It's been a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to visit the Lake District.
Sheila and Dave couldn't have been more welcoming. The house was comfortable, homely, warm and relaxing. The village seemed lovely- sadly, as I was working, I didn't have time to explore it. I would definitely recommend Laurel Bank to any friends going to the area!
Thank you Rebecca, you were a lovely guest to host. It is a shame it was so much work and no play, but I am so glad that between your busy work schedule that you felt warm, welcomed and able to relax. A real pleasure to have met you. It would be lovely to have the opportunity to host you under 'time off' circumstances.
Best wishes Sheila & Dave
Sheila put on an extremely warm welcome upon our arrival in Broughton; a village I knew well.
Her charming and cosy house enjoys a prime spot on the town's main square, and I would recommend it to anyone thinking about visiting the lakes wholeheartedly.
Our room was clean, tidy and gave the homely feel which epitomises the Air b'n'b ethos. Breakfast was laid on for us and we were also invited to free reign on the house, including the kitchen and produce therein.
I will be recommending her to my friends.
If you would like to know "jolly old England" then this rather distinguished 17th Century B & B house is a must stay. It's charm will greet you in an unexpected way, serving you with bits of England's rich heritage. Located in The Square in the center of the quaint village of Broughton in Furness, this cozy and comfortable residence will tantalize your senses. It's in the heart of the lake region of England; an easy drive to any of the scenic lakes. You can take a boat ride or sit in the cafes and watch the boats come and go and the ducks and other water fowl that frequent the lakes.
The lady of the house is a masterful host. She goes all out for her guests, making sure they have the chance to experience England's delicious country breakfast consisting of back bacon, eggs and crumpets, (Like real English muffins!) among other treats. And don't forget the friendly chats about the plush English scenery. The place is organized, clean and delightful. You'll feel like you got the "real" taste of English hospitality in the heart of England.
We're so pleased that you enjoyed our historic Lakeland area. We are very priviliged to live in such a beautiful place. Hosting you was a pleasure. Thank you, Wayne, for the lesson in speaking/writing chinese, it was fascinating. Your review is fantastic! Thank you so much :-) Regards, Sheila & Dave
I had a great time up in the Lakes District and it was mostly due to Sheila and Dave. Great recommendations on places to go, things to see. Made me feel like I was at home with my parents. Plentiful breakfast and was lucky to also have dinner on Saturday with them. Would stay here again for sure.
It was so lovely to host you Thomas :-) So glad that you felt at home, we enjoyed your company and felt so at ease with you......just like having one of our sons home for the weekend! We hope that you will make a return trip in the future, you will be most welcome. Kindest regards, Sheila & Dave
Sheila and Dave were extremely kind and caring host. They went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. They helped us with directions, had endless amounts of maps for us to use and recommended some wonderful places to visit. Dear Dave even came to our rescue when we got lost and were drenched with rain. Thank you Dave!!!The bedroom was generous in size and having our own bathroom was a treat. We felt extremely fortunate to stay with such genuine, lovely people.
Thank you Louisa and Michelle. It was lovely to host you both. You were such fun to have around, sharing our home. You yourselves are lovely genuine people, a real treat to host :-) and thank you for the Tim-Tams :-)) Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your feedback! Sometimes I can be a scatterbrain!
Sheila is very friendly and a natural host. She entertained our friend for two hours when we were held up getting there and made us very welcome at her home after a long hike. She made us a pot of coffee made us a reservation for dinner at the local pub even though she couldn't get through on the phone and had to nip down there. Her old town house is full of character, and we had a lovely hot bath and a sound sleep in a comfy bed. We can thoroughly recommend Sheila's Hidden Gem for a stay in the Lake District.

I've loved living at Laurel Bank for the past 18 years. I used to do B&B early on. During those few years I had people from all over staying here. It will be good fun to rekindle those days!
I work as a T.A. at a local primary school (since 2000)
My husband, Dave, has lived here since 2003. He has his own business in joinery & carpentry. We love our village life.
Our home is at it's best with more people around. Our children (6 in all) have grown and left the nest (most still near to home), leaving us with 5 spare bedrooms! Our larger families (& friends) are from Liverpool, Nottingham & New Zealand, and they all love visiting us for good company, food, walks and real ale.
We love our local walks, short strolls and lengthier, more challenging, right from our doorstep. We also love our touring caravan, and often choose sites very close to home as our area is so gorgeous.
Travelling the world was a huge part of my life before children, and since Dave and I have hooked up we've enjoyed trips to Bulgaria, Spain, Singapore and best of all, New Zealand, touring in a camper van, north to South, visiting family.
When not working, walking or touring, we relax with good home cooked meals, movies, music, TV, reading, wine, ale........different sorts of all of them.......variety is the spice of life!
We have grand children now, and love their visits and the calm when they've gone home. Our home is very 'child friendly'.
We look forward to meeting new visitors to our friendly home
