  • The place was as listed and the new hire "Mimi" was a really great help to me. She made coffee in the morning (and pancakes once) and gave me advice about the island and a few good guide books to read. Even though she had only just started working there she was always able to assist me, always around and a great asset! I did also talk to Loren briefly when I first got there on the phone and he responded right away. The house was as advertised and had everything I needed. It was a good place from which to explore the island and is very convenient to Hilo and a few spectacular waterfalls. I have only good things to say about my interaction with the people.. my one drawback is the rosters, which live nearby so it took a little adjusting to get used to them. This being said, they are all around the island as I found while staying on the other side.. so really no complaints. You can even walk down to the beach easily from the house. I'd be happy to stay there again! Thanks!

  • We did not have a chance to meet Loren but had from him all good and friendly explanations to get to his place. Although we arrived late at night, we were welcomed by Amy and received all informations. We had read about the frogs singing all night, and had our earplugs ready. But we finally didn't use them and enjoyed this peaceful natural concert. Such a good night. The house is aged but clean and has all what's necessary. We met some nice people there and will probably keep in touch with them. This is the good side of this Hostel typed house: it's an opportunity to meet the other guests. Read carefully Loren's description of his house and you'll know if it matches your expectations (like sharing a bathroom: for us it was no problem at all and happens in many other places). Then you'll have a great time there as we did.

  • Loren's place is lovely but outside of HIlo and not walkable to town. The accommodation is simple and the place is welcoming.

  • When we arrived to Loren's house, we had to wait for about 40 minutes before he got back to his house. However, he was responding to my phone calls and helped us find the right house because apparently the GPS system doesn't take you to the right house. He has the correct directions once you book any of his rooms, but I just didn't have them with me. Then, there was some chaos with the rooms because he thought we were staying at the jungle room, but we were staying at this room. It turned out not to be his fault because the couple who was staying in our room didn't realize that they forgot to book another night. It took us a little while to get to our room but Loren made us really delicious guacamole and even gave us some money for the breakfast because he felt guilty. Looking back, even though it was a little crazy start, Loren is a really nice host! He let us use the boogie boards and utilize the kitchen. I just wish it was a little cleaner overall. Mahalo!

  • I enjoyed staying at Loren's very much. He is a friendly, generous, helpful man and was always ready to help do whatever he could to make my stay a good one. His house is in a great location for me, as I spent a lot of time in Hilo and it is nearby. I had a small refrigerator in my room and that was very convenient. He has lots of stories to share about the island and recommendations for places to visit.

  • Lauren is a very helpful and kind host. His property is just great and gives you a real Hawaiian feeling. It's close to beaches, bank, post office, bakery and shops. We enjoyed our stay so much that we decided to stay for another week.
