Great check-in experience

Recent guests loved the smooth start to this stay.
The Cave is a comfortable cottage on Champagne Ridge only 1 hour from Karen. Nestled against natural rock with floor to ceiling windows it offers stunning infinity views across the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Magadi and Tanzania. The Cave offers the ultimate feel in warmth and coziness, the perfect place to spend quality time with your loved one or as a solo traveler or creative writer looking for a safe retreat.

The Cave is another marvel at The Castle on Champagne Ridge.

The space
Open plan, floor to ceiling windows, natural rock wall, incredible views, and shaded wooden deck makes The Cave a one of a kind. Perfect for couples and singles after a safe and secure staycation in an off-grid cabin.

From the moment you open the front door you realise just how amazing The Cave truly is. On the left is the natural rock rear wall with intricate nooks and crannies that took mother nature thousands of years to create . We have taken some of these nooks and crannies to create a one of a kind lit feature, and a bookshelf.

As you walk toward the open plan living, kitchen and bedroom you are presented with floor to ceiling windows and views to die for as you look out across the Great Rift Valley.

Double sliding doors lead out to a large wooden deck with a gas BBQ, super comfy individual oversized patio chairs and wooden safari style deck chairs with a table.

The compact kitchen has everything you could need including a gas cook top, fridge, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans and utensils. And a gas BBQ grill on the patio.

The Cave is situated over the edge of the cliff on a natural shelf, away from The Castle and The Tower and just above The Dhow and The Nest - which are also exclusively for couples or single travelers.

While we don't have Wifi you will enjoy excellent phone and internet reception with Safaricom (4G) and Airtel (3G/4G).

We harvest rain water, treat it and store in undercover water tanks, therefore it is safe to drink water from the tap. We are 100% solar powered off-grid!

For those who want to limit their time in the kitchen we have some solutions.

- all our cottages have a gas bbq grill making self catering easy. Throw some meat and vegetables on the bbq while enjoying a Tusker and the view.

- preorder takeaway from Bunduz Cafe and pick up on your way through or call for delivery during your stay (menu is in the cottage). Bunduz is located 2kms after turning off at Corner Baridi along the murrum road, on the right hand side on top of the big hill.

- Come with pizza or another take away for the 1st night (and 2nd!) and reheat on the bbq (has a lid so doubles as an oven) or on the gas cooktop.

- Enjoy a Masai Experience and BBQ lunch while supporting our local community tourism venture! This experience can be booked through Airbnb Experience, hosted by Josephine or contact details provided upon request.

- support local entrepreneurs and order from boda guys based in Kiserian. We can supply numbers. Get nyama choma and all the sides delivered from one of the many amazing nyama choma places in Kiserian!

We are self catering, no daily housekeeping (weekly cleaning is included on longer stays). The closest shops are in Kiserian town 18kms away, so please be sure to bring food, drinks and condiments with you. There are phone numbers in the inhouse information sheet for bodas based in Kiserian who can shop and deliver if your supplies run low.

The Cave at The Castle on Champagne Ridge is surrounded by thousands of acres of African bush in the heart of Masai land. Therefore, in addition to larger animals like cows, goats and sheep you may also encounter zebra, eland and dik diks as well as smaller, maybe not so welcome, flies, ants, spiders and rodents. All creatures great and small are integral to maintaining a healthy environment and each serve a valuable purpose. If this is not for you, maybe you are best suited to a city based getaway.

As the rear wall is natural rock, during heavy rains some water may seep through the rock wall. Occasionally water drips over the Cave wall and onto the wooden floor. The floor has been designed to allow water to escape however the floor may at times be a little wet. We provide extra towels to place on the floor when this occurs.

The owners live on the same property so someone is always on hand should you need assistance.

Guest access
Guests have access to 10 acres of our property including the dam. Much of the surrounding area is not fenced so you are free to go for long walks either on top of the cliff or down in the valley.

Champagne Ridge is famous for stunning views and brilliant hiking and biking. It is a very safe area only 1 hour from Karen, 30 minutes from Kiserian or 45 minutes from Ngong Town.

Other things to note
We are totally self sufficient. Our electricity comes from solar power (off-grid) and we harvest and store rain water.

I live on the same property with Tim and our dogs so someone is always on hand should you need assistance.

The house is 1 hour from Karen and Wilson airport and 1 1/2 hours from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in a safe rural location. We can assist with numbers for taxis to and from Nairobi or airports upon request.

Neighborhood highlights

The Cave on Champagne Ridge is only 1 hour from Karen, 30 minutes from Kiserian and 45 minutes from Ngong Town. The Cave is situated on the same property as The Castle, The Nest, The Dhow and The Tower.

The Cave is located at The Castle on Champagne Ridge only 11kms from the turn off at Kona Baridi off Magadi Road on a good murrum road.

Situated in the middle of Masai Land, Champagne Ridge is 1 1/2 hours from Nairobi, the area is classic Africa with Acacia trees, zebra, eland, antelope, gazelles and the occasional ostrich roam freely throughout the area.

The Castle on Champagne Ridge is not far from Ngong, Kiserian, Ongata Rongai or Karen in distance but feels like an entirely different World. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life we enjoy a chilled relaxed rural lifestyle.

During the rainy season (April/May and Nov) you may need a 4x4. We get significantly less rain than Nairobi so most days the last 11.5kms from Kona Baridi on the murrum road is bumpy but fine for all cars, occasionally it does rain making the road a little slippery in parts.

Originally from Adelaide, Australia I have lived on the African continent since 2003 working in tourism as well as running our own community solar power project Napenda Solar Community. I have spent the better part of my working life outside of Australia and living all over the World. The Castle on Champagne Ridge near Kiserian is our refuge, a place to relax and recharge the batteries. I love to cook so spend my free time in the kitchen working on some new recipe or simply experimenting with various ingredients and textures. Thiemo, my husband, is the brains behind the design of all our 5 cottages (Nest, Dhow, Cave, Tower and Castle). He is a solar power guru and my own personal Mr Fix It! We have 5 German Shepherd dogs; Sally, Stella, Beau, Zanny and Pikey who are thoroughly spoiled, although they may not agree! They love their daily walks, swimming in the dam and playing soccer (football). Sally and Stella are adopted, while Beau and Zanny are rescue dogs; and Pikey arrived on our front lawn in Dec 2019 begging for food and never left! The Castle is open to all regardless of religion, culture, sexual orientation or nationality. After all, variety is the spice of life.
