SummerSalt is a lovely secluded 4 bedroom/3 bath villa at the end of a quiet private lane just above Smuggler's Cove on Tortola's breathtaking West End. The home is designed for airy, easy, and casual yet gracious living. Comprised of two separate living quarters, a main house and guest cottage, SummerSalt affords plenty of space, privacy, and flexibility. The large rooms all have terraces which give way even larger views. The main living areas include an expansive great room that flows out onto the veranda and on to the pool and gardens which are all located on the same level reducing the need to go up and down stairs throughout the day.
The villa is just a few hundred feet from, and less than a 5 minute walk to, Smuggler's Cove, which is widely considered one of the best beaches in the BVI. Additionally, SummerSalt is just a 10 minute drive to Soper’s Hole and it's marina, shops, dining, and groceries. There you can dine at Pusser's, stock up on food and drinks at the Harbour Market, or get outfitted for fishing, surfing, and more at Island Surf and Sail. Soper's Hole is also home to sailing charters like Aristocat, Kuralu, and Voyage Charters which offer day sails as well as bareboat and crewed charters. There you can also find Tortola's premier PADI scuba shop and dive tour operator Blue Water Divers. Just on the other side of the marina is the Jolly Roger restaurant and the West End ferry dock. Having the ferry so close means that you'll be getting settled in to you vacation just minutes after you arrive.
The main villa at SummerSalt has an expansive great room with dramatic vaulted ceiling and French doors opening to the covered al fresco dining porch, pool terrace and covered veranda. Step from the master bedroom, into the great room, onto the terrace, and into the pool, with no stairways to navigate between kitchen and pool. A 12-foot long custom-made mahogany bar/peninsula spans the professionally designed kitchen allowing several "chefs" to work simultaneously. The master bedroom has its own set of wide French doors opening to the veranda, a king-sized bed, and private master bath with an even more private outdoor stone shower with hidden views of Smuggler's. Downstairs in the main house are 2 additional bedrooms both of which can each be set up as either 2 twin beds or 1 king, depending on your preference.
The charming guest cottage has a its own living room, as well as it's own kitchen with custom mahogany cabinets, and a private covered dining porch. The cottage's air conditioned bedroom is equipped with a queen sized bed and a private bath.
Each of SummerSalt's two villas is equipped with a TV, DVD, VCR, IPod docking/CD stereo system, hotel safe, telephone, alarm clock, and hair dryer. In addition, the main house has an Bose outdoor speaker system, combination fax/answering machine, cordless telephone and collections of DVDs, CDs, movies, and extensive set of books. as well as a house computer and high speed WiFi internet access. Every room and vantage point offers unique and breathtaking vistas of Smuggler's Cove, Jost Van Dyke, Sandy Cay, and a handful other islands.
Maid service is included both prior to your arrival and again mid week, and there is an on-island manager is close by to lend a hand but only when you decide you'd like assistance. Food and spirits can be provisioned for your arrival (free with qualifying purchase), or a personal chef, or daily maid service can be all arranged to ease your stay.
What distinguishes SummerSalt?
It's in the details. It's things like the fruit trees that are a part of the gardens. Grown exclusively with rainwater, our guests can pick fresh organic heirloom bananas, limes, coconuts, mangoes, and even exotic soursops -- all of which are very different than those commercially available back home. It's other subtleties too, like our fair employment practices which pay our employees on salary (not just when we need them) and well above the prevailing wage. This, in turn, supports a sustainable community. In fact, every person who works with us to make SummerSalt great has each been with us for at least ten years.
SummerSalt is further set apart by it's main living area all being situated on one floor which avoids having to repeatedly trudge up and down stairs whenever you need a snack or your margarita or bushwhacker or painkiller refreshed. The villa is additionally differentiated by the gracious size of the eating areas which seat over 10 people quite comfortably. Another unique characteristic of the home is it's location. SummerSalt boasts nearly 180 degrees of unobstructed views but also has a private path that brings you to the beach in less than 5 minutes. This is a feature that is truly uncommon in that most villas in the BVI offer either one or the other, but very seldom both.
Furthermore, SummerSalt has been the choice of hundreds of guests in it's nearly 15 years of operation and many groups return year after year. The villa has become the second home for many travelers and we are truly thrilled and honored each time they return. Additionally, because we have owned the home for so long, we are able to offer some of the most competitive rates on Tortola.
RULE OF THUMB: SummerSalt is a privately owned villa furnished with the owners personal things. Please treat it with the same level of care and courtesy you would your own home.
Rates are for up to 4 guests enjoying the main and guest villas. Each additional guest is $99 per night with a maximum of 6 people including children. Plans change & others may decide to join you at the last moment. Happens to us too... please please contact us prior to arrival for approval. All normal utilities (except for long-distance phone calls) are included in the rental rate. Please be earth friendly. As is usual throughout the Caribbean, electricity is generated from fossil fuels & rain water is collected/stored and we ask that you use only what you need. SummerSalt's reserves are large yet no one wants to buy & truck water in while on vacation.
After careful consideration, we've arranged for SummerSalt's wonderful housekeeper and staff to thoroughly clean the villa before you arrive, again mid week (1 week rentals) or twice during stays 10 days or longer, and then again after your departure. This is for hotel-type general cleaning, laundry, and tidying. If, however, you prefer more frequent service, we can arrange maid service as often as you wish at an price of $100 per visit. A washer and dryer is available on-site for guest use. Any provisioning/shopping, bike/kayak rentals, personal laundry service, a chef, massage services should be arranged in advance. Prices are set according to services required and we'll do our best to arrange them for you. Guests often ask about tipping and tips are greatly appreciated.
The main house has a desk top computer with high speed wifi Internet, voicemail/answering machine and cordless telephone. Local calls are included in our villa rental rate and we feel a note of caution is appropriate regarding direct dialed international calls. The cost of international calls placed from the BVI is usually much higher than calls originated in the US, Canada, or Europe to the BVI. We recommend using an online phone such as (website hidden) or (website hidden) Voice for your international outbound calls to avoid phone charges that are orders of magnitude higher than you are accustomed to
LOUD, LATE PARTYING:
SummerSalt is located in Belmont Estate, a private, residential area of mostly year round residents. We want you to enjoy yourselves while in residence and expect some amount of partying to be a part of your holiday. We do ask you be considerate of your neighbors. Unfortunately, experience dictates that NO parties or gatherings for groups larger than those renting the house are permitted without our written permission - PLEASE talk with us about your needs and desires well before you arrive.
SAFETY AT SUMMERSALT:
SummerSalt receives few unexpected guests. We'd rather you err on the side of caution and recommend that you:
Don't bring valuables with you- leave them at home
Always lock up when no one's at SummerSalt, even when you're down at the beach for a quick dip, as well as overnight.
Stash your cash, plane tickets, and passports in the hotel type safes installed in each villa.
In general we recommend that you and your guests adopt "better safe than sorry" policies and practices.
THE POOL AND GROUNDS:
Both the pool and gardens will be serviced regularly. Please expect someone will stop by periodically during your stay, usually Friday morning. PLEASE NOTE - THE TERRACE AND POOL ARE NOT CHILD PROOF - THERE IS NO FENCE OR GATE RESTRICTING OR LIMITING ACCESS AND THE POOL HAS NO STEPS. RENTERS & GUESTS SHOULD BE AWARE THEY ACCEPT FULL AND COMPLETE RESPONSIBLE AND LIABILITY FOR ANY AND ALL ACCIDENTS THAT MAY OCCUR. PLEASE TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS TO INSURE THEIR SAFETY AND WELL BEING.
SPECIAL REQUESTS & BABY EQUIPMENT:
We can arrange almost anything you wish with ample advance notice - please discuss your needs with us and we'll provide whatever assistance, dining/restaurant information, and island activities you wish to experience as part of your SummerSalt holiday. Infants and toddlers are included in the head count, which determines your rental rate. Baby items such as a Port-a-Crib, cot, portable playpen or high chair may be arranged for a fee. (Car seats may be available from the car rental car agency for a small fee- please request one when your jeep reservation.
We ask that bedroom doors and windows be kept shut (exterior doors and windows locked) at night when the air conditioning is on. Lost and damaged remote controls require the service company to make a service call to replace and recalibrate the units- please handle them with care as they are subject to a $100 per unit fee. Please be sure to leave the remote controls units on the bedside tables so they are available for the next guest

I'm Charlie Muir. Our family has been vacationing in the BVI since 1990. All of us loved our Tortola vacations, my parents decided we needed roots there and built SummerSalt Villa in 1998. I'm now helping manage it and enjoying the process. It's our family home, we call it "barefoot villa" becuz we rarely wear shoes while enjoying life there. It's an amazing place- airy & casual yet with all the comforts. Lots of room and a great design flow between inside and outside areas. Tropical gardens even a mature lime tree right by the pool and stunning views. Being able to walk down to Smuggler's Cove is fantastic. Smuggler's is magical, Tortola is a great place, BVIlanders are kind, and my memories of livin, limin, & loafin there are some of my fondest.
