The Beachfront tent 2 has a shady front porch overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You can stroll out to the beach for the sunset, and have a nice hot shower in the attached bathroom. The tent has a king size bed, but we can add a bed if you need it.
My boyfriend and I had planned to stay at Rafiki Beach Camp for 9 days. Upon arriving to the Beach Camp we realized that 9 days may be too long of a stay since we had not planned to rent a vehicle. It seemed that all the other guests that had arrived were only staying for 1-4 nights and everyone had rented a vehicle. This is important to note because although the Beach Camp provides a wonderful breakfast each morning, there are few, if any, dining options within walking distance.
The beach is beautiful and steps away from the tents. The Beach Camp is very secluded, and is one of the few lodging options that is still operating along the road. You will feel like you have the beach all to yourself. Matapalo is great for getting lost in the beach life and napping in a hammock, but if you are looking for more options to seek entertainment, walk in national parks, dine at local establishments, and shop at local markets, you will need a vehicle to drive to a larger city such as Manuel Antonio, Quepos or Uvita.
Our host, Lautjie, was an excellent tour guide on our kayaking trip through the Mangroves, it is obvious that his passion is in nature tours. We recommend the kayak tour, however be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, water, and snacks as it is a long journey (approx. 4 hours).
With all this in mind, we decided to stay for 3 nights as opposed to 9. We had a great time relaxing by the pool and enjoying the ocean breeze in one of the many hammocks. We were even able to spot two sloths lazing around in the trees also enjoying the beach life. :)
Rafiki Beach Camp was wonderful. Matapalo is a small beautiful beach town, and the tents are truly luxurious. We stayed in one of the beach front tents. We had running hot water, a lovely tiled bathroom, a view of the ocean from our deck, and a comfortable massive bed (two large beds pushed together). We were there over Christmas which is the high season for tourism in Costa Rica, but Matapalo beach was practically empty!
The owners were extremely helpful and friendly. We got a ride into town to run errands, and they did our laundry for us. For breakfast every morning we got a large delicious platter of fruits, eggs, and toast. We also were able to use the outdoor kitchen, which was great for us because we like to cook when we travel.
The wifi was spotty in our tent, but strong enough in the kitchen to (website hidden) video call. The wifi was not an issue for us because we didn't want to be on our laptops in that beautiful setting anyway.
Getting to Matapalo by bus from San Jose was easy. We took a tracopa bus and just asked the driver to drop us off at Matapalo where Mauri (I might have misspelled that) picked us up.
Be sure to bring plenty of insect repellent and anti-itch cream or after-bite as the bugs get a little bad around dusk. Although during the day, the bugs were not a problem, and the tents have mosquito net windows.
Rafiki Beach Camp was a great place to stay, and if we are in that area again we definitely want to go there. We are thinking of planning a trip there with more of our family next time.
Rafiki Beach Camp is run by a lovely couple with great local knowledge and love of nature and conservation. They have two very cute kids too. The location was perfect for us - secluded swim able beach, pool, good food and easy drive to main attractions. Go on the kayaking tour - great wildlife and initial experience before going to Corcovado national park for us. Everything you need.
When we booked one of Lautjie's beach tents in Matapalo, we thought we were just going to get a nice place to stay, but we got a whole lot more. We got a smart, informative guide to the area, a lethargic sloth sighting, a secluded beach, great coffee, carefully prepared breakfasts and a gracious family to welcome us. Lautjie knows the area so well and is great at both providing recommendations and leaving you alone to explore. We also loved the Aqua Hike he took us on, waking up to the ocean right outside our tent screen, and the clean, sparkling pool. Such a great vacation!
