Welcome to the Bock House.
***We now have Comcast Xfinity internet service for extremely fast wireless internet speeds. 50 mbps download and 10 mbps upload.
Because we only cater to guest that stay 30 days or longer our house feels more like a home shared by a few friends rather than a BnB filled with weekend tourist.
Most of our guest usually are here for an internship, their sabbatical or to look for a more permanent living situation in the city. I work form home in the software industry and my girlfriend works in real estate. We know the city well and are usually around to help figure out a place to go or how to best get there. Our two dogs are very friendly and can always lead you to the park or Sam's corner store for their treat.
We live in the Alamo Square historic district and are located just a block away from the famous Alamo Square and Painted Ladies Houses. This is almost exactly in the geographic center of the city with lots to do locally and two bus lines close by that can get you almost anywhere you need to go.
We are a fun and active house with a variety of people usually ready to explore the city or chill with a cookout in the back yard. Our home is in a traditional 3-flat Victorian style house. There are 6 bedrooms. My girlfriend and I live in one, a female friend of ours from India lives in another and the other four are rented through AIr BnB.
The house was built in 1907 and is located within the Alamo Square Historic District. The #5 bus stop is just outside the front door (go to the beach or downtown) and the #22 is just 2 blocks down the street (will go to the Mission or Upper Pac Height/Marina District). The famous SF bike wiggle is just a few blocks from the house. This helps get you around town with the least amount of hills.
If you have a car you can park for free on the street but after 5 p.m. it may take a little driving around to find a space. Our neighborhood is one of the last ones not to require a local parking permit. The street cleaning is only once a week so you can find parking where you can leave your car for up to a week at a time. Make sure you curb your tires when parked on a hill. They will ticket you for not doing it in SF.
If you are just planning to travel around the city we recommend using public transportation, bikes or taxis and leaving your car parked. Bikes can be bought for $100 -$300 of (website hidden) and then resold when you leave for about the same price. I can help acquire or sell a bike for you if needed.
We will be glad to help advise on how to best get around and suggest good local hangouts. Divisadero St. is just 2 blocks away with plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars and the Independent for live concerts. The famous Haight St. area and Golden Gate Park are just a short walk or bike ride away. If you like Jazz music the Filmore area is right around the corner with lots of options including Yoshi's and the Boom Boom Room. If you are looking for a larger venue for live music try the The Filmore (6 blocks away) where many famous bands often play.
Everyone will have their own room with a locking door. The kitchen/living room and connected back porch are our common social area. A game of darts on the back porch or a BBQ in our backyard are common. Our two dogs are 10 yrs old and very mellow except when it is time to go to the park.
The kitchen is available for you to use any time including cookware, plates, spice rack, etc. You are welcome to keep things in the food pantry and refrigerator. Just make it your home.
There are two toilets and one shower in 3 separate rooms. So two toilets are still available when someone is in the shower. There is usually not an issue in the morning trying to take a shower since we work from home and most of our guest are not here for a typical 9-5 work schedule.
Our neighborhood has mostly Victorian style residential dwellings in a safe area with the only businesses being there to support locals. We are far enough away from downtown, the Mission and the financial district to feel safe while it's still quick and easy to reach them by bus when needed.
The bed in this room is a queen-size with a standard box spring and mattress on a bed frame. Very comfortable. The room as a flat screen tv with DirectTV including the NFL package. We also have a very fast wi-fi connection and an inkjet printer for the room if needed.
Make sure you look at the weather for the time you are coming. Our weather is not typical compared to the rest of the country. You will want a warm jacket most of July but sometimes just a t-shirt in December.
NO smoking cigarettes in the house but OK on the covered back porch or in the back yard.
A house cleaner comes once a week and can clean your room if you want for no extra charge. She does not do sheets or laundry but there is a washer and dryer in the basement. $2 for washer and no charge for dryer. We will have clean towels and bedding for you when you check in. If they need to be cleaned during your stay we will leave that up to you. If you need extra towels or bedding just let us know. There is a corner store two blocks away that will have any personal items you may need. A Lucky's and a Safeway grocery store are both with in walking distance or short bus trip. A Walgreen's drug store is also just a few blocks away.
We have fishing gear, fresh or saltwater, available for you to use. Those that fly RC planes can borrow a plane. We have electric planes for the park or sailplanes for slope flying on the coast. Camping gear is also available for your use.

Great place! great people, Drew is the man
For a trainee job I spent a very good time at Drews place together with my boyfriend who was also working here. You will feel really home here, Drew and Julie are great hosts. Everybody in the house was cool, chatty, open, helpful, cheerful and just great.
And there was really no problem about the single-shower. Most of the guys work from home and don't need it early in the morning. Otherwise you can just talk to each other and figure it out. We stood here during wintertime, it can get quite cold because of the huge window front of some rooms. But there is also a radiator in each room, there won't be a problem about it.The dogs are cute, they appriciate it a lot to get treats and to go out for a walk. Unfortunately there is no common room besides the kitchen, but here is really the meeting place of the house.;-) Drews place is a basic but very homy and nice place. I am highly recommending everybody to come and stay very central in the heart of San Francisco. You can take the bus right in front of the house to be in the city center in about 15 minutes.
My daughter spent a month here between semesters and really loved it! Great House, Great host, Great location!! So happy with this arrangement! Thanks so much Andrew!
This is a very easy review to write - Drew is the nicest person you'll ever meet, and he'll do anything to make your experience here feel like home. Atmosphere is very sociable, and we made some real friends in the two months we were here. Fantastic location (with a bus stop right outside) in a nice part of town, great people, and cool old dogs. Fun, sheltered backyard with heaters and BBQ too, excellent for San Francisco summer (read: September-October). We had a really good time here, and can't recommend it more highly. Thanks guys! - Russ and Steffi
The stay at Drew's place was amazing. When I first got to SF I was getting some bad luck and Drew went out of his way to make sure I had a place to stay. I stayed there for four months and my experience in the city would not have been as awesome as it was without everyone in the house. I stayed there longer than most so I got to see quite a few people come and go but the overall environment stayed the same; warm and friendly.
The room was very nicely furnished when I got in. It can get cold but there's a space heater to keep things really warm so that was never a problem. Sometimes the internet wouldn't reach the room but Drew would move the router (or get a better one) and it wasn't a problem. During my stay there he even upgraded the wireless and it's crazy fast now. My entire experience there was along these lines; extremely accommodating. Drew (and everyone in the house) will go out of their way to help make you feel at home.
And of course there's squirt and mona, two awesome dogs. In short, the house is more comfortable and friendly then any renting experience I've heard of. All the rooms in the house are great so if you're looking to rent in SF I highly recommend staying here.
This is a great place to stay. I enjoyed it very much. It's a really nice house, in a great location and the people staying there are really nice. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay in the city.
We moved from NYC and felt right at home thanks to our hosts! After the long drive cross country, it was a relief to find our accommodations very comfortable (real bed in private room, lots of blankets, closet and drawer space, cable tv, wireless internet), clean (linens and bedroom spotless, 3 bathrooms and kitchen extremely well kept throughout our stay), and in a safe and lively part of the new city we came to explore! With Drew as our ever helpful guide, we came to love San Francisco and the extended family at the Bock House! Alamo Square Park is a lovely respite right around the block with gorgeous views that attract crowds for sunset. The neighborhood, NOPA/ Western Addition, has endless entertainment; nice restaurants and fun bars and cafes, beautiful yoga studio, and a DIY workshop with very affordable classes. Transportation is right on the corner and was super convenient for getting to work and sight-seeing! Downtown SF, Golden Gate Park, and many other fun neighborhoods and attractions are within walking distance. All in all, a fantastic stay with good people in a charming neighborhood with practically all the comforts of home! This was a big move for us and we will always be grateful for those who helped us along the way. Drew and the Bock House will be in our hearts forever and we hope to visit often! Thanks for everything!
Very nice time spent at Andrew's place! Great location, a few meters away from Alamo square, and a bus stop just in front of the house. Very laid back atmosphere. Recommended, for especially for easygoing people.
Drew and Raven are fantastic--they are helpful, generous, and a ton of fun. There always seems to be some hilarious thing (with snacks!) happening in the kitchen, and they are full of great ideas involving things to do in SF. They even took my dog for walks and watched him when I went out of town for a weekend.
I had the front bedroom (the one that has yellow paint), and it was big and sunny and very comfortable. The house is perfectly located in the one part of central SF that doesn't have awful parking, so I never had a big problem dealing with that. There are also like 6 bus lines that pass within a block or two, so getting around is super-easy. It's also close to Little Star pizza, Candy Bar, and Cafe Abir--the most appealing little coffee shop ever.
Definitely check this place out--I highly recommend it.
Drew is a very helpful host, always ready to make your stay comfortable. The room was great, the house is 30 minutes walk from the center and he has no problems to lend his bikes. I recommend it!
