Longwood House is a century farm house nestled into the Niagara Escarpment south west of the villages of Meaford and Thornbury Ontario. This 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom brick home sits at the end of a long driveway that cuts into a hill historically known as Scotch Mountain. Complete privacy awaits you as you settle in for a weekend, week or month long stay. Upstairs there are two bedrooms with king sized beds, 1 bedroom with a single bed and a sitting area with a single pull out bed to accommodate a total of 6 people comfortably. Each room is furnished with an eclectic mix of antiques found in the area through local farm auctions. The upstairs bathroom has a stand up shower, toilet and sink. There is also a small desk in the sitting area that is great for using your laptop. The house while not having a TV, is equipped with wireless internet throughout so feel free to bring your laptop to play your movies. There is also a bluetooth Bose player that connects easily to your phone or computer.
During the winter the main source of heat is a wood stove - there is plenty of wood and it's easy to operate. There is also a washer and dryer, dishwasher and microwave in addition to the stove and fridge.
Downstairs you will be amazed by the amount of light that floods the house as we have slowly opened up the once small rooms to create a large living room that flows into a full dining room that flows into the farm kitchen. Open shelving, a huge farm sink and butcher block counters are the perfect place for gathering after winter and summer activities. The dining room is furnished with press back chairs and a harvest table that has been in this house for close to 100 years. There is a propane fireplace in the dining room to add the perfect touch in the winter months. The living room boasts a large wood stove, linen slip covered oversized couch and love seat and huge coffee table. All of the windows look out into the trees and yard space that surround the property. Off of the living room is a front porch that is perfect for cocktails in the later summer afternoon sun. Attached to the dining room on the other side of the house is a completely screened in porch with another harvest table and chairs that's perfect for summer entertaining. Outside of the screened porch is more seating and a large propane BBQ. All around the house are century pines, lilacs and wild apple trees. Perennial gardens flower all summer and are filled with birds and butterflies. Wild Turkeys, rabbits the odd ground hog and Deer often come to visit in the early morning or at dusk. Touching the property to the south are acres and acres of apple trees that are spectacular in their spring bloom and then again in late summer, early fall as they are loaded with apples. There is a seasonal stream that runs along the property that can be heard from the bedroom windows in the evening - perfect to fall asleep to!

We had an amazing and relaxing time at Longwood house over the weekend. It was very clean and organized, which can be easily overlooked by the charming decorations and attention to detail.
Cosy is the best way to describe the house. The detailed instructions cover pretty much everything one could ask about staying at the house, and discovering the surrounding area. The recommendations are also spot on ('The Flying Chestnut' is delightful)
Everything was pretty much stocked for us (including firewood!) leaving time for us to unwind and take in the beauty. We will certainly return to discover the fall and winter at Longwood House!

Honestly, this was the perfect place for a quiet getaway for two tired new parents. The home was perfect in every way, and we were beyond thrilled with the surrounding area. We arrived without a plan, and found ourselves amongst great little restaurants, shopping and wine vineyards-making new friends that shared a wonderful piece of the world with us!
Dave could not have been more helpful, providing not only the perfect accommodations, but a host of suggestions for us! We were ever-so-grateful!
Cozy and comfy beds, beautiful home and land--we'll be back, without a doubt! Next time, for a longer stay!
We spent some days during March Break at Longwood House - and it was really enjoyable. Everything was as described; beautiful surroundings, lovely clean home with all amenities. Dave was very gracious, permitting us to check in earlier than expected on our arrival day, and sending us very helpful detailed directions to get there. We took our children, ages 8&10, who had a good time exploring the grounds; river, apple orchard, scenery, chickadees, etc, really poetic. The fireplace kept the house very warm, and Dave stocked plenty of firewood. The kitchen was very organized, making it easy to find things, and well supplied. There was nothing I would change about Longwood House, or add to it. Although it is beautifully decorated with antiques and thoughtful tones, there was plenty of modern about it; lots of iPad plugs available, good wifi, dishwasher, washer/dryer - and an iPod in dock with an amazing collection of music on it. Lovely coffee table books too.
We were able to enjoy some lovely meals, play a few games of Clue by the fire, watch some movies - in between downhill skiing and exploring the nearby towns - there was nothing not to like, and I would recommend a stay at Longwood House, and gracious hosts Dave and Jean-Philippe. Thank you for sharing.
We had a great long-weekend at Longwood House - it was precisely as lovely as the listing described. The house is beautiful, and we made great and ample use of the well-equipped kitchen. The trip was planned as a little respite from our busy city lives, so we expected to spend our days and nights nestled in Longwood….but when we realized how closely situated the house is to local towns and to the Bruce Trails, we ended up exploring the area in the afternoons. With our dogs, we hiked through gorgeous trails every day, excited to discover what the area had to offer. Dave and Jean-Philippe have clearly put a lot of care (and good taste!) into their country home…and we really appreciated how welcoming and relaxing they made the entire experience for us, from booking to being to leaving. Thanks guys!
Spent the loveliest 2 days at Longwood for our 5th wedding anniversary. Communication with Dave was informative and prompt. The home/land is so beautiful, warm, clean, spacious yet completely cozy. Nothing beats the wood burning fireplace to keep you warm. Amazing kitchen to cook in and even snow shoes to explore the surrounding orchards. I highly recommend checking out "scenic cave" for snow shoeing or cross country skiing (about a 30 min drive from house) and also recommend shuffling the ipod they have there. Almost 7000 songs of the most eclectic mix! I actually have some new fave songs I had never heard before that i now intend to download. It hurt our hearts to leave this little piece of paradise. Thanks for sharing!!! We can't wait to come back.
Our visit to Longwood was amazing! It was the perfect getaway. We really appreciated being able to bring Zephyr, our dog, along! Dave was a wonderful and attentive host. We'd love to go back again!
About the Host, Dave Willis
Partners in life and crime who enjoy travelling with and without friends. We both work in Toronto, one is a TV news reporter/anchor the other works in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. We are more of the back pack and public transit kind of travelers and love to meet, see and experience the "real" people and sights of the places we visit. We are quiet, conscientious and respectful of the places we visit and stay. We speak 7 languages, have been on all but 1 continent and have made life long friends from our travels, all over the world. We LOVE, sitting in cafe's with the local paper, we LOVE laying on a beach and swimming all day, we LOVE hiking, we LOVE great food and great wine at home or at an amazing restaurant. We have differing travel tastes - one loves Romania, Russia Turkey etc. and one loves Italy and France - we have dreams of owning a farm in Argentina - it's one of our favourite places on earth!
