The Space

Quiet, private, furnished, first-floor, mid-'20s, flapper-era bedroom villa with renovated kitchen, bathroom. Spanish style. Equidistant from Mid-Wilshire, Beverly Blvd., Melrose Ave., Fairfax Ave. districts. On Hollywood's southwest border, also known as Mid-City West. Steps away from the Grove, Farmers Market, CBS TV City, Pan Pacific Park (please search those terms to learn more about the immediate area).

Spanish-bungalow has its own, exclusive front door with own street address and mailbox, plus large front, hedged, paver-stone patio (good for open-air dining). It's fully updated with new paint, hardwood floors; fully-equipped, sunny, eat-in kitchen; a laundry-room with washer-dryer separates; the new patio, off living room, with 9-foot umbrella--again, good for al fresco dining, entertaining; also featured--a walk-in closet; an Italian queen-sized bed with French linens; an Italian slide-out twin daybed-couch, also with French linens (for a few nights' use by loved ones or friends in tow); a new 42" LCD TV with DirectTV (cable includes movie channels); a custom cream-colored wicker rocker; a blonde-wood rocker with white-cotton cushion; a long desk, desk chair, generous shelving, and a healthy WiFi system.

Five- to 15-min. trip to famous sites such as Universal Studios Hollywood, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman's
Chinese Theater, Hollywood Bl. & Vine St. Short walk to funky and/or elegant shops/eateries on Melrose Ave., Beverly and La Brea Blvds. Take a short five-minute walk to the Grove or Farmer's Market (adjacent to the Grove--a casual showbiz meeting place with produce stands and ethnic food stalls). Short walk, too, to other close high-end cafes/shops offering kosher and ethnic cuisine. Or walk to Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Erewon, and Ralph's foodstores for food to prepare or ready-to-eat meals.

Take two-block walk to Pan Pacific Park with its hiking trails, Holocaust museum, free fitness center. A short 25 min. walk gets you to Wilshire Blvd. and its three well-known, adjacent museums--the L.A. County Museum of Art, the Petersen Automotive Museum, the L.A. Craft & Folk Art Museum. Need health care or emergency help? It's only a five-minute, two-mile car trip to Cedars-Sinai Hospital & Medical Center.

A car is not essential due both to the central location and public transit nearby at Gardner/Beverly (connects to Metro subway station at Vermont/Beverly). But if a car is still desired, nearest Hertz Rent-a-Car office is a 12 min. walk away (.6 mi); nearest Enterprise Rent-a-Car office is a 13 min. walk away (.7 mi). Zip car station nearby.

Hang your hat at our welcoming house to avoid those busy, difficult hotels-motels during your extended L.A. stay-- whether you're here as a working professional or your own "Travelartist Diva," seeking to savor L.A.'s eternal summer.

***FAQs***

Parking? Yes, there's on-street permit-parking directly in front of the villa, viewable from indoors, day and night. At night, the street is illuminated by several high-intensity LCD street lamps. Host provides permit, returnable w/key at end of stay.

Public transit? Yes. Metro bus stops on Beverly Blvd. only two blocks away, a 2-min walk. Metro bus stops on W. Third St., about four blocks away, a 7-min walk. These give access to Metro bus lines going east to downtown and west to Beverly Hills, Westwood, West LA and Santa Monica, etc. Useful Metro bus #14 going east at Gardner/Beverly connects quickly to Metrorail station at Vermont/Beverly. From there, visits to the various areas, whether Hollywood, Downtown, or even Exposition Park (the California Science Center--via #754 bus) possible and take about 25-40 min. Taking the bus the other way, west, first, gets you to a number of north-south buses (207/217) at Beverly/Fairfax, and onward in about 40 min to places like Getty Center in West LA/Brentwood. Metro "Rapid" buses are express buses also available to the Westside. Please utilize (website hidden) Maps, of course, before using system. Also, plan on visiting a number of places within an area such as Hollywood or Downtown, since it's mostly feasible to visit only one of those areas per day.

Kitchen amenities? Yes, these include basic stoneware, silverware, pots, pans, glassware, containers, appliances, etc.

House stays cool? This part of L.A. sufficiently inland and elevated that the installed ceiling fan & A/C unit are rarely needed. Villa stays cool on the hottest days--five windows open to and admit the daily, southwesterly, offshore breeze. Coastal L.A.'s climate is very cool and dry, with low humidity, few bugs. Patio's French door, tall side windows openable.

Is the area safe? Yes, residents freely use the sidewalks and streets at night, but not noisily, to reach their cars and attend parties and get-togethers, which are common. Front patio and street parking in front of house bathed in beams of light from bright LCD streetlights steps away. House has own exterior lights, barred windows, and deadbolt locks.

On-site agent-manager? Yes. Professional agent-manager lives in a sister house a few doors down the block. The agent is available 24/7 by phone/email or live to assist with maintenance, cleaning, security, emergencies and guests' other needs.

Is area "hip"? Yes, it's a hip combination of quiet/private, on the one hand, and metropolitan/cosmopolitan, even touristy, on the other.

Food stores nearby? Yes, again, you'll be able to take a short walk to multiple Ralphs, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and Erewhon food stores nearby.

Close subway station? Besides Vermont/Beverly, there's Hollywood/Highland, site of Kodak Theater and film industry's annual Academy Awards ceremony.

Earthquake hazard? No. House has withstood all L.A.-area tremors/earthquakes without damage for many decades. Its foundation serviced and rebolted to the frame in late 2011.

  • Great location, nice apartment with next to new furnishings. The manager was very professional and courteous in our dealings with him. Will stay there again if we return.

  • I've stayed at the place for 12 days and everything was perfect! I love love love the area, the space, the natural lights and actually everything about the place! I'd be more than happy if I can manage to stay at this place again on my next trip to L.A. Highly recommend!

  • Clean, close to everything, safe and friendly helpful host. I had a fantastic stay here. Everything was perfect. Cant wait to come back, I will be staying here again for sure!!

  • My fiance and I stayed in this apartment for several days in November 2013. Bill was a wonderful host. He accommodated our late arrival, greeting us late at night after our plane arrived later than expected, and our early departure. The place is in a great location, close to many great shops and restaurant, and in a quiet neighborhood. The apartment is clean and very well-kept. You can tell he cares about his home and his guests! I would definitely stay here again.

  • This cute apartment was amazing and in the perfect location, we want to live here! Everything we needed was supplied even amazing green tea! The street the apartments located on is really nice and quite, only a block up to my fave street Melrose. We will most defiantly be back again!

  • The apartment was everything that I had hoped, in fact much bigger than I had expected.Residential area, but very conveniently located for metro and metrolink services. So much more relaxing than a hotel. Bill, host, was very hospitable and helpful, always responding to any queries. Would not hesitate to recommend a stay here.

  • Bill is the man! You couldn't ask for a better host/landlord. His property is beautiful, and perfectly located in the heart of West Hollywood - close to the action, but on a quiet and peaceful street.

He stocks some fantastic coffee, keeps the space immaculately clean, responds to requests within 24 hours, is an excellent communicator in general, and is an all-around charming fellow.

In fact the only reason I wouldn't recommend this place is because my wife and I want it all to ourselves.

Thanks again for a wonderful stay, Bill.

  • Our stay here was very pleasant. It was a great place to stay for the price. The place is clean and comfortable. Just as you see in the pictures. The bed was cosy. The patio was private and was good first thing in the morning for the sun, but around mid day the sun passes over. The area was lovely and quiet. We often took evening jogs in the area and sometimes stopped to have small chats with the friendly neighbours. Access to Melrose and the farmers market are so close !!

Bill was so helpful and attentive to anything we asked. I would definite stay again. In fact we are planning our next stay here already.

  • My parents visited me a 2nd time here in L.A. during May, 2013, staying at TD’s Hollywood-Melrose-Mid-Wilshire apt. This time was even better than the first. The hosts were cool, very plugged into email, the web. They’d newly equipped the place with some very robust Wi-Fi. And new air conditioning. Host offered to take my folks to airport - which was really appreciated. When it came to cleaning, the hosts again arranged for a very fast, skilled maid to leave the place immaculate, without inconveniencing us at all. They were just as capable when the washing machine broke halfway into our stay—they attacked the problem head-on within minutes of our mentioning it, and the appliance was operational within about a day. As before, my parents and I liked going to the nearby Grove shopping center and the Farmer’s Market, only about five-blocks' walk away. Also tried BLD, at Vista and Beverly (three blocks’ walk away). My parents also took in new sites within about five minutes’ drive such as the La Brea Tar Pits, the L.A. County Museum of Art, and the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Since this apartment lies in both a coastal and elevated area of L.A., conditions were very comfortable. The outdoor area especially, accommodating four or more people for dining. We did wish for a larger teapot--the one provided was single-user, since our hosts have promised a larger one for next time. And, as before, the apartment and our hosts managed to prove themselves totally fitting and convenient. We definitely plan on staying there again when we visit next year!

Writer, Hollywood. Att'd Goucher, BU. Veteran travel writer. Authored guidebooks on Los Angeles and other cities. Staff editor, travel trade magazines, going to travel agents. Now strictly freelance. My elevator speech: I market destinations--cities, counties, countries; their hotels, resorts, attractions. Have to say, in all my travels, there's no place like L.A. Especially now, with true mass transit. There's also no place like my second house, used by my guests. These include, lately: Eddie, a currency trader and budding actor from London, who utilized local acting/writing workshops; Jack, a medical informatics consultant from Plano, TX, with work at Cedars-Sinai Hospital; Tommy, a Texas Tech senior from Lubbock, TX, majoring in the fashion/retail trade, interning this summer at a Sunset Bl. clothier; and Matt, a musician from Brooklyn, who finished up a lengthy project at a Beachwood Canyon studio. The house is quite conducive to a fun-filled, productive stay. I look forward to welcoming you!
