About This Listing
Two small artist's ateliers at ground floor level transformed into a very comfortable and designed apartment. Located in the green courtyard of a secured residency, it's quiet and very romantic
1-7 August: reduced price against watering the garden
The apartment is ideal for a couple or two independent friends It offers every amenity you migth need during your stay, holidays or business trip.
First atelier - living room
The couch bed folds out easily into a comfortable double bed (French size; softer than the others, bought 9/2011) - for guests who do not want to climb up to a mezzanine.
Office space - see below/
Folding chairs and table, 1 1/2 cupboards are empty.
Mezzanine over the living room
This is my 'main bedroom" with a new double bed (Extra firm, 6/2012), not visible from beneath.
Second atelier - kitchen and bathroom
Kitchen with fridge, dishwasher, oven, espresso machine, microwave etc, spices and basic staples.
Bathroom: small tub and washing-drying machine.
Mezzanine over the kitchen
Single bed (firm mattress, 11/2012), some empty shelves - practical, if you are two friends who do not want to share the bedroom. I use this mezzanine to read comfortably under the window.
Internet - office space
Internet by cable or very fast wireless, television via the computer, printer, scanner, hifi-set with great sound. You may even play your music from your iPhone / iTunes directly on the hifi set without docking.
Free phone to France and other destinations (will check your kind of numbers to tell you before if free or payable at real fees).
Towels and sheets, information on Paris, books and music are provided.
is part of the residency's courtyard. If it's sunny, you may eat outside, take a sunbath, pick some herbs or fruits - whilst respecting the neighbors.
Please note: the apartment is fine for a couple, two friends or a single person, even for a long stay. For a short stay, you may be three, if you use the place mostly for sleeping and eating. It's too small, if three people stay mostly at home during a long stay.
You may use everything which is easily accessible - not locked in nor over 2m above ground.
The computer is accessible in visitor's mode only.
Interaction with Guests
You may always reach me by phone or mail, if you have a question or do not find a thing or a function. You get the keys from a friend or from the concierge.
The quarter is a calm, residential area, Many restaurants, shops, boutiques, cinemas at a few steps from the door. It's a safe quartier, where living is comfortable. You can go for late night strolls without fear.
You can reach every destination via the Metro and four bus lines. The station of Velib cycles is practically at the doorstep (for rent by the hour). Autolib (electric cars for hourly rent) in the next street.
Ask us for advice regarding arrival, parking, travels in France or your stay in general.
Other Things to Note
LATE ARRIVAL: If you arrive with a late flight at the airport, it may be more comfortable and not much more expensive to take a hotel at the airport for the night and book one night less in Paris. If you prefer to arrive directly at the apartment in the middle of the night, please indicate this before booking !!
You get a clean apartment and should leave it clean at departure, laundry done; If you have an early departure, you may leave one machine of sheets and towels to wash, following machines are at 20 Euros per machine.
If you use the phone to call out, check the list of free destinations. Exceeding charges are to be paid in Paris.
Access to the premises
Don't admit strangers to the apartment, only your friends / people you meet socially and my friends whose names you will get. Don't order a craftsman without my explicit permission even if the matter seems urgent to you.
Computer, Internet, Hi-fi:
1. Do not unplug the wall sockets. There are lots of empty sockets for your own appliances.
2. Do not try to make something work by plugging things otherwise or by pushing buttons at random, as this will not improve the result. Before using a computer, Internet or hifi set, please look at my short description. If you have a doubt, please call me immediately and I will gladly guide you by phone. (Between 8 in the morning and 1 in the night)
3.The computers have neither webcam nor microphone plugged in but if you explicitly ask for it before your stay.
(In case of aversion against waves, presence lights or else, the electricity for the computer installation may be switched off during your stay.)
Fire and smoke
The apartment is strictly non-smoker, you may smoke in the garden. Please use the electric candles inside and the real candles only in the garden. No incense or other live flame inside.
The residency is very quiet, people greet each other and everyone avoids to make too much noise. Don't speak on the phone in the garden, reduce the voice and music level after 10 pm. Consider that sound in the courtyard mounts and amplifies between the buildings. Generally, Parisians speak at lower voice and faster than elsewhere - if you speak at a normal American or German level, you seem to be crying to them.
Generally, the neighbors are in very good terms with each other and it is normal to stop for a chat, to help each other, to lend tools or a missing ingredient for dinner. This makes the residency very sure and living comfortable.
My two teenagers and I spent a wonderful week in Helga's flat in May. My kids loved her mezzanine beds/lofts. I loved it fit in our tight budget.
The flat's location was great and Helga is a great hostess. She was quite helpful. She was easy to access and provided us information about our flight terminals, the airport and the City.
While we arrived late at night, hungry and tired, we were happily surprised to find bread, cheese and cold cuts in the fridge. (Thanks so much Helga).
Location. The flat is located at the Alesia metro stop which was only a few steps away from our front door. The train to the CDG airport is only two Metro stops away at the Denfert Rochero train stop. Getting to and from the airport is quite convenient. (Note: review good map prior to arriving. The flat is in an alley off a main Avenue).
There is a grocery store, butcher and bakery just across the street. There are several outdoor cafes nearby and dare I say a McDonald's across the traffic circle where you can buy coffee to go.
As for the flat, it is a great alternative if you simply need a bed and easy access to Paris. This is not for hotel aficionados. However, the flat was ideal for my children and I. We were able to cook light meals and relax after hours of walking the streets of Paris. There was lots of sunlight and it is on the ground floor so no stairs to climb!
Things to consider: While we loved the flat and would be tickled to return, there are things that should be considered.
We are all under 5 feet 5 inches and we were able to shower comfortably, however the ceiling in the bathroom is low. A taller person may not be as comfortable.
The flat is narrow, about 9 feet wide, but very efficient and contains many amenities... microwave, dishwasher, clothes washer/dryer, wifi... (see the complete listing of amenities).
There are steps required to access the beds/lofts overhead. My son slipped and fell from four stairs above. There is a futon in the living room.
There are several cats outside so cat allergies may be something to note.
We did some light cooking and there was an odor in the kitchen after a few days into our stay. I'm not sure what it was, but we opened up the windows daily for circulation.
Finally, it is common to not use window screens in Paris, but as a result, my daughter was bitten by mosquitoes while she slept :(
All in all, we loved Helga's home and would gladly return.
Unfortunately we did not communicate enough and due to your changed arrival time we could not meet.
I'm sorry that your son fell off the stair. Nevertheless, there are grips and rails to hold on to as well as red and transparent non slip stripes on the steps. Stepping into the bed barefooted also helps.
Mosquito screens on the windows and doors would be technically impossible, but there are repellant candles for the garden and other anti mosquito products and lamps inside.
I did not perceive the odor you hunted nor did the next guest even after I asked him especially; but your pile of wet bath towels placed on wood or some food rests in the sink would be my suspects. I do hope that all my guests open windows or doors daily for circulation.
Cats roam freely in Paris. Being extremely allergic myself I don't let them enter, have mostly bamboo carpets and wash all tissues frequently. Water soluble paints, selected household cleaners and special beauty products brought my allergy level way down. Your "budget deal" even offered organic soap and shower gel from the pharmacy to avoid any skin irritation or sneezing ;-)
The atelier is tiny - for Californian standards. For Paris 14th and with the garden it's not bad. It's clearly no hotel room, no room service included.
Generally, to profit best of the place, guests should unpack things into the empty cupboards and drawers, store bags upstairs out of the way and live like you'd do on a sailing boat.
Helgas place was amazing and she was/is a very friendly host! The place was personal and you felt at home the minute you stepped in. It was also well kept and just as she explains it on the page. She is always available and happy to help with any problem or question you might have. The area is also great, and by metro it can take you anywhere you want to go in Paris. We have really enjoyed our stay at her place, and will happily come back.
Lots of hugs
Carmen, Zak and Rikki
I really enjoyed staying in Helga's studio. While the place is very small,
It is absolutely charming, cosy and it has everything that you need! Helga is very Personable and while I did not get to personally meet her, I feel like she was with us in everything that We needed, from making recommendations to making us feel welcome in her space. The location is great! The metro is a few steps away and it is a neighborhood where we felt safe and the neighbors are nice as well. No complaints whatsoever.
Merci Helga!

About the Host, Helga
