Location

Bergamo, Europe, Italy

When booking this apartment you will find yourself in the country, but you’re a just couple of steps (literally) from the old town, from all the restaurants and cafe.

Perhaps the nearest of these establishments, La Marianna, sits across the street from the palace grounds, beside a large gate providing street access to the upper city. A clock-tower bell still tolls 100 times at 10 p.m., signaling a long-gone curfew when residents who failed to heed the warning were locked outside the city walls.

The piazza’s contrasting architectural styles immediately captured the imagination of a British writer, Val Culley, who set her recent crime novel, “Death in the High City,” in Bergamo.

You find your eyes drawn to the 12th century Palazzo della Ragione, an imposing dark stone presence at the southern end and through an archway you catch a glimpse of the pink and white facade of the Colleoni Chapel in Piazza Duomo in vivid contrast

Frank Lloyd Wright once said that this two-story city, with its panoramic mountain views and fairy tale architecture, left him “stunned and astonished.”

The upper city, or Città Alta as it is called here, has all the trappings of la dolce v
