Architect design home close to downtown Hilo (1 mile) and to Honoli`i beach (1/2 mile). Ocean view, separate entrance, a sun deck and a living room area. House is new, clean, airy, comfortable and secure. Able to bike ride to most Hilo attractions.
Our house is conveniently located close to Downtown Hilo, but in a rural setting. There is one bedroom with a new queen size bed and a single futon that can be placed on the bedroom or on the living room. It is walking distance to Honoli`i beach, one of the most consistent surfing breaks on the island. We can see the ocean from the sundeck and living room. When the surf is up, we can also hear it from the house.
From our house, you also have a view of Mauna Kea summit. Wailuku is also the gateway to Hamakua Coast with lots of waterfalls, swimming holes and other places to visit.
Interaction with Guests
Me, my husband and our child live in the house upstairs. During the week we work, but on weekends we usually visit the farmers market, surf at Honoli`i and relax.
We are surrounded by old style plantation houses. Many kids play on the street, or walk by with their surf boards and boogie boards towards Honoli`i beach. Neighborhood is very friendly and safe. We have a remote control gate for privacy only.
The bus pass in front of the house 2 x a day to Kona and to town, but you can also walk or bike to downtown Hilo. We have a parking space inside our property for your rental car.
Other Things to Note
We have oranges, tangerines, pineapples, cashew and lots of bananas growing on the property. We also have a vegetable garden.
The apartment has a wet bar with a compact fridge, a coffee maker, toaster and a microwave.
Here in Hawaii, we always remove our shoes before entering the house. Because we have the highest electric rates in the nation, we ask our guests to turn off the lights and the fans when not in use. House rules are posted next to the front door. Treat the apartment like it is your own and enjoy yourself!
We had a warm welcome by Jim and later by Elisa and Ma'ili, who invited us for a walk around the neighborhood and gave us many good tips. The apartment is fantastic, with ocean views from the porch and living room. Jim shared some of the oranges which grow in the garden with us and let us use two boards and fins for surfing at close by Honoli beach. The place is close to downtown Hilo and a good location to explore the island, we went to Volcano Nationalpark, drove up Mauna Kea, went to some naturally heated pools in Puna.
A great, clean place and a very lovely family.
My wife and I were looking for a quiet pied a terre on the Hilo side and found the perfect cozy spot. The area is quiet, has a beautiful view of the bay from the sprawling patio and is close both to Hilo and the Akaka falls park.
Our 3-night stay ended up being very relaxing. Elisa was great at providing us with recommendations and would periodically check on us in order to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. This is a great listing that we highly recommend.
Jim and Elisa are gracious and helpful hosts. They were flexible with our changing plans.
The downstairs apartment we rented in the house Jim designed was so creative and beautiful. I will be sad to return to taking showers inside once again!
The charming comfortable apartment is designed so smartly. The open design made us feel at one with the outside. The Bay and ocean view is surrounded by a lush tropical landscape. And so convenient to Downtown Hilo. I will be sad to leave tomorrow.
We appreciated the local tips. I treasure many memories we take away from our time here.
We absolutely loved our stay in Hilo : Elisa and Jim were very welcoming, they always made sure we felt comfortable, had everything we needed and they shared tips on things to do and see on this part of the island. The apartment was modern, nicely decorated and well equipped.
We were close to all the restaurants and the island points of interest (rain forest, waterfalls, beach, volcanoes...).
We enjoyed celebrating our anniversary in this beautifully designed custom home. The locale is perfect and so close to town. Elisa, Jim and Ma'ili are lovely people and make you feel welcome with their special touches.
It is a true Hilo gem! Elisa was a wonderful host. In the morning there was delicious fresh OJ and on day of departure there were beautiful leis that smelled spectacular. The apt is charming and layout well thought out. There is lots of natural light with the big screen doors that lead out to the patio and view of beach. And the outdoor shower is with the old cast iron tube is funky, unique, comfortable but still private. Where else in the US can you comfortable shower surrounded by tropics?

I moved to Hawaii in 1990, graduated from the University of Hawaii with a degree in Marine Science. I am currently working as a High School Teacher and I love to be part of this great community. My husband was born and raise in Hilo. He studied architecture in California Polytechnic and has been designing houses for the last 34 years. Our place is an example of his authentic island design. We like to surf, snorkel, hike and swim at the many waterfalls near Hilo. We have an 8 years old daughter.
