About this listing
Architect design home close to downtown Hilo (1 mile) and to Honoli`i beach (1/2 mile). Ocean view, separate entrance, a sun deck and a living room area. House is new, clean, airy, comfortable and secure. Able to bike ride to most Hilo attractions.
Our house is conveniently located close to Downtown Hilo, but in a rural setting. There is one bedroom with a new queen size bed and a single futon that can be placed on the bedroom or on the living room. It is walking distance to Honoli`i beach, one of the most consistent surfing breaks on the island. We can see the ocean from the sundeck and living room. When the surf is up, we can also hear it from the house.
From our house, you also have a view of Mauna Kea summit. Wailuku is also the gateway to Hamakua Coast with lots of waterfalls, swimming holes and other places to visit.
Interaction with Guests
Me, my husband and our child live in the house upstairs. During the week we work, but on weekends we usually visit the farmers market, surf at Honoli`i and relax.
We are surrounded by old style plantation houses. Many kids play on the street, or walk by with their surf boards and boogie boards towards Honoli`i beach. Neighborhood is very friendly and safe. We have a remote control gate for privacy only.
The bus pass in front of the house 2 x a day to Kona and to town, but you can also walk or bike to downtown Hilo. We have a parking space inside our property for your rental car.
Other Things to Note
We have oranges, tangerines, pineapples, cashew and lots of bananas growing on the property. We also have a vegetable garden.
The apartment has a wet bar with a compact fridge, a coffee maker, toaster and a microwave.
Here in Hawaii, we always remove our shoes before entering the house. Because we have the highest electric rates in the nation, we ask our guests to turn off the lights and the fans when not in use. House rules are posted next to the front door. Treat the apartment like it is your own and enjoy yourself!
We had a great time staying in this lovely apartment! Good location, just outside of Hilo, the neighborhood was quiet (the coquis chirp at night, but for us, this only added to the charm) and safe, and the apartment was beautifully designed. We appreciated the fresh fruit and especially loved the outdoor (but private!) cascading shower. Elisa and her husband were away but made sure we had everything we needed ahead of time. Elisa let us know that we could contact Lindsay with any issues, but we didn't have any problems! Lindsay greeted us warmly and on time. Both she and Elisa were responsive to any correspondences. We would recommend the house to anyone staying in the Hilo area!
Although Elisa wasn't in town, we were met by someone upon our arrival; she and another family friend also stopped by during our visit to make sure everything was in working well for us. The location worked well for our visits to Hilo and the surrounding area; we didn't get to surf at the local spot, but it's less than a mile away (across a major road); and downtown Hilo is easy to access (0.5 miles?) on back roads.
Great neighborhood, great place, wonderful host. We enjoyed every moment at Elisa's place and already miss the outdoor shower. Thanks so much!
We really enjoyed our stay: a wonderful apartment with great specials as the outdoor shower which we enjoyed really much :-) Elisa was wunderful, very flexible about the check-in, welcomed us really warmly, shared great ideas about where to visit and generally cared about our wellbeing. Very recommendable!
Elisa and Jim were the most wonderful hosts! They really made our time in Hilo special and we will definitely hope to stay with them again! Jim made us special lei necklaces when we arrived and when we were sick, our hosts were so helpful and accommodating to make sure we were comfortable and felt better. They were a huge reason for why we had such an amazing time and we are so thankful for their hospitality!!
Elisa was flexible around our checkin, making it easy for us with good communication.
The house is beautiful. True to the pictures and in a great Hilo location. We arrived to fresh leis and lychees from the garden.
Elisa kept in contact each day and made sure we didn't need anything. She lent us jackets for our adventure up Manua Kea which we really appreciated as it is cold up there, the observatory nights are well worth the trip. Eliza was friendly and helpful - thanks very much! We really enjoyed our stay.
We had a warm welcome by Jim and later by Elisa and Ma'ili, who invited us for a walk around the neighborhood and gave us many good tips. The apartment is fantastic, with ocean views from the porch and living room. Jim shared some of the oranges which grow in the garden with us and let us use two boards and fins for surfing at close by Honoli beach. The place is close to downtown Hilo and a good location to explore the island, we went to Volcano Nationalpark, drove up Mauna Kea, went to some naturally heated pools in Puna.
A great, clean place and a very lovely family.

About the Host, Elisa
I moved to Hawaii in 1990, graduated from the University of Hawaii with a degree in Marine Science. I am currently working as a High School Teacher and I love to be part of this great community. My husband was born and raise in Hilo. He studied architecture in California Polytechnic and has been designing houses for the last 34 years. Our place is an example of his authentic island design. We like to surf, snorkel, hike and swim at the many waterfalls near Hilo. We have an 8 years old daughter.
