About this listing
Welcome to Dolphin Bay Cabanas.
Our small eco-conscious waterfront resort has just three gorgeous en-suite cabanas. With great views across the bay, you can watch the dolphins play while relaxing on your own private deck or on either of the two over the water relaxation ranchos.
Wonderful experience - secluded and a nature-lover's dream. Thank you also for the wonderful company!
Our stay at the Dolphin Bay Cabanas was the best of our trip. We were welcomed by Jelle and his family when we arrived and shown to our sweet little cabanas. The three days we spent with them were a pleasure. We spent many hours swimming, reading, hiking and of course taking that afternoon siesta. We found the grounds and cabana to be very well maintained and clean. Our favorite times were when we gathered around the table for our evening meal. Very intimate with great food and conversations with people from around the world. I highly recommend the Dolphin Bay Cabanas if you are looking for a place to completely relax and rejuvenate. We had a great time at Dolphin Bay Cabanas. The little cabanas were lovely, clean, and comfortable. The location is AMAZING! Remote, yes, but also a great way to see a more beautiful part of the archipelago without the party scene and boats going back and forth all the time. The bay was so peaceful, we had a great time going on tours from there or just relaxing in the hammocks. Also, there is bioluminescence in the bay which was AMAZING. We loved playing with the dogs too! The communal dinners were very nice and delicious- a great value.. Also be sure to get to the taco place across the bay- best tacos we’ve ever had for sure. Thanks to the Jelle, Diana, and Jannicke for the wonderful stay. We hope we can come again!
We had a nice time here. Jelle, his mother, and his wife, Diana, were very hospitable. There was some confusion about how to get there when we got in. We arrived on the same flight as another guest and even though I informed him of our arrival time, he picked her up and told us to take a water taxi. The location is really far from Bocas Town so it's hard to get back and forth all the time unless you want to pay the $40-$60 it costs for the water taxi. Jelle does offer to taxi people to and from Bocas but only if he is available and you still pay about $35. The property is really beautiful and the community breakfasts and dinners are wonderful and really filling.
Very relaxing stay. My girlfriend and I were here for 3 days and loved it. If you want to get away from it all for a few days or more this is the place. Great food, people, location and a 3 very friendly and fun dogs as well.
I hate to give bad reviews of hosts, but guests BEWARE!
The trip began nicely and the cabanas are lovely as well as the scenery in general -- very relaxing. But, what was not relaxing, was on the day of my 30th birthday (which happened to be Valentine's Day and the reason for my entire trip to the Dolphin Bay Cabanas) the host, Jelle Boute, decided to get very drunk -- first he upset his mother who then left, then he tried goading the German guests into a fight about processed food, and then begin a debate about US politics with me at the dinner table (of which he would not leave me alone about). It began with him talking about the healthcare system in the US and ended with him telling me that he hated the United States and for me to admit that my entire country was "shit" and that I was "stupid and spoiled" (all in front of the other guests); I obviously left after this.
His mother came to me the next morning and apologized for her son's behavior and said that she had attempted to get him mental health help previously, but he refused it. Jelle Boute hid in his house for the next 3 days of my stay, out of "embarrassment". The host is possibly bipolar, which is fine, but he refuses to get help, he is in a business where he must deal with people, and in general it is not ok to verbally abuse your guests on an isolated island which you can only get to by boat.
Jelle Boute ruined my birthday trip; the only saving grace was his wonderful mother and his wife, who are both very sweet people.
I would normally just suggest not interacting with the host, but you will be on an isolated island, and if you don't bring all your own food, you will have to eat the communal dinners (generally very wonderful dinners) with the host and other guests, making Jelle very difficult to avoid (he is also the only one who knows how to drive the boat).
I reported him to Airbnb, but I also wanted to warn other guests about my experience there. It was very unfortunate because everything else was simply wonderful (especially the 3 dogs who were so friendly and adorable).
