Casitas Tenorio is a unique B&B located on the slopes of Volcan Tenorio. We are located 2.5km from the centre of Bijagua, which makes us a perfect base for exploring the enchanting bright blue river 'Rio Celeste' in the Volcano Tenorio National Park. We have six private casitas (cottages/bunglaows) set amongst lush tropical gardens. There is lots of birds and animal life that live here, including sloths! We offer you a very personalized service, as we live here onsite.

The space

Casitas Tenorio is our home and business. We are Donald Varela Soto and Pip Kelly. We met working together on a conservation project in Bijagua in 2001. Since then, we’ve turned our commitment to sustainable living into a working farm and eco tourism venture. Donald is originally from Bijagua and Pip is from rural Victoria in Australia. We have travelled extensively together and have also lived and worked in a remote Indigenous community in Western Australia. We are married and have two bilingual daughters.

Bijagua is our home and we are committed to positively and sustainably developing our community. For us, this means preserving habitat for local wildlife and enabling sustainable tourism in the area. Casitas Tenorio is both a B&B and seven hectare working organic farm, producing dairy and other crops. We sell our milk to the cheese factory in town and also make our own cheese.

Guest access

Guests have access to walk around the property and many opportunities for birdwatching and sloth spotting! There is a peacful walking trail, and WIFI. Casitas Tenorio is a perfect location for all types of travellers including couples and families. We have a private trail onsite.

Interaction with guests

We offer a really personalised expereince. We live onsite and this allows us to share with our guests and have conversations together over breakfast or during the day. We also enjoy walking around the property with guests and invite our guests to participate in farming activities, such as milking the cows and feeding the chickens, with us. We like to talk to our guests, but we also are sure to respect your privacy and allow you time to relax.

Pip and Donald were excellent hosts, extremely friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wish we could have stayed much, much longer. Their casitas and property are gorgeous! Our casita (El Colibri) was clean, cozy, and really felt like our own Costa Rican home in the jungle. Donald served us a delicious organic breakfast each morning, and talked to us about the wildlife we saw from the breakfast area (toucans, tanagers, oropendulas, howler monkeys, and more). The beautiful Rio Celeste is also just a short drive away. If you are looking for an authentic rural Costa Rican experience with very friendly hosts, this is the place!

We arrived at Casitas Tenorio and was greeted warmly by our welcoming host Pip who gave us a nice orientation. We then met Donald who immediately spotted a howler monkey before Pip showed us to our beautiful and spotless cottage. We could have easily stayed another week just to enjoy the company of Pip and Donald who freely and enthusiastically shared their knowledge of Costa Rica. My husband was especially impressed with Donald's expert knowledge of Costa Rican birds and all the time he spent answering our questions and pointing out the spectacular species right there! A lot of love and attention to detail has gone into this property and there is a genuine goal to make each and every guest happy. From the fresh milk from the cows on their farm to the delicious breakfasts and local coffee made with French press coffee pots, there is nothing pretentious here - just a lovely family adding personal touches. The commitment to their community and to the environment is evident - they are passionate about what they are doing. We had a most memorable experience and feel like we made some wonderful new friends.

My 10-year-old son and I hugely enjoyed our 2-night stay at Casitas Tenorio. Pip and Donald were warm and welcoming. Donald's brother, Anthony, went the extra mile by giving us a tour of the farm, letting us milk the cows and coming to find us so we could enjoy a visit by the local howler monkey family. The cabins and gardens are carefully designed and quite lovely. The food was delicious and Pip graciously accommodated a dietary allergy in our family. Pip and Donald even thoughtfully provide six laminated pages of bird photos at every table in the outdoor dining room so visitors can identify which birds are breakfasting on bananas nearby. We came away with a great appreciation for Tico efforts to live sustainably and close to the land while sharing their country with those of us who are lucky enough to find ourselves in this beautiful corner of the world.

This place is magical. We hiked their property and milked a cow! Pip provide a really special experience for us and a lovely breakfast. You will probably never meet someone that cares more about local community. The room was awesome and a perfect location for visiting Rio Celeste. Awesome place!!!

When we booked our trip to Costa Rica, we wanted to get away from the day-to-day grind and truly relax. And we got an amazing experience out in the middle of the rainforest at Casitas Tenorio, tucked away in the rural part of the country where we got to really understand Pure Vida. Pip and Donald were awesome hosts and went out of their way to make us feel at home. The breakfast every morning was amazing - fresh fruits, eggs, cheese...all freshly made and picked from their farm. The casita that we stayed at was cute and simple, which was what we were looking for, surrounded by beautiful nature. If we are in the area again, we will definitely be back!

There are simply not enough good things to say about Casitas Tenorio. First: it was easy to find even in the dark because they did such a good job with signage on the roads. Secondly: we were greeted so graciously by our host Antony when we arrived, and then by Eli with breakfast in the morning. The breakfast was beyond spectacular and we loved visiting with Eli. She was so helpful with information about the wildlife in the area. We spent the afternoon at Rio Celeste (which was very blue by the way, even in the rainy season), then when we returned Eli and Anthony helped us make reservations at our next location and then sent us on our way with a piece of fruit. Our casita was very clean, comfortable and well equipped. The shower was definitely a highlight - it felt like an outside shower, it was beautiful. If you're looking for wifi, you'll find it at the reception. Otherwise the casitas have no wifi or tv (seriously, get unplugged). There are howler monkeys and sloths on the property as well as all the fun farm animals. But as cute and comfortable the place is, the best part of Casitas Tenorio is the people there. We felt like family!
